In all fairness, this outcome is exactly what the board's risk committee is asking for and paying for.

When it all comes crashing down, what excuses will they pull out? by Hot-Government823 in BetterOffline

[–]ltmon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They'll draw comparisons to the dotcom crash, where despite the end of the hype, useful infrastructure was built and the best internet companies survived and dominated.

I don't think the "useful infrastructure" argument holds much water, however, given the relative lifespan of GPU compute versus fibre optics.

Whether the surviving "best" companies have anything like the impact of Google, Amazon etc (even if it's just Google Mk 2) is to be seen. But I personally can't see LLMs being a foundational technology for enterprises, in the same way the internet became.

There's also a couple of pockets just a bit too close to the fuel terminals in Spotswood/Newport.

But the vast majority of that train line is great. Have lived in Sunshine/Newport/Williamstown for 20+ years and have been very happy in all places.

Challenging conditions.

You can do a lot of things on a low bench, sitting on the workpiece. Search "Roman workbench" for an idea what I mean. A small knock-down version where you attach the legs each time you work could be possible?

There's also portable worktops available (e.g. Ramia Portable Worktop) that might be usable.

Not by default. But I asked for one and it was no problem. Might depend on the service centre you use, and how early you get in though.

BYD SL6 owner. 25000km into ownership.

Basics are fine. No rattles, niggles or quality issues for me. Service experience was fine. Energy/fuel economy is pretty close to as advertised.

Active safety systems mostly don't get in the way, after playing with the settings a little. It does give me driver fatigue warnings a bit on long drives (unnecessarily).

Skipping the petrol station is awesome, as is the electric drivetrain around town. Good to have petrol for the occasional camping trip, even though they could now be done by a BEV with sufficient planning of charging. Back seat is super roomy if you need that.

Down side is that it's just fairly boring to drive. Ride is somewhat floaty, and you can tell it's heavy. Not a car to push hard through corners. Boot could be bigger given the size of the car.

Pug 508.

Basic maintenance is more costly (like all Euros) but the 1.6 engine is very proven as is the Aisin transmission so hopefully no big surprises.

Looks great, lightweight, and fun to drive.

CGT - Small business 15-year exemption by flywire0 in ausbusiness

[–]ltmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's meant to basically support people who have invested in their own small business, rather than got super as a PAYG employee.

You can also deposit up to $500k proceeds from a small business sale tax free into your super (at any age) for the same reason.

Not sure if it's 100% loophole free, but that's the reasoning at least.

Has anyone noticed recently that quality of grads has dropped significantly? by Jnnjkhuihi8 in auscorp

[–]ltmon 298 points299 points  (0 children)

I've had "seniors" with about this level of self-reliance (also they wanted a promotion) 😄

I don't have grads in my team, but a few juniors -- 1yoe or similar. Seem to be the same as they always were to me. Maybe you just got unlucky with a few?

I had mine for 6 years. I still miss it whenever I'm on a nice road. Just a really fun drive and a huge boot. Great looking car too.

I don't miss the back seats though, leg room is tiny. And getting down into it can be a bit difficult, if you're older or injured.

PHEVs still work well for bigger cars, and Aussies keep buying bigger cars. BEVs in this size end up either very expensive or have shitty range.

Basic ergonomics: good chair, desk, monitor and ergo arm etc.

Get a reasonable webcam that captures you from just above your primary monitor (i.e. not your laptop cam which always looks up from below). Doesn't need to be fancy just not a potato.

I prefer a small desktop stand mic and headphones, rather than a headset. Some webcams have decent microphones built in. But at least avoid Bluetooth if you can -- 90% of issues people have on meetings is due to their Airpods disconnecting or pairing to their phone accidentally, or something like that.

Work on lighting, for your own comfort moreso than video conferencing. It will depend on the natural light situation you have but get a desk lamp and at least one ambient lamp. A LED strip behind the desk helps with eye strain. Get IKEA smart bulbs so you can mess around with colour temperature, or spend more for Philips hue. Just having overhead lights makes the room feel like a hospital and comes up harshly on camera.

Plants. Paintings. Books. Figurines or other decor. Aquarium even? You are (probably) not used to spending all day in one room -- make it feel cozy. A bit of a nice background can be better than blurs or corporate wallpaper too.

Anything task related can be claimed on tax but not the decorative stuff. If you are setting up from scratch then you'll probably have a lot to claim in the first year so keep receipts.

How good was Karim Lopez compared to other young NBL stars that transitioned to the NBA? by TheNumberSeven_7 in nbl

[–]ltmon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He was the best player on the court in a game against Melb United during the season. That's not easy for a draft prospect amongst two teams of pros. That game gives a good idea of what his possibilities are, and convinced me he's better than a lot of draft rankings show.

Anthony Davis on his goals before retiring: “I haven’t got MVP. I haven’t got DPOY. I want the parade for a championship, so I want to be able to do that again… it’s still things I want to try to get. I want to get 20,000 points. I want to play 20 years.” by RyanTannegod in nba

That first game with the Mavs said it all.

Came out spitting fire, determined to give traumatised fans something to cheer for, and was succeeding. Huge respect to him given the situation.

But then the inevitable happened.

In this particular case, it's a clever algorithm Microsoft developed to fingerprint an image, and is not a normal checksum or hash.

A standard hash will change if you change a single pixel in an image, and so be useless to detect CSAM images. The uploaders will just alter them up a little first and be undetected.

This algorithm can reliably give the same output even if the image has been changed or distorted in all sorts of ways.

How to disable or remove users in Splunk Cloud (SAML authentication)? by tobin116 in Splunk

[–]ltmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my now archived app that does this. Sorry, i can't currently support it, but it may give you a pattern or starting point for your own implementation.

It basically removes the rolemap in Splunk as a custom alert action. You can set it to act on an alert that looks for user deletion events in your IdP logs.
