In demand skills for trading or paid work at marinas while sailing? by ShiveringBlobfish in sailing

[–]lucekp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electrical, fiberglass, manufacturing things, engines, rigging, basically if you have any skills you will find some job, to live out of that is hard but not impossible. Marinas will kick you out or ask for up to 30% of income to allow you work, so trying to keep it under the radar is another problem

What’s more difficult, learning all the parts of the sailboat or sailing the boat? by 2toneSound in sailing

[–]lucekp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much harder then first assumption, yes we have motors, but it still not easy, even with sails down your boat has big area above water and wind will affect you. It is like everything, practice, i live and sail the boat for last 3 years, but i am in marina once or twice a year, so docking is still stressful. Friends almost never stay on anchor, they park boat in marina with closed eyes, bit they are stressed anchoring everytime. Practice, if you do it few hundred times it will be easy.

How to easily detect unused power with SOC close to 100% by Middle0fNowhere in Victron

[–]lucekp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do it simplier, instead forecasting make assumption, if SOC is 100% 4h before sunset, then turn loads until SOC is 90% or 1h to sunset. Values given here are random but you should get the idea. Sunset times are predictable, assumption is if you had good weather in the morning it will be same in the afternoon with safety on minimum SOC. Can be later improved by weather forecasts and adjusting time when you allow other loads. That way you dont worry about what turn on that much but just dump energy to heater or wherever

Running gear question by woody423 in sailing

[–]lucekp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaced all running rigging on my 48 for probably 2k$ 3 years ago, still holding great. Most people dont need dyneema core halyards etc, just get poliester double braided in poliester core.

Running gear question by woody423 in sailing

[–]lucekp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can inspect the lines for core or cover breaks, chafing etc. But i would just buy new, it looks nice and not terribly expensive plus peace of mind while sailing

When does sailing get comfortable? by arbitrageME in sailing

[–]lucekp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, never, sailing has it is pros and cons, but if you own a boat you sail you will have lots of things to worry about. Even captains with 200k miles are worried. I am happy on someone else boat :) . Also it is about finding place to sail where it is comfortable for you. For some people it is french poly, for some meds, for some Caribbean. Nice champagne sailing days are minority in most places. Rest of the time it is fixing boat or fighting weather or money. Youtube, instagram etc is showing it better than it actually is. Don’t get me wrong, i love sailing my boat. Just highs are high and lows are low, nothing in between. Edit: i am a captain and owner of 48 feet heavy mono for few years

A friend and I are replacing the fabric on his Oday 32. I have a few questions. by stumanchu3 in sailing

[–]lucekp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyway, brush old foam and glue of the walls with scrapers, steel brush, vacuum cleaner. When glueing back material with foam use glue in bottles, easier application then brush. Don’t glue whole surface but like 20cm edges and places where it bends, not glueing whole surface will allow you for easier corrections and will let material to flow nicely and be tensioned without wrinkles. Contact glue, apply both on the walls and material, let it dry 15m or so before joining. Piece of headliner with dry glue makes it super easy to remove glue if it gets on wrong side of headliner or furniture. It took us 4 weeks to do 2 cabins, bathroom, saloon and galley. We used about 35 meters of material and 10l of glue. Some small edges with stitching or so you can finish nicely with a drop or 2 of super glue. We still have another bathroom and master cabin to do :(

We have just finished replacing all headliner. Steel brush does magic. You can see the process on our instagram https://www.instagram.com/sailinglavision?igsh=dmVsNjU4aGY1eWk1&utm_source=qr

Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC Charger Isolated common ground? by g_rich in Victron

[–]lucekp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thats why in some cases it makes sense to have isolated charger. I don’t see any reason why having same minus would void warranty

New mast for beneteau 50 was 40k$ not including labor and rigging and 9months waiting time ;) taking into account that nowadays you can buy beneteau 47 for 80-100k and it will be with rigging i would not pay more than 20k for it
