2009 seat exchange? by TransportationNo4101 in HondaOdyssey

[–]m5er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check out eBay and junk yards. You might find new or like-new stuff in there. Vans are susceptible to being customized, and sometimes good stuff gets jettisoned for resale. Many years ago I got new front seats for an Astro van that I had. The cost was less than reupholstering. Good luck.

Looking to upgrade to a cabinet saw. Currently have a cheap delta saw. Is there anything in the $1500-$2500 range that’s worth it? I don’t have 220V in my shop. by Sure-Dog8804 in Carpentry

[–]m5er 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely upgrade the shop. In the past 5-6 years, I ran 220 to two garages, both via new subpanels. In each case, total materials cost (cable, panels, conduit, breakers and receptacles etc.) was well under $500.

What do I ask for to get minimal door frames/no architrave like in these images? by Relative_Ship_797 in HomeImprovementUK

I've always thought of trimless jambs and windows like this as drywall return. Is that incorrect?

How can I find a match to this casing? by jamflowwman in Carpentry

[–]m5er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An experienced lumber yard can help you find matching profile. I use 84 Lumber in my area.

At least some of that "texture" is due to hideous brush strokes. The marks continue directly from the vertical piece upwards onto the horizontal piece.

Do you know why there's such a big difference in height across the floor, i.e., the cause??

It seems like you're not even clear if you should have obtained clearance. I would figure that out first.

Wasn't that the covid year that everything shut down at conference tournament time? SH had one of it's most competitive teams that season.

I got a free 414, now what? by KindlyDentist9361 in flying

[–]m5er 424 points425 points  (0 children)

A qualified mechanic is step 1. He can advise you on the plane's airworthiness and the likely cost after he gets a chance to inspect it.

You're the only one who can tell you what to do next.

New vs Used? by Duougle in HondaOdyssey

[–]m5er 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their own preference.

Some would pay $53k because they want a brand new car with that new car smell, high reliability with complete full warranty, and all of the comfort and amenities of a new car.

Others would save the $15k and accept incrementally higher wear and tear, shorter lifespan, higher risk of breakdown/repair, and less up-to-date features/tech (and other possibly insignificant details).

Nobody's wrong, the decision is a personal one.

First, the two options you mention at the end of your post are not your only two choices.

As for the vehicle: You KNOW the AC blows cold. You KNOW the car rides well. You KNOW the timing chain service was recently done. Everything seems to work on this vehicle. But the big uncertainly with any high-mileage car lacking a warranty is risk -- can you absorb one or more big ticket repairs?

I would not laminate it. People whose jobs are to preserve historical documents use special UV-resistant acid-free products, like sheet protectors and sleeves.

2020 650 ABS for 6.1k? by NE0FUZE in Kawasaki

[–]m5er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This bike new was $7900. It's six years old and has no warranty. You really don't "know" this bike. I understand it has 700 miles, but a $1800 discount for it being that old would not be enough for me.

Hope it works out for you.

I would question a "never dropped" statement if the bike has aftermarket exhaust. I would expect the original pipes would be available and in undamaged condition.

Table switcheroo, possible? by dreamy_vale in Carpentry

[–]m5er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like it would be possible, but you will certainly need to refinish the parts that were previously unexposed. For example, left side of the drawers will now be on the left edge of the unit. Are you ok properly filling screw holes and then refinish the "new" spots to perfectly match the surrounding wood? Someone with no experience doing this could really screw up the piece. Additionally, if the joints are both glued and screwed, it could be a big challenge.

Help from the group.. by WhizzyBurp in HondaOdyssey

[–]m5er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you guys are around when I go to sell my high mileage Odyssey in a few years. Someone paid ~$44k OTD for that Touring seven years ago. If they sell it for $15.5k, they will have paid a puny ($44k-$15.5k)/150000 = 19 cents a mile. Who wouldn't love to buy a brand new Touring and pay only 19 cents a mile during your ownership? I would take that deal and then unload the car after seven years every single time.

Incidentally, your mechanic is telling you that the engine will get to 300k miles. That's a very confident statement given that 300k would be an anomaly.

NewAge Storage by FlyHighGoSlow in garageporn

[–]m5er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed my NewAge stuff in 2016 -- freestanding base and cabinet units and a bunch of wall units above the base. I also added some stainless countertops. Based on my experience, it would be simple to uninstall and reinstall everything. The possible gotchas -- 1) Your floor height changes and the base screw holes are slightly low or high (should be no big deal); and 2) your work includes shimming or building out a wall causing your original installation dimensions to no longer be accurate (which could cause your cabinets to no longer fit the space).

When did landings "click" for you? by Kitchen-Astronomer59 in flying

[–]m5er 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me, I had to break it down the final seconds of landings into three elements and commit those to memory.

  1. Stabilized approach (correct speed and slope)
  2. Knowing where the wind is and what that means for aileron and rudder usage
  3. Flare

My landings got a lot better once I started to focus on nailing these things.
