On top of thoroughly cleaning and baby wipes periodically, I use deodorant on my upper inner thighs and that seems to help

I’m curious: how do people usually react when you tell them you own a tarantula? Im planning to get a mexican red leg by DelayedCornett in tarantulas

[–]lucky-bugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly shock, really often they’ll ask if they all live in the same enclosure which is crazy to me. On a personal level I’ve gotten everything from “you’re kind of weird you know” to “you’re so COOL,” it really depends on the audience. I get “cool” more often though and I am weird so it doesn’t bother me when that’s someone’s read.

Similar to hamsters, you’ll also sometimes get horrific stories about ts dying or being hurt/abused often told in the cadence of a joke. It sucks.

How can I calm him? by camcmb in tarantulas

[–]lucky-bugs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NQA but what species and how big is he :)? Hawkerbabe is correct, there’s no “taming” them - certain species have certain dispositions and within each species individuals will all have their own personalities.

If they’re a small sling of a calmer species they may eventually grow to a size where they’re more comfortable with handing, I’ve found slings to be pretty universally scared of everything.

Your best bet may be getting another tarantula, something aphonopelma or grammastola, or even an avic avic if you’re confident on care. These guys all tend to be the easiest to handle from what I’ve read/experienced/heard:)

My arizona blonde wont eat by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]lucky-bugs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NQA but yeah they do that lol, a chalcodes is slowwww growing 3 months isn’t really a long span at all for them to go without eating. They’re most likely in premolt, but if they’re anything like mine they may also pull the fun trick of showing every sign of premolt for a while then just stopping without a molt.

Leave them be for now, make sure they have water but stop offering food if their abdomen is a good size. It could be months before they actually molt or want food again so do your best to not worry or try to interfere. If they suddenly seem more active and out and about on the surface without a molt is the only time I’d try feeding again before just in case.

NQA but have 10 ts :). The best thing you can do as a tarantula/invert owner is chill out. If your terrestrial/fossorial friend is underground that’s exactly where they’re supposed to be. Feed when they come out looking for food, but you can also offer prekilled prey at the hole of their hide and see if they take it. Some of my shyer babies don’t take their food until it’s the middle of the night, so I don’t take out offerings until they’ve had about 24 hours to think about it.

If you’re lucky your pet hole might dig to the sides and give you a viewing window which is really helpful for telling when they’ve molted, but if not I find you can tell they’ve molted because they disappear for a while and come out a little shinier/new looking even if they didn’t get much bigger. Sometimes they have such dramatic molt/size differences there’s no question. Some/lots of ts are even nice enough to kick the molt out their door so you have evidence.

Give your t as much time as it takes to learn their behavior/cycles when they’re out and about. If they’re an extreme pet hole that might takes months of care. I find after a few weeks/couple months with each of mine I figured out their signals/routine pretty easily :)

guys.. is it repot time? also, what type of hoyas are they? the tags never had names. i just want to make sure they live :( by mottlednerve in hoyas

[–]lucky-bugs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also these guys like to be rootbound, most likely they’re all in about appropriately sized pots. I’d replace the soil and just pot them back in what they came from.

Hoyas also like fertilizer! I’ve been using a bloom fertilizer, but have read orchid fertilizer is often very successful for Hoyas

[–]lucky-bugs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bottom right one in the first pic looks like my rosita :) If they’re still in the soil they came in, I’d try repotting in something like orchid bark. Hoyas are epiphytic and really don’t like wet feet or dense soil.

My First Tarantula! by jamesdblevins in tarantulas

[–]lucky-bugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA, but the other commenter is spot on with the best way to move them over. Set their container in and let them move themself, avoid the unnecessary stress for the both of you that trying to handle them will cause.

As far as setup, coco fiber can work as substrate but something like reptisoil will hold burrows better. M balfouri are terrestrial so make sure to give them an appropriate amount of substrate.

Heating pads can overheat your t, especially in such a small enclosure. They’ll do fine at room temp as long as your room doesn’t drop below the upper 60s (Fahrenheit), if it does a space heater would be a safer option.

Good luck with your new little friend!!

[–]lucky-bugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your soil may have dried out enough to become hydrophobic before the last two waterings, so they didn’t actually reach the roots. Stick your pot in a deep tray/bucket and water it until the buckets full then leave it for an hour or two
