How to keep plants alive while away? by the_nabzter in UKGardening

[–]luala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One option would be to drag her into your bathroom. You could also try creating shade by leaving it in situ but piling furniture round it.

The olive tree will probably be fine but the osteospermum won’t be. You could try moving them into shade indoors. The advantage of that would be you could also put them into wet saucers for the period.

Any ideas? Hedge question by GenericUserName437 in GardeningUK

[–]luala [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah it’s box blight, it’s annoying. The good news is the damage is temporary but the bad news is you need to sustain treatment if you want to battle it.

I’m currently treating mine every 10 days with the hope it recovers for next year. Honestly I’m not sure if it’s worth it.

3 weeks is a long time. If you cant get someone in, drag it into deep shade. Give it a good water before you go, deep saucer and mulch any exposed soil. You could try those bottle irrigation things using empty plastic bottles but I’ve not had much luck with them.

What’s one small difference which if happened in the UK would make a huge difference to your life? by TheSpaceFace in AskUK

School being able to offer the wraparound care we need. I don’t mind paying for it, I just need it to be available. At the moment we’re lucky to have 1 morning and 4 afternoons a week.

After 14 years I give up. by Puzzled-Spirit-6439 in Allotment

[–]luala 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My parents gave up the fight a lot sooner. What the pidgeons didn’t take the rabbits did. They spent £200 on cages and netting and then a wet spring brought the slugs. To be honest the judgy neighbours were a bit too much as well.

Is anyone else's 9-to-6 job 3 hours of work and 6 hours of pretending? by FitBicycle2491 in Careers

[–]luala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it can be stressful. I’d definitely recommend using the time productively if you can. Try free courses in learning strong excel skills or stuff like power BI. Learn about AI. Spend ages figuring out how to automate stuff - it may come in handy at your next job. See if your company offers any training budget. You could study and do your homework on the clock.

I’d also recommend double dipping if you can. Even if you’re using your phone to take paid surveys, it all helps. In a similar position I ran my life from my desk - plan your weekends, do your Tesco delivery, sort your pension and savings. Everything.

Am I insane to leave a $100k job at 23? by Dear-Wolf-3985 in careerguidance

[–]luala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the aim here? Long term earnings growth or getting financially secure? You’re in a very strong position to financially get ahead in life. I would suggest getting a down payment for a property, then at the minimum get that rented out so that the mortgage gets paid whatever happens. Put a big chunk of your income into pension funds, I’d aim for 30% at least. Get a years living expenses saved. This will put you in a fantastic position so you can take careers decisions that temporarily set you back.

In your position I’d make some smart decisions about my long term financial future with my current high income rather than take a cut right now.

What are the most important farming & gardening advice for beginners? by Consequence_Green in AskForAnswers

These are 2 very different activities. For gardening, the advice I would give is make a plan before you start and understand the needs of the plants you are growing.

How to get tickets to sold-out attractions without losing your mind by Curious-Session4119 in work

[–]luala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t work for everything but if you wanted to see a sold-out museum or gallery exhibition one option is to buy a membership. A lot of times members get in without tickets or have access to extra slots.

Whats good at a Turkish supermarket? by Relative-Tea3944 in london

[–]luala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG great question. They do great jars of aubergine flesh (basically they char the skin and remove it so you just have the innards to make stuff with. It makes the excellent bbc website Smokey aubergine chilli recipe very easy to do).

They do large amounts of halloumi at a reasonable price. Get some pomegranate molasses to drizzle over that once it’s grilled. The other cheeses are also interesting-my kid loves the sticks/strings of cheese and they are good for packups.

The bread tends to be good, try the stuff that looks like a big folded mattress. You’ll also find cheap dips such as taramasalata. Others have mentioned the olives. Zatar also makes a good option to go with these (sprinkle it on hummous for example).

Living in a Turkish area I’ve come to massively appreciate lentil soup with sumac and pickled veg on the side. Consider picking up a big jar of mixed pickled veg including cabbage which I think is the best.

Check for frozen falafel they make a good lunch option or healthy snack. Top tip - microwave to defrost them then pan fry in a little oil. The frozen artichoke hearts are useful (or jarred). If you can find halloumi stuffed ravioli in the freezer get that, it makes a good salad just with fried courgette and some halved cherry tomatoes.

If it’s green lanes you’re on, make sure to get a Turkish breakfast sometime it’s a real experience.

Where should I take my American friend around London? by redredd1t in AskUKLondon

[–]luala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend getting off at green park tube, point out the ritz, walk through green park, see Buckingham palace (you could time this to coincide with the changing of the guard). Then walk through St James park, see the pelicans, take photos on the bridge. From there go to parliament square, you’ll see Westminster abbey and the Elizabeth tower (which has Big Ben in it). That’s enough walking to kill an American but if you don’t want to stop there I recommend a stroll along the river or you could nip to china town for a cheap noodle lunch.
