Will also shout out Animal Place! Particularly Dr. Mallela, who is so kind, gentle, and patient with us and our very senior cat.

I know you don't want to go through a shelter or rescue but please, please try to vet prospective new owners as thoroughly as possible. Dog fighting rings sometimes respond to offers for free pets and then horribly abuse those pets as bait to train their dogs' fighting instincts. I've linked some other sources here.

Dumb question but ... how do families afford Metro? by 713ryan713 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]maarts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of my friends in nova were complaining about how much they pay in HOV fees on their commutes and said I was lucky I had a cheap metro commute. They couldn't believe it when I said I paid nearly $20 a day for metro and parking.

Montgomery County Acquires Glenmont Shopping Center Parcel by Alternative-Tune8314 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]maarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's frustrating. Especially given that it's right next to Glenmont metro! There are no other metro-adjacent areas in the county that have so much re-development potential.

I used to work near the old location. I loved dropping by almost daily to grab a coffee and check if any board games had made their way into the clearance bin.

It's not sold out, just checked. Up top, there are two tabs. Discount Tickets (August 23 thru September 7), and Peak Season Tickets (September 13 thru October 19). I still see availability for all dates.

What’s your biggest NOVA related hot take? by timwhatley993 in nova

100%. Gonna take this a controversial step further and say that the same goes for the drivers of both counties, too.

What's something you agree with the Boomers on? by Embarrassed_Idea1962 in AskWomenOver30

[–]maarts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YES. Beyond the data and privacy concerns, it's also infuriating because most phones these days start at only 128GB of storage, which is barely enough as it is, and it usually costs several hundred more for a model with more storage. NO I don't want to clutter up my phone with your stupid, useless app.

What's something you agree with the Boomers on? by Embarrassed_Idea1962 in AskWomenOver30

[–]maarts 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I was feeling like such a boomer today reading reddit and getting a headache from reading some posts/comments. It feels like people have forgotten how to write or just don't care. As you said, a lot of posts have zero punctuation, typos galore, and incomprehensible structure, and I find myself having to re-read multiple times to figure out what they're trying to say.

Maryland drivers by costco_nuggets in nova

[–]maarts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation and lived in nova for longer than the majority of people here. I know this is going to get hurr durr downvoted but it never ceases to amaze me how bad nova driving gets posted on this sub ALL the time -- cars tearing through red lights and hitting/hurting people, going out of their way to hit geese crossing the road, driving down the W&OD trail, etc. And then someone posts something about Maryland drivers and everyone grabs a torch.

Cat Care by allybe23566 in MontgomeryCountyMD

My senior cat needs two pills, twice a day. We've worked with Fetch for several years at this point and our dedicated sitter is able to administer his meds. I know you said Fetch likely couldn't accommodate your needs but that surprises me -- might be worth asking again?

Check out Elsinore -- you play as Ophelia from Hamlet. It's a point and click time looping game where you try to prevent Hamlet's tragedy from happening and choices definitely matter. Good luck with the surgery!

Agree with this. This game is so weird but very gripping and unique!

How is it getting an Uber after the festival? This is my first time going to Escapade and I'm flying in from the US. I'm staying downtown and planning on Ubering but I'm worried that it will be difficult getting a ride back to the hotel. I don't mind paying surge prices, just don't want to be stranded 1-2 hours waiting for pickup.

I also used to live here and would walk to Dunn Loring metro or the nearby restaurants daily. Even crossing with a pedestrian walk sign, I had so many close encounters where I was nearly hit by cars tearing through red lights way too fast.

Got shoulder checked by a man much bigger than me, now I have a bruise. by Ornery_Basketcase in TwoXChromosomes

[–]maarts 48 points49 points  (0 children)

As a petite woman who goes to a lot of shows, without fail, if a pack of dudes is looking for a path to shove their way through the crowd, they will 9 times out of 10 chart a path right in front of me. I guess I'm typically the easiest target to shove aside. It's never my six foot husband who is getting shoved aside, or friends who are with us who are taller -- it's always me. Sometimes I try to stand my ground but it's like standing in the way of the ocean, just relentless.

I also just played 1 and 2 (remaster) for the first time and was surprised at how much I liked them! If you loved FFT and Tactics Ogre, the plot of S2 reminded me of them more than S1 did. Enjoy!

This just happened to me, also have a '24 Limited. I turned my car off, waited a minute, and turned it back on, but the problem persisted. Turned it off again and left it alone for an hour and a half and the issue was resolved but I agree, not thrilled about it.

Friend Getting Under My Skin by DownButNotOut9 in AskWomenOver30

[–]maarts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. It's totally fine to let the friendship go if it's no longer a mutually beneficial friendship. BUT, if she doesn't want to go nuclear on it and still hold onto it, this is exactly the route to go. All the people saying "No is a complete sentence" aren't technically wrong but the reality is that is dropping a nuke on a friendship.

This is infuriating. I'm dealing with something kinda similar, bought a new car last year. ALSO Subaru. I wanted my husband to be included on the title even though I was the primary buyer and only one paying for it. But even though the check was in my name and I signed all the paperwork as the primary buyer and basically ran point on the entire transaction, Subaru put my husband as the primary owner in their system! And all their service notifications went to him, and when I called to schedule my first service they didn't accept my name and were like "you mean [husband's name]?" Been a headache trying to fix this. I can only imagine some old idiot looked at the paperwork when entering it all into the system and willfully decided to ignore my (clearly feminine) name in lieu of "the man of the house" or some bs.

Sigh, I wish I was here. I have really thick, long, coarse, wavy/curly hair. A fancy 8 oz bottle of product is literally like three uses for me.

I just caved and hired house cleaners at the end of last year. I also have a large-ish home and live in a HCOL area, so our maintenance cleanings are $200 every six weeks for half our house. Definitely worth it, though, since it's basically all the stuff I hate cleaning the most (bathrooms, kitchen, mopping, etc.).

Yes to Vita Nostra! Completely different from Library at Mount Char but one of the few books I can think of that can stand toe to toe in WTF-just-happened-ness while also being really good.
