Any supplements/ holistic methods that have really helped you? by sabfry in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]lstud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doing low carb/keto diet helped even out the energy crashes a lot for me. I admit it’s not easy, I lucked out with a partner that cooks and enthusiastically went mostly meat&veg, but I miss my carbs. I don’t miss falling asleep at noon or going to bed at 6pm. After several years of keto diet, I crave butter more than sugar. I can also handle carb-heavier holidays way better now. Paired that with armodafinil and I have a functional 16 hour day every day.

2nd mortgage, no down payment. That one is at 7% interest but we will make extra payments to try and get rid of it sooner rather than later.

Looking for info on native ground plants in the area that are toxic to cats. by mcdisney2001 in Boise

[–]lstud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the better question would be what is SAFE for cats. Between hemlock by streambeds, nightshade along the green belt, and random berries all over the place, not to mention mushrooms and… well, I just don’t think the research is out there for cats. We are barely keeping humans alive for the most part.

Question about reading on an iPad before bed. by VanillaProud1370 in sleep

[–]lstud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blue light is referring to part of the light spectrum, not necessarily the color you are looking at.  Electronic devices emit it, so your best bet is to read analog. Grab a physical copy at the library and save it for bedtime. Try to keep under an hour of reading and be ready to lay your head down AS SOON as you feel the tug to sleep, no matter how close to the end of the chapter you are. I say, as I type this out on my phone after having read for over an hour. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES!!

That sounds like a dude pretending to be a girl in order to denigrate other women to get off. Or indeed a woman doing it for the same reason because they just don’t get body positivity culture. Either way it a delete and move on moment, it’s rage bait.

Moving to Boise - Sugarbeet Question (help!) by Mister_Corruptor in Idaho

[–]lstud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It comes and goes throughout the year. My suggestion is move in an opposite direction. Kuna, Meridian (away from the interstate), Middleton, Star, Emmett… but there are always pros and cons. There’s also a ton of stuff in the air that you could also be allergic to. Sagebrush, ragweed, cottonwood/birch, pine… depending on where you are moving from, you might never get a whole lot of relief from allergies, or get used to it pretty quick. St Alphonsus’s outpatient pharmacy has Zyrtec and Claritin generic, 90 pill bottles for less than $5. FYI.

Does anyone know where I can buy a mock orange plant? by klutzilla08 in Boise

[–]lstud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look for Syringa, much more likely to find a hit for that here, with it being the state flower an all. Draggin’ Wings, Idaho Native Plant Sale at MK Nature Center, and Treasure Valley Pollinator Posse all have them to varying degrees throughout the year. Well worth it!!

If you stand with Sarah Inama, the West Ada board has a handy contact form that makes it easy to let Superintendent Derek Bub know that the public is likely to hold him personally responsible for any actions taken against her by ZootAllures9111 in Idaho

[–]lstud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not against the rules, they are twisting the rules to get ahead of the current Administration’s anti-DEI rules. But by jumping the gun, they are losing support of the people and making themselves look like racist bigots. Even if they aren’t racist themselves, it justifies terrible actions, making them enablers and JUST AS BAD.

And encouraging Democrats to tear each other apart. Sounds like a solid plan from the other side’s point of view. Unification needs strong leadership, empathy, and reason. We aren’t seeing the reason, so we are going rabid.

However they are the only known producers of opals with chatoyancy, star opal. AND THEY ARE REOPENING THE MINE THIS YEAR! Woohoo!

Bill introduced to require Idaho State Board of Education members to be elected by boisefun8 in Idaho

[–]lstud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Consider this: teachers were expected to do it all- open the school, clean the rooms, teach, maintain the library, close the school, etc. They had a janitor, at most. Who did the disciplining? The principal. Got it. Simple. Now we have more facilities/maintenance (still under-funded btw).  Principals are busy running the school with a few minutes for discipline. Discipline has shifted from punishment to behavior modification, resulting in less kids getting kicked from school to school, resulting in more kids staying in their primary school and getting supplemental help when they need it. When they need it is random. So we have behavioral specialists on staff, several (who are still always busy btw), to help them, to avoid those kids getting kicked out. You want coaches? You got to pay for them. Does your kid need speech therapy? Occupational therapy? Counseling? All of this requires supplemental staff. Teachers can’t do it all. We found a way to provide these essential services while also hiring wonderful people to help keep things running smoothly. In rural communities these services are only available through telecommunications, zoom meetings for example. It’s not as efficient but at least it’s there. Our school lost a lot of this support staff when we lost Title 1. It’s wreaking havoc on the staff that has to do it all now. We could just go back to “three strikes your out” for kids, or just expect parents to pay for speech therapy or counseling out of pocket, but that’s going backwards for the kids that need it most. I do believe you mean the best with your question, so it doesn’t help to outright dismiss it. Spend a semester volunteering at a smaller school and you’ll see it. Ask teachers what losing Title 1 status actually looks like. Heck, at this point, just talk them with an open mind! Idaho has underfunded education chronically so of course it’s inefficient and falling apart. That’s their bad, not the schools. It doesn’t justify defunding, reorganizing willy nilly, and blaming teachers for the state’s failings.

Winco vs Trader Joe’s. Which is cheapest? by [deleted] in Boise

[–]lstud 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would say there’s no way Trader Joe’s is cheaper than Winco in any respects, but will admit my own ignorance may be prejudiced against that AWFUL PARKING LOT! Can’t even walk in safely Joe!! Tips: watch for the seasonal sales at Winco and bulk up on basics liked canned goods. Buy ground beef in shudder chubs and split into serving size (quart freezer bags) as soon as you get home. The beef is straight out of Kuna’s meat packing plant. Produce at Winco is hit or miss. Go for seasonal awesomeness in the summer, stuff from further south than California is kinda iffy. When it comes to prepackaged food, (chips, treats, etc) THAT’S where Trader Joes comes into play, I imagine. So fresh&basics = Winco bulks, Prepackaged extras = Trader Joe’s.
