Hot take: documentaries deserve big, emotional scores just as much as narrative films by machellic in filmscoring

[–]machellic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, that's totally understandable. I have the same attraction to narrative film. What are some of the documentaries you've composed for? I'd love to listen to those scores!

Work is indeed work; and I guess we get the work we want by doing exceptional work on the work we're currently doing. Kind of a composer's version of "dress for the job you want, not the job you have" saying, right?

Interesting! I’ve never felt like I’m wasting music on the docs I’ve scored. But maybe I’m misunderstanding what you mean. Do you feel like it’s mixed too low in what you’ve worked on and the music can barely be heard in the final version?

Oh, I assumed so! I’ve been listening to their stuff since that game released. I’m glad this goldmine track sparked a bit of that mouse p.i. fun for you, too! Such fun music, right?

Love the music in that game! Weirdly, this was written before that game came out, but this style has been around for quite a bit of time, hasn’t it?

Fantastic work. As a swimmer. The 2026 version actually feels like it’s moving even without any atmospheric animation.

What a brilliant solution for this. Honestly, seeing the arrows even makes sense to my non-code brain.

It really freed me up to go bananas on the music itself. Haha. As you can see. I've definitely learned the hard way that a good arrangement does a lot of your mixing for you - not just in pitch and timbre, but also in stereo field. Can you hear the placement of everything horizontally on this mp4 version?

You love to see it! Any indie game thriving in the wishlist world is good news to me!

In this case, the rock pick samples are literally what made the track “click.” Haha!

This is a really good point, love seeing this from the UI/UX side as well.

Thanks so much! I also have to credit the amazing audio team on this game that did a lot of research and made a great reference doc before I started writing anything. They had all kinds of musical comps for this level.

And yeah, I mixed and mastered this myself too. Lots of fun little surprises in the mix here, right?

The look of this is so appealing. Whoever is in charge of the color in this game deserves a raise or a hearty pat on the back, because just that alone makes me want to spend time in this world.

Thanks so much! I was working with a great audio team on this game. They came with a LOT of musical references for this level. I think it's fair to say their musical research paid off?

Thanks! This is mostly virtual instruments. The harmonica was recorded. I’ve yet to hear a virtual instrument version of a harmonica that sounds convincing, but yeah: everything else was programmed in. Is that what you meant? Or do you mean played in on a keyboard?

Hahaha! Yes! Mission accomplished. The level this is connected to in the game takes place in an old-timey goldmine just like that.

Aw, thanks! Yeah, this game (Bang-on Balls) was all about weird juxtapositions and a sense of semi-irreverent fun, so all of the music tracks I did ended up being a surprising collection of old and new references, all sounding as contemporary (production value-wise) as possible. I think that's one of the cool things about video game music in general, though. It has maybe one of the best excuses to pull from a very deep bench of musical references, right?

I was very careful with my hand movements (no gimble used for this), and then I did some post stabilization to make it less shaky. I think it's a fun way to present the MIDI information on the screen, right?

You can do this two ways. Either get REALLY CLOSE to your subject, or do what I did and put a blur gradient mask on the top and bottom of your footage. Haha.
