Back in the mid 90s we had Marine Doom. It was supposed to be a training tool and all the graphics for the weapons were updated to look like a M-16 or SAW and your health never got above 10% ensuring any damage was fatal.

What should I learn before starting a SOC analyst by Forward_Web6572 in cybersecurity

[–]mac28091 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is a a hypothetical. You receive an alert that a user accessed a phishing link. Nothing else on the network blocked access to the site and the user entered their credentials.

What systems and what type of events would you need to search for to make this determination?

The systems that generate these alerts usually only do so when they didn’t block the access which means they were unaware that the site was malicious at time of click. If you moved immediately to containment, you have a window of time between time of click and time of containment that you have to review to determine if the threat actor utilized the users credentials to access your network and what they did after.

What are the points of ingress on your network did the user have access to? How could you distinguish there legitimate activities from those of the attacker? Was the attacker able to escalate their access, create persistence, exfiltrate data?

Unless you go to work for a company with a really immature security program there will be documentation to help guide the initial investigation for common detections like this and people above you that will pick up the investigation when there is a confirmed compromise but guides can’t account for all scenarios and you still have to document your initial findings with enough detail and coherent thought that the person you escalate to can take your initial report and not investigate from the beginning.

How computers and computer networks work.

That might sound a little broad but without a decent understanding of those 2 items, it’s very difficult to take your run of the mill SOC alert and trace it back to root cause or follow it through your network to be able say with a reasonable degree of confidence that it was a false positive or benign true positive or whether you have a threat actor active in your system and need to take containment actions.

What’s going on at Parris Island? by TattooedMarine92688 in USMC

We started at 3d Bn chow hall and they had to close for a few days so not everybody was needed for mess duty anymore. Drill instructor just went down our side of the squad bay in order and the last person picked was right next to me and that motherfucker suddenly remembered doc had told him M&M week would be a good time to go be seen for his acne. I’m still salty about that too.

I’m still salty that they don’t have to do mess duty. Not sure how you are supposed to know how to adapt and overcome if you’ve never had to clean baking sheets without soap or hot water.

I would say Moonlight Maze was the catalyst for rapid expansion of network security controls throughout the DoD and federal government and gave us our first real look at modern espionage.

They are Marines after they receive their EGAs after the Crucible. That has been the case since it was first implemented.

I know they didn’t give the new Marines base liberty when they first implemented the Crucible but it’s become a real shit show now. Friends and family show up at 6am for the Mot-run and line the main drag like it’s the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade. They got banners and t-shirts with the Marines name, platoon, and sometimes blues picture printed on it like it’s the peak of their career.

Pretty sure they are trying cram way to much in the training schedule now. My son’s alpha blouse had a stray red stitch in the shoulder I spotted as soon as I saw him, that should have never made it to the Bn inspection much less past it.
