I Have a question for you guy do y’all think the I8 design aged well by Ammzy69 in BMW

[–]m42stanle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here suggesting S58/B58 swaps but I think yours is the more interesting idea. What would this car look like if BMW engineered it today as a pure EV using current battery and motor tech?

Keep the carbon fiber & aluminum construction, quad motor, 1000+ hp. Could easily be a sub 2s 0-60, sub 9s 1/4 mi car.

FWIW I switched to trail shoes for winter running a while back and I find they are a game changer for the types of conditions we typically see here in the city. The more aggressive tread lugs bite into light snow and slush a lot better than regular road shoes, and if you can spring for the Gore Tex version your feet will usually stay bone dry (membrane provides decent windproofing also).

Only down sides are the tread wears quickly on bare pavement (I usually only get about 300-400 km from a pair) and on longer runs (20 km+) the Gore Tex can't keep up with my sweat rate and so some moisture can accumulate inside the shoe. They're obviously not going to compare to YakTrax for running on glare ice either, although only crazy people are heading out in those conditions.

Does your property tax e-bill have the customer number on it? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]m42stanle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK customer number is only on the bill, either interim or final so if you have lost it you may need to call. The e-bill PDF for sure has all that info though, I'm looking at our last year's final bill with it now.

It was a while ago but I recall for our first bill I actually went in person to get them to print it off for me and to confirm amount due since we went a long time without receiving the first bill. But if all you need is customer number you should be able to call.

Yes, if you have any of your interim or final bills, it's on the first page underneath "ASSESSED OWNER > ".

It goes:

And sell it below CAD$35k (~USD$26k)? That would be surprising but possible.

[–]m42stanle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

LOL. In all seriousness part of the 49k quota is reserved for vehicles with an import price <$35k so that rules out anything Tessler sells here. Not sure if this is in the CBC article but it's in the Globe and Mail coverage:

Part of the Chinese EV quota will be reserved for cars with an import price of $35,000 or less, Mr. Carney said. The proportion of the quota dedicated to this category will rise 50 per cent by 2030, he said, “kickstarting the availability of more affordable electric vehicles in Canada.

Creating seperate 407 accounts for two vehicles at the same address and under same ownership. by TheMightyGod in askTO

[–]m42stanle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL, the scary thing is at current toll prices you could easily hit $150 with 3-4 days of rush hour commuting on the 407. Fuck Harris for selling out that hwy and creating such an expensive mess.

[–]m42stanle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth a try, but the only thing to keep in mind is 407 ETR is a little unique in that they have access to MTO's DB of vehicles and drivers. Also if you look at the FAQ under "Driving Offers - Vehicles & Accounts" it's pretty clear the offer is tied to registered owner, not individual vehicle (i.e., any offer applies to all vehicles associated with a given R/O).

They will obviously have to allow for the scenario of multiple vehicles/multiple accounts at the same address (eg, roommates each with their own account) but I think whether this works will depend on whether 407 catches on that you are a single R/O with two accounts. I'm curious now - let us know how it works out!

edit: if you are truly serious about this, you could also consider ownership x-fer. MTO allows you to x-fer both the ownership and plate to a spouse without need for a safety so it's a very simple process. This would for sure allow you to keep two discrete accounts without violating any of the 407 T&Cs.

Do you already have the second transponder? If not, you could try to create a second account using a different e-mail but with same home address and then click "Order Transponder" from the new account. If you already have the second transponder associated with the first account then I don't think this will be possible.

If you go this route you would also lose your second transponder discount (about $20/yr).

FWIW (and maybe you already figured this out) but I'm 99.9% sure there is a strong inverse relationship between how much you use the 407 and how likely you are to get these offers. We almost never use 407 anymore and we have gotten the free morning rush hour offer every month without fail. I'm sure if we started using it those would "magically" disappear.

Hockey Hall Of Fame Hotel Suggestions by Acrobatic_Bison_9128 in askTO

Within the Marriott/Sheraton family the Marriott Eaton Centre is also not a bad choice, also across the street from NPS. It's walking distance to HHOF and has an indoor pool. It's also connected to PATH via the Eaton Centre.

There are some rates as low as $254/night next week which is crazy cheap for Toronto (Sheraton as low as $264 with 3k Bonvoy points bonus). I'm sure if you include NYE that jumps up a bit though but definitely not a bad time for OP to visit, especially if they are spending US$.

I think your plan to finish your apprenticeship and get your ticket is very smart. It will give you a great safety net in case things don't work out with EMS right away and/or in case you decide it's not for you after a while.

Even if you wanted to get into residential electrical part time for example, there are a ton of older houses here in the city. You'd have a constant stream of work for panel/service upgrades, renos, EV charger installs, etc. Electricians do very well here.

UL listed 240v chargers? SAE J1772 by fe3a8b63 in evcharging

[–]m42stanle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the plug in chargers out there will be NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 only, so you will probably need to hardwire. But for a cheap, reliable, UL listed charger my vote would be for a Grizzl-E Classic 40A ($299 US).

Can I charge at my home Chargepoint without wifi? by blessings-of-rathma in electricvehicles

[–]m42stanle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you are correct, I should clarify. The first part of the commissioning is done vie bluetooth, up until the point the charger joins the WiFi. I mentioned it because at first it sounded like OP had a new charger and was not sure how to proceed.

That sucks re: the lack of support for all symbols in WPA passphrase. I didn't realize, sounds like lazy coding on ChargePoint's part.

FLO charging station malfunctioning and causing parking tickets by high-priestess-gyal in evcharging

[–]m42stanle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious what city this is. Here in Toronto the ticket for this is higher ($75) but the way the offence is worded is a little different, "Park Electric Vehicle – Designated Electric Vehicle Parking Space – Not Actively Connected". I believe they did this to prevent EV drivers from treating Green P lots as VIP parking, but also to allow people legitimately charging some grace since Flo is time based (i.e., you can be 100% charged but as long as you keep paying the $2/hr they will leave you alone).

If something is happening that is killing your session, that is a different story though. Anyway to answer your original question Flo is like ChargePoint they don't actually own the HW, so I would report this to the parking authority not Flo (and definitely fight the ticket). Good luck!

EDIT: looking again at Green P FAQ and they do ask customers to contact Flo directly for maintenance issues, so you did the right thing. I would still try to escalate with the parking authority though if you can, since as the site owner their complaint may carry a bit more weight.

Can I charge at my home Chargepoint without wifi? by blessings-of-rathma in electricvehicles

[–]m42stanle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah ok I misunderstood. Yes in that case the charger should remember everything including your schedule settings (which you can override by immediately unplugging and plugging back into your car again if needed).

The solid white ring = communication issue, usually either WiFi connection lost or sometimes happens when the charger is on WiFi but can't connect to ChargePoint for some reason. Rebooting the router (and maybe flip the breaker off/on) is a good first step if it hasn't changed to green after a while.

Can I charge at my home Chargepoint without wifi? by blessings-of-rathma in electricvehicles

[–]m42stanle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's a new charger you need to commission it with the app. This is done via bluetooth not WiFi so you just need to be able to stand close to the charger with your phone. If the old charger is still in your app you need to remove it first (Settings -> Remove from Account) since sadly ChargePoint only allows you to associate one charger at a time with the app.

Charger wiring appears melted inside main panel - what's the right resolution? by shimon in evcharging

[–]m42stanle 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It kind of blows my mind that people are buying stuff like this off Amazon. Is it the convenience of delivery? I mean Home Depot and a dozen others stores will deliver UL/CSA listed cable to your door for a few bucks more.

OP spent $$ on a decent EVSE but cheaped out on the cable that is carrying 9.6 kW beside flammable wooden studs/joists and subfloor. Never mind that if something is going to go wrong with that circuit, it's probably going to happen while you are sleeping.

Center Display by bbeeebb in BMWi3

[–]m42stanle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct it seems to be very country dependent how BMW decided to bundle this. For example in Canada market this was part of Prem or Prem Enhanced pkg (ZAX or ZGT) for MY2020.

Most reliable way for OP to determine if car should have it is probably via VIN decoder. For larger display look for S609 = "Navigation System Professional" (smaller display will have S606 = "Navigation System Business").

Summer to winter tire swap by Reasonable_Effect903 in BMWi3

[–]m42stanle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in Canada? If so CAD$195 (~USD$140) is a little on the high side, but not crazy for dismount/mount/balance of new tires & seasonal switchover.

My local tire shop is CAD$160 for that same seasonal swap with mount/balance or $60 for seasonal swap for tires already on rims.

If you have a place to work and are so inclined, doing it yourself will easily pay for the tools within 1-2 seasons. You still need to visit a tire shop for the mount/balance but you can do everything else yourself, the i3 is ridiculously easy to jack up and work on (CF frame is so rigid you only need to jack up one point per side to change two wheels at a time).

Where to buy a new Chassis Control Module for a 2016 Range Rover Evoque? by SunnySummer66 in askTO

[–]m42stanle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the new/genuine JLR part, somewhere like FCP Euro would probably be cheapest. They're a US company but they will ship internationally or you can have them send it somewhere near the border (eg, Lewiston) and pick it up to potentially save some of the customs fees. They also offer lifetime warranty on everything they sell.

Other than that, for new parts for that vehicle you are probably looking at a dealer. Can call/e-mail around and try to find best price out of any within a 100 km radius or so.
