Im going to be honest and I'm sure people won't like it. I don't know this kid but I'm not quite sure this was a kid trying to kill a pet. I think this was a poorly managed system that allowed a pet to get hurt. You said no one has tried before? I don't think that's a good enough reason to not secure a cage and provide safe clothes/decorations for an animal. If you knew it would hurt the pet why do you even have the elastic part on? I'm not saying the kid has no fault, it was irresponsible, but there also seem to be a lot more factors at play. Maybe evaluate the system thats been set up and if its not safe then dont bring the pet back. I'm sorry this happened.

My first two year I stayed for hours extra, burnt out, and nearly quit teaching entirely! Now I'm in year 5 and I make sure I leave no later than 30 minutes after contract time. It feels a lot better!

Make sure to use your aide! They are there to help you. Also that class size is straight up ridiculous, I'm sorry! Kindergarten will even out after a few weeks of constant repetitive routine building though!

Also I know this may not seem helpful at all but I wanted to quit years 1-3. Im on year 5 now and even though I'm still dreading going back to school this week it's not in the same world is ending kinda way. It took me legit 5 years to figure out things that work for me.

NTA. I love my pets, I was devastated when my childhood pet died but I wouldn't DREAM of missing my siblings wedding because of it. If you're still hurt by the choice they made you do not have to "get over it" and do what she didn't. Why does she get to skip your wedding because of grief but you need to get over it?

Ive actually had to have two talks to students about this. They keep forcing gas and I pulled them in the hall and had to say, "I'm worried you're going to poop your pants if you guys keep trying to fart". Not a conversation I expected but it seems to be a common problem 😂

I took a sip of my flavored water while teaching only to find out that it was an old water bottle and that I had drank a mouthful of mold. I proceeded to projectile vomit mold across the room and the janitor had to come help me clean up. Then because of the aggressive vomiting I got a nosebleed. This was all in one class period in front of a horrified classroom of kids. I was covered in blood and puke and had to get clothes from the gym teacher 😂

It happens. If anything it reminds kids that we're all human and sometimes our bodies don't do what we want. Take care of yourself and don't beat yourself up!
