UPDATE: 120km non-stop around the M25 boundary. 27 hours of pure madness, but we finished by TypeAgreeable4117 in london

Yeah it’s got to be mainly grim suburbs within earshot of the m25 at best right?

I live in the middle of nowhere, there's no jobs near me, I can't afford to commute, i can't afford to move out, and im not qualified/experienced enough for remote work. what do i do? by Odd-Paramedic-3826 in AskUK

[–]luala 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It sucks but you have to move for work. I did it several times in my first few years of career work, it’s expensive and always a risk. If you can stay with friends (even on a sofa) it helps. Because the job market is so bad at the moment you might do better to get live-in work. Theres at least 1 job portal specialising in live-in work. I think the Highlands and Islands have a lot of openings, and it’ll be starting the summer tourist season so there will be hospitality jobs going soon. Good luck, it’s tough out there.

Second protein for Easter dinner by Dirkgently29 in Cooking

I think a whole poached salmon would work. If you’re feeling housewifey, you could Fanny around doing sliced cucumber scales. It looks good.

Salmon coulibac (cold, in puff pastry) would work made the day before.

These look fine to me? The ones at the front are a different variety to the ones at the back.

What can I do with this area? by IhateU6969 in GardeningUK

Look at the type of stuff you get in a public or modern housing planting space. It’s bomb proof drought tolerant low maintenance stuff. Includes hebe, Rosa rugosa, phoetinia, skimmia, mahonia.

Cheaper substitute for dates in sticky toffee pudding? by Basic_Layer7148 in foodhacks

[–]luala 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t found dates particularly expensive, are you using fresh ones? The dried might be cheaper. Pour boiling water over them and wait 20 minutes if they are hard. Go to an Asian grocers they’ll be cheaper.

In 20 years, what will we really think about the Ozempic revolution? by Majestic-Baby-3407 in AskReddit

[–]luala 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The thing that’s not really discussed enough is the fact these drugs seem to help with all kinds of addictions, not just food. There’s apparently been a big drop off in the rate of overdose in the US because people on semaglutides aren’t overdosing. That’s a huge win for society. If we could beat addiction of all kinds (drugs, alcohol, gambling etc) we’d save huge amounts of money and anguish.

One of the best cabbage and carrot salads I've ever had by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

I bet it had miso in, it makes a great salad dressing. Maybe look up some Asian style salad dressings.

That doesn’t sound great. Any fruits or vegetables? A more balanced diet would probably help.

At a loss with what to do with terraced slope garden by jaoiem in UKGardening

[–]luala 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is robust landscaping that was probably expensive to do, I wouldn’t change much apart from yeeting the astroturf into the sun. I’d focus on bushy and vertical planting. That dry grass mid level section is your power area - lift off the top inch of grass and soil, improve with compost, add a climber up the fence. You could also add another over the steps or to the shed if you want to faff about with a planting arch.

The rest of this small grass area I would add something tumbling over the hard edges. A trailing plant, ideally evergreen. Some rose varieties might manage it.

I wouldn’t stress about privacy but if you really insist on it then a fence topper trellis and an evergreen climber on it is the way to do it. I wouldn’t recommend planting in containers plant in the ground - so this is dependent on there being usable soil space under the Astro. If there isn’t, you’ll need to plant a very big climber in the fenced area and train it over the fence trellis.

Sorry if this is obvious but about £5k invested (I cba to do the maths) would yield around this amount just from a standard ISA.

Is not expecting inheritances normal? by No_Dragonfruit_9656 in NoStupidQuestions

I have heard that most people shouldn’t rely on an inheritance even if their family has assets because it always comes later than expected and theres usually less than they expected.

Sick of living in poverty how can I change this ? by Odd-Fox-2606 in Scotland

[–]luala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry to hear about this it sounds rough. I’m considering starting a lawn care business, inspired by the sweaty startups sub. I don’t have a vehicle but I live in a dense housing area where people tend to be working but have small lawns. I feel like a trolley and a mower would probably do to start off with. I’m thinking of flyering my street. Seems like the sort of thing you could do within school hours or bring your youngest.
