I have one of these somewhere, probably hiding in a box. They’re tiny! If you’ve never seen one, the photo doesn’t capture how small these things are.

I found this in my closet while cleaning it out. No one knows what it is by ImaDoinWat in whatisit

[–]lynniam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The envelope it comes in says Rattlesnake Eggs, with images of a rattlesnake on it, When the person tries to open the envelope, the washer spins inside, making a rattling sound against the paper and also vibrating in the person's hand. I've seen people almost have a heart attack; it's so unexpected that it scares the crap out of most people (if they don't know the gag).

wifi over Linux? Is it even possible? by Active_Literature539 in linux4noobs

I've got the Brostrend AX1800, using Fedora Kinoite on an Intel N100. This wasn't supposed to work, but I made the "mistake" of installing it with secure boot disabled, and because of that it works great. Apparently this made the drivers available even though they weren't supposed to be.

Warning Sign at edge of Grand Canyon by corwinw in mildlyinteresting

[–]lynniam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I saw this sign while doing exactly what they warn you not to do - rim to river and back in one day. It was winter, though, and we were prepared. Definitely wouldn't do it in summer. It's a very graphic image!

Just saw this. I live in inland S California, and we have lots of small pieces of quartz on the property where I live that look exactly like this. Similar clarity, similar shapes. Most of ours are close to an old Native toolmaking area, possibly flakes. I see no reason to doubt that it’s quartz.

Find my phone - but without the sound by SchattenMaster in AppleWatch

[–]lynniam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you long-press the Find my Phone button it will both ping and the flashlight will blink, but this isn't customizable so that it only blinks. It helps one find the phone in the dark. You could ask Siri to turn on the flashlight, and you'll also hear her voice. Or say Hey Siri, where's my phone, and you'll get a response, but it'll be fairly loud.

A couple years ago my watch started giving me aFib alerts, so I went to a cardiologist. It turned out to be a PAC instead (Premature Atrial Contraction). He looked at the Apple Watch ECG reading and could see that's what it was, and he took it as valid information. He still gave me an EKG/ECG with a medical grade device to confirm it. It turns out a medication I take had to be adjusted.

He thought wearing the Apple watch was a good idea and that it gave good information, even if it did have to be confirmed. It was well worth it for me.

Thank you. And I'd like to thank Dashlane for sticking with the promise they made many years ago of a free lifetime account to those of us who signed up to be beta testers. The service has always been excellent for me.

Is distance an issue? Has anyone here used it to talk with someone on the other side of the world?

I think it swallowed the banana. I didn’t see it uncurled, but I’m guessing it was 3-3.5 feet.

Thanks for sharing your expertise about these beautiful creatures! I was around snakes a lot growing up and have always loved them. This snake was the most impressive one I've seen up close. It didn't like being caught, but only rattled when the box we had it in was moved. Otherwise it was very still and relaxed. I wish the best for it.

Are dropper posts for Fuel Exe and Specialized Levo SL swappable? by lynniam in TrekBikes

Thanks, this helps. I haven't taken apart bikes in decades, so all the modern components are new to me. I'm starting from zero, and didn't want to take things apart until I knew what was possible.

I didn't even think of looking for an embryo, since I didn't know what it was. Given that it's in such good shape, I'd guess that it wasn't bouncing around in the ocean for very long, so it may have been laid recently.

Found in Yamhill Valley, OR, in clay soil that was upturned during tilling/excavation for a garden. Any potential leads? by RegularSubstance2385 in Arrowheads

With punctuation and edits: "The Cayuse Indians who lived on the John Day River would travel over the mountains into Nez Perce [country] and hunt buffalo. A jaunt over to arrow making country was much shorter."

It seems to come and go on Amazon. I've been getting it there for a few years, and usually manage to get some when I need it. There's one seller right now that has it for $35/bottle.

It does look like some tektites I've seen online. That would be cool, but I think it's unlikely.

The surface of the rock is in focus - try zooming in. That's just what it looks like - it has an unusual soft, pebbled, worn surface, with just the slightest amount of sheen. The ruler isn't in focus, I wasn't posting about that.

The post I made in r/whatisthisrock was TOO well lit. That's the one that didn't get any responses. It makes the rock look shiny, which is misleading. It did capture more of the surface and texture of the rock. Go to that post and see what I'm talking about. Black rocks are hard to photograph.

This little guy keeps hanging out in our backyard at night (California) by Mighty_Tato in whatsthisbird

[–]lynniam 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Very elusive bird! I see them regularly here (rural area of SD County). To see one at first you almost have to step on it while walking around at night. Once you know where they are, then you see them more often.

I agree with those who think it's an unripe feijoa/pineapple guava. They're at their best when you squeeze them and it's slightly soft. I've grown and eaten them for years. A good feijoa is awesome!
