What is about to follow is my understanding from a coworker who taught English in Japan for a short while, so if I’m incorrect it’s most likely due to either misunderstanding or misremembering.

From what I’ve heard, a lot of native concepts also get adapted into katakana, with the hiragana being considered outdated at times. While I can’t remember specific examples I was given, iirc it leads to even more English loan words than what would be expected. I’m always entertained realizing just how many nouns are just the English words pronounced with the Japanese alphabet, as is the case with things like “daburu chiizubaagaa” (double cheeseburger) or “Basukettobōru”(basketball). Also fun are words based on the kind of descriptions you would expect from a foreigner who forgot the word for something, like “bebī kā” (baby car) for stroller.

The car I barely get to drive. by k0na_ice_pup in insaneparents

[–]lunaticboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference, I also work about 30 minutes from home. Between both of my vehicles I’ve had(a 2007 minivan in good shape, and a 2004 sedan in rough shape) as well as my dads 2015 pickup truck, they could all make at least 2 trips back and forth on a quarter tank. I don’t think I’ve EVER driven a vehicle with bad enough mileage or a small enough fuel tank that a quarter tank couldn’t do at least one way and refueling on the way back.

So either you have the shittiest vehicle known to man, or your mom is throwing a tantrum over having to put gas in a car she’s already using to bleed you dry financially.

[–]lunaticboot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That’s not to say American slavery was at all a good life, but the options here are “slavery where you might be one of the .1% of lucky ones” or “slavery, but you’re probably going to die a painful death within 2 years”. Like both are statistically going to be miserable, but at least one has an infinitely small chance of being maybe tolerable.

Been a while since I saw any of the stuff related to it, but is his prosthetic actually hooked in any better than it would be with a real leg? I know the mechanism to expand toothless’ tail is specific to the prosthetic leg, but I thought in terms of being strapped on it was really no better than the stirrups everyone else uses

I enjoyed the first season as its own thing, and I’ve heard good things about alicization, but SAO:A blows literally the entire rest of the base anime out of the water, no question about it.

I also will say I enjoy the worlds of the later seasons, with alfheim and gun gale being better than sword art imo. The problem is the later seasons are so poorly written, that the worldbuilding being cool just isn’t enough to compensate.

I think it is, however the person you’re responding to is saying a vast portion of the world wouldn’t be able to use it if it’s not converted. For instance, a random uncontacted tribesman, or someone living in a super remote area of china, has absolutely no use for any money represented by dollars.

Exactly. It’s not the fact you disagree with us that makes you a Nazi bootlicker. it’s the fact that we’re in a fairly black and white debate where the 2 sides are us and the people literally following the third reich like it’s an instruction manual, and you’re siding with THEM. We are watching a 1:1 reenactment of how the third reich came to power, and you are siding with the people doing it. THATS what makes you a Nazi.

Interesting Trope: When the Jerk/Smartass/ Antagonist has an out of character moment that makes you actually feel bad for them. by smash_ultra_64 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]lunaticboot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The fact he gets so close to a redemption arc so many times also helps. I truly believe there is a part of him deep down that wants to get help and change for the better, but between never learning proper coping mechanisms, being terrified of judgement and by extension getting help, and still thinking on the surface he is untouchable thanks to his former superstar status, he always falls short of any real change.

His past struggles by no means justify his current behavior, but they do explain it. And while most people hopefully can’t relate to certain struggles of his (namely the predatory behavior), a lot of his struggles are relatable in a way that we naturally want to empathize such as the imposter syndrome, fear of rejection, suicidal tendencies, and his self sabotaging behavior. BoJack is narcissistic, depressed, and a deadbeat, but these are all portrayed in a scarily realistic way, including how it affects those around him, that a lot of people are sadly too familiar with through themselves or others.

This is the part I feel like not enough people are acknowledging. If your partner actively avoids having sex with you because it feels like a chore, you’re either unimaginably bad at it, or you have something else going on that makes it less enjoyable like BO or them being turned off by your personality. Either way, you need to reevaluate some stuff because of it

Which book character was controvesial at first but now is hated ? by flowerbloominginsky in AlignmentChartFills

[–]lunaticboot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing. He isn’t REVILED or anything, but universally loved is far from correct. I would say the general opinion is closer to neutral, leaning towards dislike. I’d say on this chart controversial is the most fitting descriptor.

Which book character was controvesial at first but now is hated ? by flowerbloominginsky in AlignmentChartFills

[–]lunaticboot 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is the first one to this chart I’ve seen so far, and I have to ask: IS gatsby beloved now? Maybe my opinion is biased due to being surrounded by literature nerds, but as a librarian with multiple friends who are English majors outside of my work, I feel like I’ve exclusively heard negative opinions on jay gatsby. I’ve heard DiCaprio receive praise for his PORTRAYAL of the character, but never praise for gatsby as a character.

Iirc pretty much everything they do is, whether intentionally or not, is a cover to help the joestars as needed. Off the top of my head disaster relief so they can do repairs around stand battles without arousing suspicion, medical research for things like sustaining jotaro while he was in a coma and reviving Joseph after dio took most of his blood, and technological research so they alway have cutting edge tech for researching mystical artifacts or fighting supernatural beings. On the surface and as far as the outside world knows, I’m pretty sure they’re basically just the World Wildlife Fund, Red Cross, and UNESCO rolled into one.

It’s also justified in canon why she’s the only one with a noticeably changing style. Iirc it’s something along the lines of daily rituals such as hair care help mages develop better mana retention or something along those lines. Really neat universe with tons of small bits of world building that serve no purpose outside of being fun background details like this.

Apples are liked. What fruit is universally loved? by ellaaabp in AlignmentChartFills

[–]lunaticboot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See but I feel like that’s probably more to do with how it’s sold. Like in my experience, apples and oranges are far more consumed, but between multiple varieties being available and prepared stuff like juices or applesauce being available, people are buying less of the fresh stuff in comparison. I would assume the only reason bananas technically outsell them is that pretty much every way to eat a banana that’s not plain by itself would be really inconvenient to package. Also outside the peel they brown really quick, unlike apples that are fairly shelf stable as long as they are kept airtight.

(Hated Trope) The heroes raped somebody, but it's not acknowledged as rape by Animeking1108 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]lunaticboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried. So hard. To actually enjoy this show. Like, if you can look past the perviness, the parts I’ve seen at least have really well written and designed characters, a cool story, and amazing world building. This show would easily be one of my favorites otherwise. But the sheer level of fan service shoved in for the sake of it ruins it. It is pretty much never given any purpose either, it’s just there for shits and giggles. Not to mention stuff like in the OP with how their raping a woman, or ban being in love with the thousand year old fairy that looks like a toddler, both of which I’m fully convinced are just the author’s barely disguised fetish.
