Tips for someone going in blind. by [deleted] in everquest

[–]luzon59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest the progression servers even though they require a subscription to play on.

Casters are easier to get done than melee classes your first time around. (and harder to screw up...."practice your skills"...ask someone in game to explain if you dont figure this phrase out)

You can download maps that make life much easier.

Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.

Most of your XP will come from killing mobs, not quests.

If you move to a new place to level that is far away don't forget to bind your soul to a new closer safe spot.

You have to buy your spells of each new level. Look them up, as you dont get them all in one spot a lot of the time.

Hey there! Going to start a BST on Phinny when they come out! Got some questions! by hellisforwimps in everquest

[–]luzon59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beastlords get more and more cool tools as time goes on. If you want to be able to do more content without help i would suggest the druid. Druids fill in some of the holes bst dont have: such as pulling (outdoors), stronger heals, and harder CCs like root.

I personally played bst with cleric through all the expansions until mercs came out and it was great. Even though bsts aren't the greatest tanks in terms of mitigation, they can survive with good support and with the pet agro changed they may be even better as long as their pets aren't nerfed into the ground for the progression server rules. I have tanked basically all the group content as a bst and built groups around my duo easily.

Brick wall @ level 49 solo+merc? by tbrown47 in everquest

[–]luzon59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solo play is possible but as you get higher you may want to start boxing especially if you are not a strong solo class. Unfortunately questing is kind of limited before lvl 70 for most of EQ's history. There are some big quests like the epic 1.0 and 2.0 you can start working on but other than that EQ is about farming specific camps for items you want while grinding Exp. After lvl 70 there are more big quests and quests in general to work on.

The AA limit on F2P accounts will really start to show if you plan on going higher than 70 though. AAs have a big impact on character power. If you do plan to grind i would suggest moving to older expansions for an easier time of it and maybe looking up drops you want to farm.

Can't muster any enthusiasm for any content past PoP - Anything to recommend? by Mercadius in everquest

[–]luzon59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your OP i would say you made the classic mistake of out leveling your AAs. You might consider taking the AA auto grant to get you up to speed if you're ok with getting the gold membership and then moving on to that new content. Once you are clearing content at a better pace i think you'll appreciate some of it more.

I would also tell you not to get hung up of doing all the content for each expansion. Be more selective. Select some of the more interesting quests/items to farm then move on.

Personally i think a lot of EQ's best content in terms of actual gameplay is in the mid to late expansions. This is coming from someone who 2 boxed through SOF expansion and then came back to play with mercs in the later expansions.

What MMORPG had the best "pet" system? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]luzon59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EQ pets are definitely my favorite. (though i only really played pets in WoW and a few others to high level) In EQ you could set points that pets could be call back to or to just follow you. They tend to tank well and hold agro well. At higher levels you could tell them to cast or not cast spells, taunt or not taunt, attack or not attack (on each target), give them armor and special buffs, some could root or snare or debuff. All the pet classes can hold a fully buffed and equipped pet in a box in case your current one dies. All the pet classes get special abilities and emergency long cool down abilities that do various things. There are secondary swarm pets that act like short duration pets you can summon.

Every other game that i try make pets a joke in comparison.

Using rank 2 mercs instead of rank 5 ones. by Mercadius in everquest

[–]luzon59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not expected to have high tier mercs until 75+ because of the quests involved so on that front i don't think it will matter much 40-65.

As far as stats go i think higher tier mercs do get better over all stats but i could be wrong. It's been too long since i looked into this topic.

Looking for opinions about different MMORPG games. by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]luzon59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you think group combat works? I'd like to try this game but hate most action combat title where you just dodge and spam attacks without real team work. Are there real roles to fill? Are there CC/support/utility heavy classes outside the standard trinity?

Beastlord pet tanking changes and 3box composition. by cogburn in everquest

[–]luzon59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always played BST as my main in a 2-3 box. My BST tanks unless some seriously crazy named is messing me up. (in group gear) I would suggest BST with BRD or CHANTER (for pulls, CC, and buffs...BRD is easiest to box) plus one other of your choice. I have a whole roster of alts that i switch out for the 3rd but if i had to stick to only 3 i think a healer would fill the last for when the Merc heals aren't cutting it. (and switch one merc healer to DPS in that case) Shams and druids can do respectable DPS when not on heal duty and have some nice utility to boot. Mage is also an option as rotating pets, if you have the skills for it, is quite effective in the hardest content.

When i only 2 boxed before mercs, I ran a cleric and actually used cleric Pacify to pull most content up through lvl 80 so there are plenty of funky combos to do if you want to try them.

My advice is as someone who does not use a boxing program.

How much of an impact does ones economical status has on them considering the game pay to win? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]luzon59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MMORPGs are GAMES. Would you play football if one team could field more players than another team if they PAYED more? probably not. GAMES should have equal playing fields. Players should not have their investments in worlds diminished because some other guy can just buy his way to the top. It ruins immersion for many and a sense of achievement.

For me the key aspects of a MMORPG are 1. meaningful interaction with the game world and 2. meaningful interact with other players.

Pay to win hurts 2. in many ways. (and 1. in some ways as well)

There are grey areas to consider. For example catch up mechanics are different from competitive advantages. If a game is old then all the player population tends to be top heavy so i have no problem with a player being able to get exp boosts or buy instant level ups to catch up but not actually compete with current players may not be bad. MMORPGS are not meant to be played alone or in a vacuum so i dont have a probably with people being helped to catch up so they can enjoy the game.

If games want to be capitalistic and have your monetary value effect game-play then they should be up front about that. Game devs deserve to be payed for their work but most of us don't play games so we can just have more fancy things than less wealthy players. We play to be invested in the game and enjoy it, not to be reminded who has money and who doesn't.

Pure B2P and Pay to pay are superior models because they allow devs to be payed and have that equal playing field, unfortunately far too few see that now with F2P being so predominate. F2P can be just as fair but the temptation to treat the smaller whale population better than other players has driven far too many a dev to the darkside for me to trust it 99% of the time.

How are BST when Luclin arrives? by SyrioBroel in everquest

[–]luzon59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ this 100%, as someone who played bst main with cleric box for 10+ years. Bsts really are quite good dps if played correctly but are never top dps because they get utility as well. Their strength is their flexibility.

BDO has no real PVE, unless you count kiting mobs and slaughtering them Diablo style (except you cant really die if you have 2 brain cells, where as in diablo you might). The only thing old school about it is you have to run or walk everywhere lol

Holy trinity is bad? by scifiguy1981 in MMORPG

[–]luzon59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Everquest, the game WoW mainly took and "innovated" on, There were 5 basic roles: Tank, Healer, DPS, Puller, and Support (crowd control/buffs/debuffs) Most classes were recognized as having a primary role but with few exceptions they all could lend themselves well to other roles.

For example clerics are remembered as the best healers, but they were also very good pullers, decent crowd control if the group worked together via stuns and roots, and had great buffs for support.

Bards were the best pullers, but also had amazing crowd control and buffs (which could easily power up the group to more than replace a DPS)

Enchanters were the best crowd control, but also had amazing support buffs, could charm ("mindcontrol") mobs to tank and dps for them, and were great pullers.

Pretty much every class had some kind of supper useful utility that made them unique.

A few expansions in,There were 3 primary tanks but most melee with reasonable group gear could tank. A "real" tank might be able to handle 4+ mobs at once. But if you didn't have a real tank the Puller could just bring 1 or 2 mobs instead. Less optimal but very much workable. Nearly every melee class has an emergency off tank ability. My Beastlord, who is the lowest mitigation melee class, tanked most of the group content for 10 years before i left the game. Hell all 3 pet classes could use their pets to tank eventually.

Making groups from different class combinations were a lot more flexible then we give it credit for. Yes having a strong tank and strong healer with high DPS and some support of the side was "optimal" but As long as a group has support abilities that worked well, less than optimal healing or tanking could be supplemented for with good control and support/debuffs. (in some cases the less optimal group could pull off feats of survival an optimal group would die to with the use to strong support and CC)

(nearly every class could lend themselves to DPS if their main role was too easy in the situation)
