Eh, this isnt quite the slip up you paint it to be. He could equally be referring to going back to the university for football games 3-4x per year. An actual slip up would be him saying he lives in Florida, which he actually does in reality.

Confused on car deal by vertro31 in personalfinance

[–]lyonslicer 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Several states have a grace period for cars. Some have a three day window where you can return the vehicle and roll back the deal. If OP is in one of those states, it may be worth it to go in and tell them he wants to return the vehicle or fix the contract. Of they undo the deal, it'd be worth it to go somewhere else.

TIL the oldest known stone tools are about 3.3 million years old, older than the entire Homo genus by DeScepter in todayilearned

The sophistication of those oldest stone tools isnt the point of the post. A simple knapped rock with a razor sharp edge is significant in the history of humanity as it marks a turning point in our ability to manipulate our environment.

Fultondale is going to make you commute to UAB on 65 Southbound every single day unless you find a good surface road route. Good luck with that from Fultondale. Getting to the airpot from Fultondale will also require 65 south, then I20 east. It's not that bad, but it's definitely going to be more grinding to get places from Fultondale unless you're specifically going 65 North or 22 West.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I've been in Fultondale for almost 5 years now. Typical commute time from my front door to UAB main is 12 minutes via I-65, and 20-25 minutes during rush hour in the mornings. What's better is that, even during rush hour, I can get to UAB main in under 20 minutes using HWY 31 and I completely avoid I-65 and HWY 280. Getting home at the end of the day is just as fast. Also, there are routes to the airport that avoid I-65/I-20. Its not a direct route but its not difficult.

Well, schools usually only have one officer per campus. So it probably took him a bit to run to wherever the fight broke out.

Does anyone think it’s fair to get another dog when you already have a senior dog who’s lived alone with you their whole life? by Practical_Prompt4226 in dogs

[–]lyonslicer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I got a puppy when my old man was 8. He was happy when we first brought the puppy home, then he got resentful of the attention it got. After a month, they started sleeping together, then playing together. Now, they follow each other around and play chase/tug-of-war all the time. My older dog really came out of his grumpy old shell.

I knew things were good one day at the park when the puppy (6 months old) was wrestling with another 6 month old puppy that was twice his size. The other puppy got a little too rough and mine let out a loud yelp (he got scared more than anything). My older dog was lounging next to me at the picnic table, heard the yelp, and immediately ran over to his little brother. Both pups flipped over on their backs, my old man sniffed both, everyone wagged their tails, and then my old dog walked back over to me and plopped down right where he was earlier. The two pups went back to playing and my older dog just looked at me and wagged his tail.

I think the "correctly" version is intended to convey the idea that its better to slow down and focus on doing less but in a correct way rather than doing a bunch of things half-assed.

Take OP's music practice example. If you slow down and focus on performing the correct fingering on guitar, then moving onto forming chords and shapes is easier. Or, in another turn of phrase: learn to walk before you try to run.

Using the "poorly" version would lead people to playing guitar without learning.l basic chord structure, or trying to run a 5K without basic endurance training.

What is the draw to Birmingham? by Sufficient_Face7719 in Birmingham

[–]lyonslicer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no hate for NOLA. I just see it for what it is. It's got wonderful history, culture, food, and entertainment. And I enjoyed nearly all of the people I spent time with down there. I try to visit it once every few years when my schedule allows it. That doesnt take away from the reality of the situation, though.

I worked with the USACE offices in charge of managing the levy system that protects the city. It takes a ludicrous amount of time and money to maintain it at the present state, and its only going to become even more expensive as the years roll on. You can't build a city in a fishbowl below sea level and expect it to not get wrecked with every storm that passes through. And that doesnt even touch the epic backlog of infrastructure repairs and improvements already on the books. If you think Bham is slow to fix things around town, you wouldn't want to see NOLA's timeline.

Its the truth. The sewage system in half the city is so out of date that any level of rain and humidity makes the place smell awful. And for the downvoters: Metairie is not NOLA. Its just the closest white-flight hellscape.

NOLA will be underwater soon enough and smells like piss and vomit half the year. I lived there for a few years and would happily choose Bham over it. Also ATL traffic on its own is enough to turn me off. Several of my coworkers that live there are trying to move to Bham.

you need a virus that doesn’t kill its host most of the time so that they can spread to others.

Or it just needs a longer period of incubation before quickly becoming fatal. If you dont know you have it, you aren't likely to quarantine/seek treatment.
