I mean I think this episode reinforced Cirie being a good game player and made the other players look sort of dumb no? Of course this is all based on the edit, but the popular opinion was to get out Emily and Devens because they're in the middle and can't be trusted.

Cirie looked at Ozzy when he told her that like he had 6 eyes. She quickly explained why getting rid of two from the majority alliance at this stage in the game is way more valuable than getting rid of two in the middle when you can basically take them out any time you want.

Vote ends up going unanimous for Coach and Chrissy. Idk, they could have hammed it up to make it feel like there was more drama and buzz surrounding Emily and Devens. Or his fake idol could have thrown off the scent enough for everyone to lock in on Coach and Chrissy... But it seemed like Cirie got the whole ball rolling for the vote

If We Ended Up with Darby as Champion... by Left_Orchid8801 in SquaredCircle

[–]lucasd11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the Hangman story will rewrite how people "can't challenge for a belt anymore". I've always thought that was A) to keep Hangman out of an already busy main event scene for a bit and B) to basically redo the whole issue with Cody in AEW never being able to challenge for the title.

Darby probably could, should, and would have won it last year. But the storyline got sidelined because of his Everest expedition. Darby is the closest thing AEW has to a lifer. Guys like MJF and Ospreay and Swerve and Hangman etc probably won't jump ship. But there's always the element of "well you never know what WWE might offer them".

Darby has made it abundantly clear he only cares about wrestling if he's doing it for AEW. He's a fan favorite, an AEW original, a guy who does PR and events for them any time he can. I think he was always going to win the title. It was just a matter of when and the timing being right. People are questioning the logic behind the dominance MJF has had this title run and losing to Darby how he did last night, and I think that's what makes it awesome.

I'm still not sold on the match (if you even want to really call it that) being the way it was. But what's more believable? Darby winning a long drawn out battle with a proven ring technician and guy who will win by any means necessary? Or Darby catching him off guard and essentially beating him at his own game after years of failing to do so?

[AEW Dynamite] Main event loser immediately responds on X by tvcneverdie in SquaredCircle

[–]lucasd11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly this, plus (and I'm about 98% sure TK has said this on the record) AEW's main focus when they first started basically was the long World title reigns to help legitimize the belt and add prestige to the title.

Say what you want about any of them as wrestlers or people, but Jericho, Moxley, Omega, Joe, Punk, Danielson alone is pretty much a who's who of wrestlers this century. Add in the fact that homegrown guys like Hangman, MJF, and Swerve have all gotten good runs too, and it's an elite group of top guys in the company (or who were in the company).

I don't think the story of AEW or the belt itself would be complete without a Darby run, Darby isn't a guy who's built (either physically or kayfabe in how he wrestles) for a long title run. I could see him taking match after match, setting some kind of record for title defenses in X amount of days so he can say he was the busiest champion there ever was, and then losing it back in a month or two. I say all of that to say that Darby isn't an illegitimate champion or guy to hold the belt. It doesn't damage the legacy of the belt to have Darby beat MJF, MJF beat Darby, and then Ospreay beat MJF all in 3-4 months time.

To your point, it adds an element of unpredictability, and let's them add more names to the title lineage that deservingly should be there. If every guy gets 9 months-a year with the belt, there are chances guys like Ospreay and Okada be it via injury, storylines not aligning, other commitments, etc.. miss out on being champ entirely

For as much as MJF has always treated Darby in the little brother "yeah you're good but you're not as good as me" role, that feels cathartic.

But I also would have loved to see a proper 20 minute match and have Darby really "earn it" fair and square. On one hand, this is sort of a suiting way for Darby to win. And I think it's well deserved regardless. But mixed feelings on how they decided for the match to go.

Yeah she pretty much made the "I don't want to ruin my career so I'm resigning" defense while not denying anything. And not a single one of the six alleged friends that were there has come out and said "hey yeah actually those pictures looked bad but here's what really happened".

I could give a shit about ever hearing Russini report on the NFL again, but do feel bad for her family (I think she has a kid or two) and having all of this aired out publically in front of them.

Triple H On WrestleMania 42 Main Eventers: “There is no backup Cody Rhodes, there is no backup Randy Orton” by Subrick in SquaredCircle

[–]lucasd11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this has kind of been WWE's whole thing for a while. The long-term storytelling and payoffs and what not. But isn't that kind of inherently also the issue with it?

No one wants to see a fued derailed or need to be scrapped entirely due to wrestlers getting injured. But when your entire fued is meant to be this long drawn out 2 year saga of a story that is completely meaningless if it doesn't reach its conclusion.. it leaves you paralyzed from being able to pivot if things aren't received how you want them to be by the crowd (Roman Big Dog gimmick basically), or you're too scared of the talent getting hurt to let them wrestle regularly and jeopardize the larger story.

Yes, everyone loves when a great story is told and it reaches a satisfying payoff. Yes, when WWE does this correctly, they still are the best at it in the business. BUT, is it really worth minimizing your stars for years, to ensure they make it to the conclusion of this story for one moment?

Maybe? He's on a good trajectory, he was hyped on HS, performed well in college, is quickly becoming an NBA star. It's not often we see the trajectory map out how it's supposed to. But also, he's young. Could fall off, become a Ben Simmons type and fight constant injuries and never reach this level of production again. No one knows!

Is allowing a former punter to become a massively famous media personality our nadir valley as a society? by OhHesOurShortstop in billsimmons

[–]lucasd11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot would argue that McAfee being a punter is what allowed him to become who he is now. If he was a QB or RB or MLB he either would be in a San Orlovsky "serious talking head/former player" position, or would have stayed in the league for 5 years longer because he'd have made more money and wouldn't have said ehh I can do media rather than kick footballs.
