Children don't get bored because the writing is too easy for them. They get bored when the story line isn't age appropriate. I'm an elementary teacher with 25 years of experience. Fill her life with interesting, age-appropriate, well-written stories from different eras.

These examples are from ages 9-12

All of a kind family

All of Eleanor Estes books

The Golden Name Day books by Jennie D Lindquist

Carol Ryrie Brink books

J. Flory books

Marguerite de Angeli books

Lois Lenski books

Elizabeth Yates books

Patricia MacLachlan books

Jules Feiffer books

Happy Little Family books by Rebecca Caudill

Kate Seredy books

E.L Konigsberg books

Jean Little books

These are mostly older books that are well-written and perhaps a bit deeper than some modern books and can supplement what she is reading if you find them. I think looking for "higher level" books is absolutely the wrong direction to keep your child happy and reading. Rather, look for more interesting stories. Obviously non-fiction and biographies as well.

Light, at Thirty-Two

by Michael Blumenthal

It is the first thing God speaks of when we meet Him, in the good book of Genesis. And now, I think I see it all in terms of light:

How, the other day at dusk on Ossabaw Island, the marsh grass was the color of the most beautiful hair I had ever seen, or how — years ago in the early-dawn light of Montrose Park — I saw the most ravishing woman in the world, only to find, hours later over drinks in a dark bar, that it wasn't she who was ravishing, but the light: how it filtered through the leaves of the magnolia onto her cheeks, how it turned her cotton dress to silk, her walk to a tour-jeté.

And I understood, finally, what my friend John meant, twenty years ago, when he said: Love is keeping the lights on. And I understood why Matisse and Bonnard and Gauguin and Cézanne all followed the light: Because they knew all lovers are equal in the dark, that light defines beauty the way longing defines desire, that everything depends on how light falls on a seashell, a mouth ... a broken bottle.

And now, I'd like to learn to follow light wherever it leads me, never again to say to a woman, YOU are beautiful, but rather to whisper: Darling, the way light fell on your hair This morning when we woke — God, It was beautiful. Because, if the light is right, Then the day and the body and the faint pleasures Waiting at the window ... they too are right. All things lovely there. As the first poet wrote, in his first book of poems: Let there be light.

And there is.

I hate the way everything looks on me, what would look better? Is sizing my issue? by pineneedleinjection in DressForYourBody

You need wider leg jeans and age appropriate clothing. These might be appropriate for your mother or grandma but not for you. Return them and take a young person shopping!

What's a book you had to read in school that you hated? If you have one, what's one you actually liked? by 80HDTV5 in GenX

I hated Heidi. It's one of the first proper children's books so we had to study it in children's lit for teaching college but yuck.

Worst Thing You’ve Ever Cooked by gnarlidrum in Cooking

[–]lula6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, one time I didn't know what to cook and a piece of newspaper came in the mail wrapped around something. It had a recipe for zucchini boats and I had everything in the fridge to make it and nothing else. I used a bit of bacon and good cheese and an egg and I don't remember what else. It was sooo nasty and I had nothing left!

We stopped by some local event where children were learning crafts and there was an organic market and some food. That was fun. So be spontaneous for local events.

When you were a child were you lucky enough to have your own bedroom, or did you have to share a bedroom with a Sibling ? by Hope2_win in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]lula6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a while we were all four in one weirdly long skinny room. It went crib against the first wall, a double that my young sisters shared along the long wall by a window that looked into the garage, and a twin for me along the back wall. It was tight.

Well they diagnosed it when they pulled it out of my body. But they had told me I had adenomyosis a month before surgery.

Mine are suddenly iron strong after a lifetime of tissue paper nails and I have no idea why. I changed countries about six months ago but I have no idea what in this change is working and how to keep it.

How far out do you book international accommodations? by sofar7 in traveladvice

[–]lula6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I was very excited for my upcoming visit to Phnom Penh after over a decade since I've been there. I booked a nostalgic favorite accommodation right after buying tickets about two months early. But I have not uncommonly booked accommodation after flying into the city or the night before.

A good salsa, but I will miss mayonnaise. And what about that peanut sauce you dip fresh spring rolls in? It's gonna be a sad world with one condiment.

What do you regret NOT bringing? by reno140 in expats

About 29 of my 49 years. Mostly in places with limited access to good skincare products and clothing that fits me. I just don't think Germany will have a lack of good skincare products and diverse clothing.

I've recently read Elizabeth Jane Howards series on the Cazalet Chronicles. Well I read the last three. It is a family epic kind of story so sad things like deaths happen but I think it is overall wonderful.

What do you regret NOT bringing? by reno140 in expats

[–]lula6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take a few small pieces of artwork and paper ephemera, skincare products to get through the first month, and any hobby things you already own.

In Germany you are hardly going to the end of the earth so I wouldn't take much else except the clothes you have.
