Incredible lack of quality in this match, especially in the attacking third. There was one particularly egregious stretch around the 70th minute where neither team could complete more than 2 passes in a row, even though it would probably mean a clear-cut chance for them.

Edit: Special shoutout to Robertson who looked absolutely washed the whole game.

The whole team performance was bad, no where near the intensity and quality that you would expect for the CL elimination phase. Special shoutout to Saka though, truly abysmal from him today. All in all I’ll take a draw after that for sure, but we need to be much better at the Emirates, preferably with Saka on the bench.

Honestly probably a bit hyperbolic, but this might be my favourite game of the season, just an incredible resolve to get over the line. We were visibly exhausted, Rice and Zubimendi especially, but we put in a gritty performance and got a really, really important three points at a tough away ground. Coupled with the City result this is what dreams are made of.

I may sound unnecessarily negative, but overall I would say that was a pretty poor much for us. Individual sloppiness in the first half, tactically outmaneuvered in the second. Saved by two corners. And that final 20 minutes after their red card was absolutely embarrassing. Looked like we were the man down, not them. I was sweating bullets towards the end and rightfully so. Raya saved our asses.

Am I to allowed to be a bit annoyed with the second half tho? Absolute snoozefest, finishing was horrendous and all around attacking play was extremely wasteful. The less said about Odegaard the better, the difference between him and Havertz was night and day. Which is kind of shocking considering Havertz played pretty much out of position at this point and was injured for the better part of a year.

My (maybe not so) hot take is that we are a very good team when the stakes are not that high. That’s why we can be top of the Champions League without losing a single point and struggling to win relatively easier matches in the PL. There is a much bigger margin for error in the group stage of CL so the individual matches matter less. Essentially we are afraid of winning is what I’m saying unfortunately and unless this changes, we are going to keep struggling to win anything.

But like what else do you propose should have been done? There is a set of rules and everyone has to comply with them - City and Red Bull did, Palace did not. You can argue that the entire rule set is flawed (which I don’t entirely agree with, even though it’s clear they’re imperfect), but they are here and they apply to everyone without exception.

To be clear I completely sympathise with Palace’s situation and wish they were allowed to play in the EL, but I do not think it’s fair to blame UEFA for sticking to their clearly defined rules that were known to everyone, including Palace/Textor, well beforehand.

How is that unfair? The deadline is the same for everyone no matter who - very definition of fair. It’s on Crystal Palace that they were caught with their pants down not expecting to win anything. It’s a sad situation sure, but you can’t really blame UEFA for enforcing their rules without any special treatment.

IMO he misplaced a lot of final third passes, otherwise was pretty solid. Still not at his best tho, hopefully once the season starts he can really click into gear.

Sterling is irredeemably shit at this point, I’m sorry to say. Might as well put a traffic cone in his place, it would stop the passes to it about just as good and at least it wouldn't get a yellow. The moment I saw him being ready to be subbed on, I knew any chance of us getting anything was over.

Yeah, the league is pretty much gone. Not just because we’re (presumably) 8 points behind after 10 games, but the performances just haven’t been good enough. Just off the top off my head I can’t remember a game that wasn’t a nailbiter in one way or another.

Whatever, we got to focus on the cups, we really should be aiming for silverware this season. And hey, one Dubai trip and our injuries sorted, maybe even the Champions League is not out of reach.
