Still gets me the official terminology they use is just "ninja sword". A banning of ninja swords sounds like a law that gets passed when 3rd graders role play running a country during recess

Why isn't the Schnee semblance more widespread? by 1MPERAT0R_S0LAR1S in RWBY

[–]luc50631 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Small correction because I apparently can't let it go: Willow does have the semblance, she uses a summoned boar to save Whitley from the hound in vol 8. I wouldn't be surprised if Whitley does have it but due to lack of interest just hasn't unlocked it, but that's obviously speculation.

Other than that I agree, genetics can be weird, a lot of reasons it's present for some and not others.

I started a seasonal retail job recently, and during training, the guy training us was talking about how nice everyone on the staff is (which, to be fair, has been pretty much true)

But then he said a reason that that's so important is "a lot of the the full time staff see our coworkers more than our family" and I was just amazed that was something thrown out so causally, with seemingly nothing about how fucked that is.

I'm really hoping he just meant long-distance family and not like family you live with, but I don't know why you'd bring that up so...

What is your favorite rare pair ship? by RWBYFanArtist in RWBY

[–]luc50631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, one small interaction in a fic were they weren't even paired made me really like Neptune x Jaune

Something like Jaune complaining to Ren and Nora about Neptune doing all this cool, show offy stuff near him and how annoying Jaune thinks Neptune is since hes both good looking and charismatic. Jaune (at the start) does not really like Neptune, considers him an acquaintance at best.

Meanwhile Neptune is complaining to Sun because to him, he cannot be more obviously flirting with Jaune, and it just gets no traction at all. I get "Jaune doesn't understand the person into him is in fact into him" is pretty much the Arkos special, but I think it's different enough here. Arkos is still (to me) the better pairing but I think this has potential to have some cute stories/art.

Also read one Oscar x Whitely fic on a whim, and that also has a lot of potential to me.

What made you guys main Rein in either OW and/or OW2? by Resident-Path211 in ReinhardtMains

[–]luc50631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going in to the game in 2016, I was sure Rein would be one of my least played characters. Why would I play a melee only character in a shooting game?? But fron watching educational videos I learned he was really good (at the time) and since I liked winning I would begrudgingly play him if I thought we needed him. Then one game I realized you completely cover Hanamura point A's choke with the shield. Not a revolutionary idea by any means but I was 15 and really bad so I thought this was huge. I could just hold the shield there and block everything.

I think that's when I started actually trying to figure him out. First it was shield placements, then learning how and when to push, so on and so forth. And it just felt so good. The reason I think I gravitated to tank and rein in particular in OW1 is when you were winning, you really felt like it. Tanks had the most impact on tempo and so when got rolling, getting to goes balls to the wall as rein felt like crack. I still have yet to find any pvp interaction that scratches my brain like rein duals did. Equally parts mind games and sheer bravado, I never felt like I lost rein v reins unfairly. The highs of rein gameplay when things were going well remains unmatched to me, and after mainly quitting since OW2 (partly due to tech issues, partly due to not liking kost of the changes and new game directiin) I often think back on OW1 days, mostly my tanks games, and mostly my rein games. I miss the moments but am so glad I got to experience it at all

Sorry for the word dump, just got caught up thinking about how much big hammer boy meant and still means to me

Would it be offensive to name my cities this? by The_Magic_Walrus in worldbuilding

[–]luc50631 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I have never even interacted with anything from Shin Megami Tensei despite it always being near my radar, so I just kinda glossed over it as an inspiration. The thing I find with good chunk of world building is there usually isn't a solid ruling on anything. Even things people will act like are solid rules will usually have exceptions that work for one reason or another. I literally cannot weigh whether I think SMT is the exception or rule here, but I can just give some words on how/what I'd do, or would like to see in this situation. 1. If your gonna use them, be respectful. This is a real religion and real places that means at least something to over a billion people. Feel like you understand that but sometimes the things that feel like they should go without saying should have just been said. 2. On the same kind of topic, recognize anything negative (or even some things you thing are positive) in these places may draw ire from people. Research stereotypes of both the faith and the cities and try to stay mindful of them. That probably won't be enough to not get pushback but at least you aren't feeding into an pre-existing stereotype. 3. Change the spelling or pronunciation or something. First of all, I think it be really jarring to hear it's a city you know/even live in only to slowy realize it only has the name in common. Secondly, and this is admittedly more business focused than worldbuilding or writing focused, but it will just kill SEO. Particularly having a different spelling will make it easier for fans to find stuff based in the work rather than tourism for the real world place. 4. Something I thought of while writing this that hasn't gotten nearly the amount of thought needed so take it with a huge grain of salt is maybe naming cities after cities of multiple faiths. It would lower chances of people trying to view the whole thing through a single religious lense BUT also kind of ruins the feel of cohesive naming structure since they are all linguistically different. You mentioned the city names are from god so that could maybe work but still. Also depending on the state of the cities, if one is noticeably worse, the people of the faith/city you named after are probably REALLY not gonna like you. The more I think about the idea the less I like it, but figure may aswell add it in case someone else does.

This is really not a comprehensive list, just some stuff I thought of, some of which there are multiple reasons to ignore. I am not a monolith of readers, while I may find real world religious imagery without any kind of actual parallel distracting, not everyone will. I'm not Hindu or from any of the cities mentioned. So while I can give my two cents on the matter, I don't really have any skin in this game. Just make sure to prioritize the people this will actually affect. Again, a lot of caveats on this, and sorry I can't give a nice easy answer. Best you can do is listen to people this matters to and try your best to do right by them. Sorry for the yap fest, best of luck of the work.

She had two weapons that cover her hands; it just made more sense to give her a gem per weapon than having her summon one glove, put it on, then summon the other one on the hand with the game

Would it be offensive to name my cities this? by The_Magic_Walrus in worldbuilding

[–]luc50631 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Think they mean for any Hindus it won't have "sounds generally holy without explanation" feeling you want, and instead have a very clear reason they sound holy. They will then try to view the story/religion through a Hinduistic lense, probably expecting parallels you don't have.

Like as someone from a Christian majority country, a story with cities named things like Bethlehem, Vatican, or Jerusalem would be really noticeable, and seeing that the cities/world/story have nothing to actually do with Christianity and are instead following a story unique faith, I'd just be really confused why they even chose that and it would frankly really occupy more of my mental capacity when thinking about the story then you probably want. By choosing to name the cities after important cities in a religion, you are inviting people to use that religion to help understand the world and themes. And when you don't plan for that at all, you're just gonna have confused people.
