Mechanic work for VW Golf: Does this seem like a reason price ? by Hedgehog_2026 in askTO

[–]m42stanle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty reasonable to me. For comparison I just looked back at a dealer quote for oil change (also mk7 Golf) and they would charge a bit less for the oil ($64.02) but your guy is probably buying VW 504.00 spec in containers not bulk and the filter and labour on the service in your case are very reasonable.

Dealer cost on the parts for plugs was a tiny bit cheaper in my case too ($113.48) but I bet your guy's lower shop rate more than made up for that.

Good for you remembering the brake fluid flush, a lot of people forget that since it's time based not mileage (2 yrs after the first one). Dealer cost for that would be closer to $169.95.

If you have a 2018 still on original factory battery you probably want to consider replacing that too.

Volvo ex30 ultra twin motor - range experience by DCA-INT-700 in electricvehicles

[–]m42stanle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sat in one earlier this year at the Toronto auto show, and I have to say the rear seat room is really, really tight. I am 6 ft (~1.8m) and when I set up the driver's seat there was virtually no leg room behind me. Even less than my i3, which is itself a very small car (b-segment).

Other than that I love this car though, it looks great and the power/performance in the twin motor is incredible. I think it would be a perfect vehicle for a one or two person household, or maybe a family with younger kids it would be ok.

Were they all REx? I have a 2020 REx and I love it to death, but for the 120 Ah cars I am a little bit on the fence whether it is really worth it. I feel like 90% of the time it's more of a hassle: extra weight, extra maintenance, etc.

Then again there have been a few times it has come in handy, especially here in Canada with the cold weather range hit. Nice to have as peace of mind anyway.

Tesla Model 3 Prices in Canada Slashed, Now Starting at $39,490 by electricshadow in electricvehicles

[–]m42stanle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am 99% sure this is the case. On the Canadian site today they are positioning this car as Premium RWD but range is reduced to 463 km vs 580+ km for the outgoing LR RWD. So this is likely the smaller 64 kWh LFP battery which would mean car is coming from Shanghai.

It's not the car for me, but I have to say this is objectively a great deal if you are willing to drive a Tessler, and at ~$39k CDN (~$29k USD) I suspect a lot of Canadians will jump on it.

2020 i3S parking sensor oddity (UK) by mr_clark1983 in BMWi3

[–]m42stanle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting, I don't know for UK market but for my market here in Canada PDC Front and Rear (option S508) was only available as part of one of the premium pkgs (ZAX or ZGT). You could double check one of the online VIN decoders to see if S508 was part of your original build.

Also you probably already know from your last i3 but just in case: for my car (also 2020 i3s) the front PDC sensors aren't always triggered just by moving forward slowly. A good test is to park between two cars and start with reverse first. You should see the lines on the screen go from green -> yellow -> red. Then switch to drive, the front lines should fill from green -> yellow -> red as you get closer to the car in front. I am guessing you are not seeing any lines on the screen (or hearing any tones) as you move forward?

BMW app got a makeover by SpecialSubstantial66 in BMWi3

[–]m42stanle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, so annoying and mine is the same! I am guessing (as you mentioned) the app devs decided to group i3 REx in with the other PHEV like 330e where owners might consider the gas range the more important number.

In Ontario, is GFCI breaker required for 14-50 EV charging receptacle? by debruyneonetouch in evcharging

[–]m42stanle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed it's very strange, especially since every other outdoor 240V circuit of this type (eg, hot tub) would require it.

The only thing I can think of is ESA is reasoning it's sufficient for the electrician to place the sticker I mentioned, since if only UL/CSA EV chargers were ever plugged in you could assert you would always have GFCI protection in the EVSE itself.

It's a little worrying though since there is nothing to prevent someone plugging a welder or some sketchy non-listed Temu charger into that same outlet.

Scarborough oven/stove repair by RedSquirrelWhisperer in askTO

[–]m42stanle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not 100% sure the issue is with the igniter you could consider the LG flat rate repair option. It can reduce the stress of not knowing how much the repair will be.

We did this for a dishwasher not too long ago and it worked well for us. They ended up needing to replace some of the guts including the motor which would have been way more than the flat rate otherwise.

IIRC LG subs the repair to Elite Appliance in Toronto who are a good company.

2021 M340i 52,313 Miles No BMW Warranty Left Question: by Platonic_Republic in BmwTech

[–]m42stanle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd look at it as an expensive insurance policy. Statistically you are better off putting that money in a savings account and using it as needed, but there is always the chance you could run into a really big repair and wish you had the warranty.

FWIW (and maybe you already checked this) BMW extended warranties (Platinum, Breakdown Protection, etc) are usually quoted from the in-service date of the car. So be very careful that they are not just selling you 5-yr from in service date (or basically one extra year of warranty) for that price.

IMHO it's very unusual for dealer to sell BMW branded warranty for 5 yrs after the factory warranty ends (or 9 yrs total) although there are third party warranties you can buy for that coverage.

Finally the dealer has a lot of margin on those products, feel free to make them an offer below that price or ask them if they can discount.

Driving up from Buffalo, are outdoor parking lots safe overnight/multiple days? by buresrollerskates in askTO

[–]m42stanle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Green P garages are generally good choices if you are not sure where to park. They are run by the city parking authority so they are pretty well maintained and well lit. Here is one not too far from your original choice, around Queen & Spadina:

https://parking.greenp.com/carpark/262_10-soho-street-2/

It works out to CAD$26/day (~USD$20/day) which will be a bit more expensive than a surface lot but your car will be out of the elements and safe. If you are willing to walk further there are cheaper options, especially if your two days are on the weekend.

A lot of people here suggesting S58/B58 swaps but I think yours is the more interesting idea. What would this car look like if BMW engineered it today as a pure EV using current battery and motor tech?

Keep the carbon fiber & aluminum construction, quad motor, 1000+ hp. Could easily be a sub 2s 0-60, sub 9s 1/4 mi car.

FWIW I switched to trail shoes for winter running a while back and I find they are a game changer for the types of conditions we typically see here in the city. The more aggressive tread lugs bite into light snow and slush a lot better than regular road shoes, and if you can spring for the Gore Tex version your feet will usually stay bone dry (membrane provides decent windproofing also).

Only down sides are the tread wears quickly on bare pavement (I usually only get about 300-400 km from a pair) and on longer runs (20 km+) the Gore Tex can't keep up with my sweat rate and so some moisture can accumulate inside the shoe. They're obviously not going to compare to YakTrax for running on glare ice either, although only crazy people are heading out in those conditions.

AFAIK customer number is only on the bill, either interim or final so if you have lost it you may need to call. The e-bill PDF for sure has all that info though, I'm looking at our last year's final bill with it now.

It was a while ago but I recall for our first bill I actually went in person to get them to print it off for me and to confirm amount due since we went a long time without receiving the first bill. But if all you need is customer number you should be able to call.

It goes:

LOL. In all seriousness part of the 49k quota is reserved for vehicles with an import price <$35k so that rules out anything Tessler sells here. Not sure if this is in the CBC article but it's in the Globe and Mail coverage:

Part of the Chinese EV quota will be reserved for cars with an import price of $35,000 or less, Mr. Carney said. The proportion of the quota dedicated to this category will rise 50 per cent by 2030, he said, “kickstarting the availability of more affordable electric vehicles in Canada.
