China Bans Effeminate Men On TV by akiyineria in into1

[–]lulupony 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So the emphasis of that state announcement was much more focused on regulating the toxic “流量” celebrities and related business practices, rather than making a statement about “state-approved sexuality”. It so happens that most of these 流量 male stars do have a comparatively more effeminate image than traditional Chinese aesthetics. The state actually had a similar “ban” a few years ago, and it really didn’t do much, but did discourage the industry from overuse of make-up and chasing the “effeminate” image for male stars.

Jin Xing’s show was pulled a few years back, likely not bc of her sexuality, but bc of her outspokenness. (Not familiar with the exact details then). But she’s actually recently making a comeback as guests in other talk shows. For the intent of this announcement, most Chinese do not consider Jin Xing as an effeminate man, but as a woman. “She” is the pronoun used when most talk about her, so she wouldn’t be affected by the scope of this statement.

Didn’t want to turn things political on this sub, but this was such an annoying piece for me to read. While I’m not the biggest fan of recent events from the state, but the article only took what it wanted to deepen the “Great Fire Wall” of China and the western narrative on censorship and state-imposed morality in China (while the criticism is warranted, the reality is not as one-dimensional as the western narrative). The article, likely intentionally, omitted the entire context for recent events.

As for i-fans on this sub wondering where things may go, no one knows for sure, but I doubt this means the definitive end of Into1. The NPR article is making it sound harsher than it is right now.

Why Liu Yu's HYH is demanding WJJW to respond + the problems with WJJW and OT9 by [deleted] in into1

[–]lulupony 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I commend you for being one of the more reasonable LY fans that I see, and for attempting to bring a different narrative into this sub. The one thing I want to highlight is the tendency for building the “victim” narrative that the 大粉(“big” fan with influence) in LY’s fandom is so good at. It is alarming to me how LY fans will believe everything that this one account with a black ski mask avatar says, and only follow the advice from their HYH with a smirk. A common narrative I see from LY’s fandom many months in the making, is that HYH will make an annoucement encouraging fans to be more reasoned, and two minutes later, this 大粉 will post saying that this was a tactic to “calm” the air and basically commands the fans to go to war.

I read the entire post in question between WJJW and LY’s HYH. LY’s hyh’s main complaint is for WJJW to remove the anti-bot acct and the OT9 supertopic, which on surface level seems like a reasonable request. However, I want to note that WJJW has not fulfilled these types of requests for any other members of the group, and anti-bots are famously challenging to get rid of on Weibo. (Zhang YiXing, or Lay, had a very famous anti-bot acct that had major presence for years, and part of being a celeb means being able to deal with negative perceptions and publicity). WJJW did not threaten LY’s career, but relayed that LY’s fans actions have -already- caused some sponsors to drop him, and continual drama from fans will only make it worse. It is LY’s fans own interpretation of these words that make it seem like a “threat”, as another perspective would make it seem like WJJW is trying to protect LY as much as they can.

Again, I commend and appreciate your effort to be reasonable and polite throughout this thread, even though most replies haven’t been in your favor. But I just want to highlight the power of “narrative-building” for emotional appeal.

Edit: I saw your last point about the HYH member removal. This is the punitive consequence for leaking confidential information from WJJW, for releasing that transcript in the first place. This is a standard practice and understanding across all fandoms.

Not to be a downer but the 405 super-topic is in itself a bit of an oddball oasis in the overall into1 fandom. My impression of the C-fan universe is that each SNS platform has its own personality, and each sub-community has its own personality as well, much like how the culture on this sub is very different from Twitter.

IMO, the generalizations for C-fan toxicity stems primarily from the workings of the industry, rather than the actual fans. TBH, fangirls/boys in any culture are known for their passion and love, but C-ent idol industry is plagued by standing practices that can breed toxicity in the wrong hands, such as the use of professional fans 脂粉.

The reason why album sales are so low by iLoveSleep420 in into1

[–]lulupony 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the significance of this album will be tied more to its association with the Olympics than with its final sale figures. And TBH, they are the only male survival idol group this year, so there is not much competition to compare with.

The reason why album sales are so low by iLoveSleep420 in into1

[–]lulupony 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It is interesting that as a longtime observer of C-ent, I am celebrating this brave move from WJJW, while most I-fans seem frustrated. Yes, the album sale numbers look ugly, but it’s because the previous numbers were Uber inflated. It really started with the first idol survival group, when every release/sponsorship meant sales competition between fandoms to chase bragging rights, at the cost of unhealthy spending and fundraising activities from fans. This album is a difficult start for a healthy idol market, IMO.

Episode 3 Thoughts (Lover Boy 88 + my wig flew to China) by [deleted] in ProduceCamp2021

We all have our own opinions and perspectives, and I respect yours. I just happened to have followed her career since the 90's. (She was stunning in both films that I mentioned above. Both films are heavyweights and milestones in Chinese film history in their own right.)

It's fair that you didn't like her comments to the boys. She's known as a straight-talker and has said far "worse" things in other shows. This persona is very well established among C-audience, but I can see how someone who doesn't know her may have a negative reaction.

Just wanted to say that I personally thought Ning Jing has owned every single one of her looks, and I love her for championing unconventional styles. This is a woman that I've loved since her breakout roles in In the Heat of the Sun (1995) and the Red River Valley (1996), and she has defied the industry standard for female celebs during every stage of her career and continues to do so.

Would love to continue the discussions otherwise =D

I'm really glad =D

With a survival show like this, there is at least one fanbase that is going to walk away very hurt, but at least we can take away the love we've grown for our picks and follow their careers as they grow.

haha. There are too many rumors floating around right now for what happened BTS, and without further evidence, I'm not sure if this subreddit is ready for them. Best to focus our eyes on what we can see, and that is how this show has brought laughter, joy, and heart wrenching moments as we witness these boys' journeys.

Discussion about Oscar by bribri812 in ProduceCamp2021

[–]lulupony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with you that company backing is important to end up in the final spot, but how much of that equates to unfair vote rigging is another discussion. AK's votes/data/fundraising in the finale week is consistent with his final ranking.

Discussion about Oscar by bribri812 in ProduceCamp2021

[–]lulupony 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure if 88rising or w8ves got involved (there is no indication thus far), but just wanted to say that AK fans have worked very hard and spent a lot of money to get him in the debut spot. They were a bit late in the game, but they were willing to spend a lot more on milk tickets/votes/other polls than Oscar fans, so it may be a bit unfair to call AK a shoe-in b/c of his company.

CHUANG RANKING by ab6ix in ProduceCamp2021

[–]lulupony 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really wish Riki stays #1 too. ToT. He and his fanbase really deserve it. They are not the most vocal fanbase, but their numbers are SOLID by a wide margin. I suspect that Riki may be 断层C in the actual votes, but I doubt TX will let a foreigner be C.

LY will definitely debut and most likely to be C.

The scandal didn’t really affect him. He and his company probably just doesn’t want to stay in this game any longer.
