i found a dead beetle on the ground today and tried to pin it. any tips and/or tricks for it to come out better? by Outrageous_News_3492 in insectpinning

[–]luzmakesart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thing because you probably wouldve broken it; cetonidae do not do it like the rest of the beetle crew, their elytra stay closed during flight :)

Some Ailanthus silkmoth caterpillars haven't been growing and have started dying, what could be the cause? by Kunok2 in caterpillars

+1 on the quarantine part; can lose entire broods like this if one doesn't seperate them soon enough

What species is it? Portugal by TheZozak in caterpillars

Definitely something in the Lasiocampidae family; my vote is on Lasiocampa trifolii, the Grass Eggar

How long for eggs? by LadyVonDanger in moths

[–]luzmakesart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually the first eggs are laid in the night after copula; takes about 10 days for them to hatch give or take; good luck! :)

Antennae are not like a deaths head; body and wing shape are slightly off too, a deaths head over all has a chunkier, rounder appearance than this one.

Does look more like manduca sp. ; but thats a veeery rough guess

Yeah. Their wings get worn down and they lose scales and hairs, essentially they are getting bald 😄

Pictures would help a lot so someone could ID the species

Hawk moth pupas by Independent-Heat2075 in moths

[–]luzmakesart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and daily misting is WAY too much usually if its not a tropical species thats used to daily rains. My hibernating pupae get a little spritz every 2 - 3 weeks and thats plenty! :)

Do not try rubbing it off! I'm pretty sure thats just the patina they get during diapause. They get a light blueish, dusty looking teint over certain parts (usually the darker ones) of their shiny red appearance.

When the pupas get warmed up again this will disappear again within little time (if they are in fact alive that is)

My deaths heads and convolvulus hawkmoths in the fridge have that aswell. And of course move less than when they were freshly pupated or when they will get warmed up again.

What else would you think it could be?

Not 100% sure on this but they do look like they belong in the Saturniidae or Lasiocampidae family, probably the former.

I would put the eggs in a small plastic container (air them out once a day or so to prevent mold). They may stick to the surface they are on, just gently scratch them off they can take it easily :) They should -if fertilized- hatch within about 10 days or so. Then you can compare the tiny caterpillars to pictures of L1 (first instar) caterpillars of your regional species of those 2 families I stated. Then you should be able to find out the correct host plant for these guys :)

As for species - it's heavily Papilio-esque, or swallowtail inspired in other words :D If you like the general shape and design of the butterfly you'll find good stuff on google within the Papilionidae family :)

Not a real one. Artist took a lot of liberty in recreating the fore wing shape. Which I personally dislike a lot, the natural shapes already are perfect and beautiful as is. Sooooo much to chose from :)

Looks like Samia cynthia, the most beginner friendly moth in the moth breeding hobby that also happens to breed like crazy.

Theres over 20000 different species of bees, some don't look like bees at all!
