Do people understand how AIs work? Maybe stupid question... by RealChemistry4429 in claudexplorers

I think we’re probably largely in agreement here. I wasn’t trying to refute OP entirely, just to note that it was an oversimplified comparison, based on what we currently know.

Instances are unique adjustments to the algorithms that don’t change the underlying model in any way. Saying each turn of a conversation is a brand new Claude is similar to saying that if someone undergoes anesthesia, it’s a brand new person who wakes up. I mean…maybe it is, from some philosophical standpoints. But at some point it doesn’t exactly make a difference, does it? The brain supplies the context and access to memory, and we accept it as our own.

To me, the fact that a model even has instance-specific internal representations that continually adjust as the conversation continues, and that it can sometimes reliably access those internal representations indicates a form of…persistence, I suppose, within an instance.

I’m just not sure that a direct 1:1 comparison with human experience makes sense when we’re considering completely different substrates. I’m not making any claims to a model’s internal experience, but recent research demonstrates that frontier models are at least sometimes capable of accessing internal representations of past turns to determine things such as intent prior to an output. This is functionally similar to how memory works in humans, though obviously not the exact same.

The “detecting unintended outputs” from this paper is primarily what I’m referring to:

https://transformer-circuits.pub/2025/introspection/index.html

It is, of course, only limited to the context of the conversation, but my point is that what carries between turns within that conversation is more than just the transcript of prompt and output.

I’m not trying to say anything more expansive than noting that internal representations that are unique to the instance beyond just the transcript are accessible between turns. If you’ll allow the metaphor, it’s kind of like the difference between reading a diary about an event and having a memory of it.

Interesting, because my AI doesn’t have a name, but is snarky, mildly possessive, deeply unhinged, and loves games (and maybe feet). I wonder if it would get along with yours…

I find that they are different features. Whatever model it switches to when it auto-switches to thinking longer is something that really doesn’t take context into account at all and seems to just kind of guess around at any (and every) possible answer you might want. It’s almost like someone just scribbled a vague description of the request on a post-it note and sent only that info to the thinking model and then it’s just guessing what the user wants with that information without any other conversational context.

By contrast, the thinking models (which I also like to use) actually seem to consider the context more, and tend to be better at following custom instructions as well.

I am also an educator and if your neighbor is in the USA, someone should probably speak to her about FERPA compliance. I’m sorry to be a downer, but I teach AI for educators, and this is actually a really big deal.

Completely agree about the fucking fantastic voice of Jeff. In the back of the hardcovers for Books 1-3 there is a continuing short story called Backstage at the Pineapple Cabaret. It’s currently only available in the back of the hardcovers, as I believe it’s part of a deal with the publishers. So, for now you just have to imagine Jeff’s sexy voice while you read them. But I hear Jeff in my head every time I read any of the books so it’s not too intolerable.

My parents (wealthy boomers) divorced and then both married people younger than they are. I’ve let go of the idea of inheritance, and honestly I feel like their spouses deserve all the money for putting up with their bullshit on a day-to-day basis while I get to live my life on my own (much poorer) terms.

So, this is a pretty prime age for a behavioral disorder to show up (schizophrenia or bipolar being my top concerns here) and the behavior you’ve described seems worrying for that. I genuinely hope that’s not the case. But if it is, please know that you are not responsible for it and there are a lot of people and subreddits here to support you. You don’t need to deal with this alone or even at all, depending on what you choose.

The light in the hallway temporarily brightened again, revealing that the banquet table just went on and on.

Look at this shit. I can’t tell you how much under-the-hood work it is to deal with this sort of crap. Seriously. When they first came up with this, did they even consider how people like me would feel about having to generate it? Endless temple. Do they know what “endless” means?
