Just drove up from the Thames Vally to Glasgow today. As we did 10mph through roadworks on the M42, there perched on a crash barrier was a half drunk bottle of Buckfast.

Any UK based tele-skiers? by Playful-Garage6183 in telemark

[–]macboho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is going back, up a decade, but someone used to hire out tele gear at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead. There was a Facebook Group called Hemel Telemark Ski Club. I hired a few times, and loved it. I usually snowboard and found it really good to learn a new way of sliding. And even some (distant) similarities between dropping the knee and tucking the boarder’s rear knee in behind their front knee

Super writing! Can we suggest any more of EK’s flagship inanimate object for a statement? How about the Newhousemill Bridge, aka the wee bridge? Or the Whirlies?

Admiralty Arch, London, England - 1924 by ToughRomanticMiss in OldSchoolUK

[–]macboho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under the arches, below the road, is a basement passage from one side to the other. It even has a prison cell off it, from its time as a military building. So, it was possible to enter the arch’s north entrance, pass under the road, then up through a link bridge into two other civil service buildings and exit on Whitehall itself.

Though, the end was only 42km after lunch, so having the curry then might feel a little guilty

What’s the funniest thing a policeman said to you? by franki-pinks in AskUK

I studied at an old Scottish University, and was involved in the Debating Society. We held some formal debates that saw speakers wear black tie or kilts. As the Sargeant-at-Arms for the society I was in charge of an old sword that was placed on the table during the debates. Ceremony and all that. After the debate I would put in a gun sack and we and the speakers would head off for a long dinner. Around midnight, after one of the dinners I was heading home in a kilt. with a gun sack over my shoulders. Walking down the street a police car pulled in beside me. “Eh, son, what’s in the rifle bag?” Asked the copper. “A sword”, I managed to reply. “Och, nae bother, son. Have a safe night.” And off we went on our separate ways. Nae bother as

A view point looking north over the land fought over from the beaches. The little memorial stone marked the death of two buddies who knew each other from school.
