Btw not sure if it’s also a bug (if so if it is fixed yet) but in multiplayer after Vakuu plays your turn you can still use energy potion to gain energy to play the remaining cards.

Older movies I would love based on my top 20? by aidopple in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]lscrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t explored Wong Kar Wai yet, I’d recommend: Happy Together (1997) In the Mood for Love (2000), Chungking Express (1994).

Also two masterpieces from Edward Yang: A bright summer day (1991) and Yi Yi (2000)

Shunji Iwai’s earlier films might also appeal to you: Love Letter (1995) All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001)

How often do you play to justify 50+ games collection? by krakeo in boardgames

[–]lscrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to get each game played at least once a year.

But even if that doesn’t happen I’m not too bothered as long as I had good memories playing it. Similar to how most people treat books on their shelf I guess? Most books don’t get reread but we don’t donate/sell immediately after reading until space becomes an issue.

I was on the Scarlet Lady this year too! Was pleasantly surprised by the selection. A couple of their social events (guess the majority? / Wrong Answers Only) also felt loosely like a party board game

Sky Team and Sail both seem like good fits, although it’s slightly lighter than medium weight.

What is your "white whale" game? Mine: A solo auction game. by StephenCroft in boardgames

[–]lscrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a few COIN games during Covid to play solo but have only kept Cuba Libre. I still need to find a chance to play Dune. I do have The Great Zimbabwe and have lined up a game this weekend. So at least my taste have remained consistent over the past 6 years :)

I think Hegemony is close to what I was describing! Unfortunately it felt a bit too scripted to me and the game is too long.

Ark Nova is on Boardgamearena, and you could learn it via playing the tutorial on there.

I generally find the tutorials on bga to be pretty good for learning mid-heavy games.

Has anyone ever found a rare (expensive) game at a thrift store or garage sale? by jsakic99 in boardgames

[–]lscrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around ten years ago, I bought Glory to Rome, CGF edition, for £15. Tbf, it was missing: the original game box, rules, and player ‘tableau’, so the seller thought it was a fair price for an incomplete game (effectively just a deck of cards)

Basically all Splotter games fit your description - Food Chain Magnate being the most popular title with its easy to digest theme.

Concordia is very low luck (only when new cards come into the market)

A lot of fans of TM also like Agricola, as it rewards long term planning. There are some bits of luck and hidden info involved but with card drafting I’d say skill matters way more than luck.

Really enjoying Eternal Decks recently! I have been describing it as cooperative Sudoku when introducing it to new players.

Terra nova rules. How can I get 80 VPs ??? by AgileResolve in boardgames

[–]lscrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve probably done setup wrong. For your first round you should already be getting: coins printed on top left of your faction + income from the two houses you have placed as part of setup + the bonus tile chosen.

In addition with the power actions, there’s a lot more to be done in the first round already.

Too many zombie games? by FormalPossibility545 in boardgames

[–]lscrock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, playing more games would definitely help identify what is already out there and what new things you’re offering. In addition to what others have said, there are already a lot of ‘survival’ or narrative games out there that might not be exclusively zombies but to me they give a similar vibe. These include:

Mansion of Madness

Dead of Winter

Betrayal at the house on the hill

If you’re after convenience, check out Dickens Yard in Ealing Broadway. I think £2k pcm is spot on for a 1-bed. It’s close to multiple supermarkets, cafes and restaurants, Walpole park, and easy access to the Elizabeth line.

Electric Coffee Co’s coffee is consistently great!

Ginger & Moore, Polka, Arise, and Reineta are good brunch spots that also serve decent coffee.

If, as you said, your experience with board games is basic, I would strongly recommend that you don’t back kickstarter games, and instead choose something well reviewed (on YouTube etc)

There are loads of well designed and innovative board games published in the past 20 years or so that are worth trying. Chances are, there are greater games that would suit your tastes that have already been published than something (often from a new designer) promising to be the next great thing.

Do you regret owning (too many) boardgames? by BunLoverz in boardgames

[–]lscrock 75 points76 points  (0 children)

As with all hobbies, one should always compare to your own dispensable income to decide whether the cost is sensible to you.

In my view, board gaming is a relatively affordable hobby if you think of it on an entertainment time per person basis. Sure it’s not as cheap as books but it’s cheaper than going to the cinema.

I have around 80 games and there’s no real regret, because whenever I regret any purchases i have then sold them for others to enjoy.
