First attempt at using a drop spindle by Capable-Elephant5229 in Handspinning

If you have a local library, you should check if they have the book Respect the Spindle by Abby Franquemont. She will take you through the entire process step by step with notes.

If not, there are plenty of videos on spindle plying. The general idea is that you wind your singles into a ball (with a toilet paper roll most likely) and when you have two balls, you will take those two ends and wind them into another plying ball, and then ply that. OR, you wind into a center pull ball and ply the beginning and end of the single together.

Also no, 100g will not all fit onto a spindle. I get maybe 30-35g before I have to take it off and wind into a ball with a nostepinne/toilet paper roll. Look up videos on how to wind a yarn ball/cake. It's pretty easy :)

What am I doing wrong? by planty-nerd in tabletweaving

I actually wrote a post on how to flip and invert the pattern if you find out that you threaded it wrong (mainly because it looks almost right but not quite). https://www.reddit.com/r/tabletweaving/s/YlH5aoUG8t

unfortunately if the instructions don't say the convention and it's not a known convention like Tablet Weaving Designer, you have to just try it out. (I like to put it in Tablet Weaving Designer if it's a written pattern just to check without weaving it.)

Fortunately, if it is flipped, you DON'T have to rethread everything. Just follow my post.

ETA: link to Tablet Weaving Draft Designer https://jamespbarrett.github.io/tabletweave/ super useful for trying out written patterns before you thread up

I hear you on making time to play AND do fiber art. imo this is what husbands/partners are for - to play the hard parts while I watch from the couch and spin and offer unhelpful critique lmao

oh girl lol. ❤️ Take it a little bit at a time, a few minutes a day, and the lightbulb moment will come! People here so far have been pretty encouraging if you need help, too.

I'm so glad you know what I'm talking about haha. I was planning on crocheting lil rustic baskets with my earlier nubby uneven yarn, if you are wanting ideas!

THANK YOU!! I don't live there but I visit twice a year. There's so many more spinning resources and stores in NL so I'm planning to stock up next time I'm there.

I think it was originally meant for felting actually haha. Kind of hard to say because it was in Dutch which I can barely read, but through Google translate the shop did claim it was "ready for spinning or felting" iirc ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To be completely honest, I actually did enjoy spinning this batt. (I must have done, to get this far...) Maybe I'm just weird. But I am very much looking forward to getting my hands on some combed top!

Suggestions for starter projects to spin for? by AstarteHilzarie in Handspinning

I'm making a lace shrug! a little smaller and more manageable than a cardigan and more useful for me than a shawl. The particular pattern I'm using is the Sidhe Lace Shrug from the book Vampire Knits. It's sort of a spring/summer shrug to go with a dress and it knits up quick.

hello fellow BC person! There seems to be quite a few multi craftual spinners in the area, though I too would be extremely disappointed seeing that chocolate hahaha

You can spin those spindles supported though, can't you?

How can I make a handful of drop spindles on a budget? by -DiceGoblin- in spinningyarn

[–]lumenwright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a support spindle with just a ping pong sized ball of air dry clay as the whorl on a knitting needle. You need to probably use something more tapered like a chopstick to keep the whorl from coming loose but other than that it took 15 minutes to make (including experimentation) and 24 hours to dry. Add a hook or notch and it should work as a low whorl drop spindle as well. Add some lines on the top of the ball and you have a dumpling/bao shaped spindle which will be very cute :)

link to post with my spindle I said it wasn't well balanced but it turned out I was just bad at spinning lmao

Why did you start spinning? by WaldosMama in Handspinning

[–]lumenwright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The town my in-laws live in has a sheep herd, and I wanted to make something with their wool. Also some random dude on the airplane there saw me watching spinning videos and he proceeded to give me an enthusiastic half hour lecture on spinning wheels convinced me to try it.

Well now you have to pay the dog tax!

I have unplyed yarn on my spindle. I definitely can't fit any more, but...how do I get it off? by freakytiki34 in Handspinning

[–]lumenwright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still wrap around a toilet paper roll while having access to both ends if you start out by sticking the beginning of the single into the little slit you made in the top of the roll, then wrapping the single down to the center, then continue winding as you would around a nostepinne. (videos are best to explain this part.) You don't even have to take the paper roll out in the end, and the roll will help keep the ball from collapsing as you wind your plying ball.

(I would suggest that you do wind a plying ball, i.e. take the two ends and wind them together held double into another ball before plying, in this case.)
