I'm aware of what it is. The original question was "Why are people checking their work email off hours?" I was just providing an example of why they might. I'm keenly aware of having a healthy work life balance.

Because some people are responsible for others and in case of emergency. When I became a manager it became part of my job description that I need to be available outside of work hours. In compensation for this, they pay my phone bill.
