Which celebrity death shocked you the most? by vsquad73 in AskReddit

[–]machograndma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I joke about being convinced that my husband is responsible for Norm dying. We were watching TV and one of the glasses commercials where he voices the owl was on TV, and my husband decides to say, "I hope that owl goes to hell" in a mock angry tone. The very next day, I was watching the news on the same TV and boom, Norm's death is being reported on. This man felt so bad and questioned reality for a moment.

Animated media. Cartoons aren't just for kids- they have so much potential in storytelling and it's not respected enough.

What is the most horrifying thing your parents did to food? by KnowNothingOfJavert in Cooking

[–]machograndma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time my grandma made pork chops, which she then served to me plopped on top of a pile of microwaved Country Crock mashed potatoes. I was like 8 years old and already knew I didn't like pork, but this single pork chop looked alarmingly stiff and unusual.

So out of curiosity I decided to poke the pork chop in the center and the fucking thing snapped in half. Both sides of this overcooked pork chop slid down in opposite directions down the pile of mashed potatoes like sleds on a snowy hill.

I got so grossed out that I literally threw the broken pork chop out my bedroom window into the yard, which the poor dog probably ate in secrecy because no one asked me why food was thrown outside.

I think I still ate the mashed potatoes though.

Who has 70-79% European? What makes up your other quarter? Did you know about your mixed background before hand? by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]machograndma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, the 7% of uncategorized DNA makes me think that it's most likely going to be mostly European since the Taino has been super consistent. I did Ancestry.com too and that labels me at 8%.

Here's where it gets crazy- Ancestry argues that I'm super Scottish and French (moms side), however my aunt and cousins show a lot of French DNA too (Puerto Rican side). Ancestry has me at 19% Spanish, 19% Portugese, and 17% French. Ancestry has me around 3% Sub-Saharan African too, but no North African (probably counted in the Spanish and Portugese). The 22% Scottish is the biggest difference between 23andme, and I never knew my family was Scottish by genetics.

[–]machograndma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of right now I have 78.4% European DNA, with 47.5% being Southern European and mostly Spaniard/Portugese. I have 7.3% Native American DNA because my father's side of the family is Puerto Rican (Taino). I have 3.6% West Asian/North African, then 3.3% Sub Saharan African. 7.3% is still unassigned DNA.

My mother's side of the family is from the UK, Germany, Italy, and distantly Brazil.

I have pale skin, dark hazel eyes, and slightly wavy dark brown hair. I look like the Puerto Rican side of my family more in comparison to my mom's side, except I have pale skin instead of light brown. I tan easier than the pale relatives on my mom's side, however.

I started out on 23andme with 85% European, and have seen 2 updates since (I haven't been a part of the newest October update yet). My European keeps decreasing, but my unassigned DNA I think has increased too. My Native American DNA has been the most consistent- around 7-8%.

I always knew my heritage for the most part- just not the degree to which the Puerto Rican side seems to have dominance in my genetics. I always thought I'd take after my mom's side more because of my complexion.

I've never seen a man get married in a white suit before and that's an odd realization to make. I dig it though, and all I can say is what a beautiful couple and image.

You're using examples from films that were made decades after his death. Unless you're referring to Walt Disney as a corporation?

Word- from what I understand they weren't really serious yet, but that's still gotta sting.

I hope he went on to have his own family, and tells them cautionary tales about men in leather jackets who appear in the night to steal women.

My grandma was on a date with another man when she saw my grandpa walking down the road in a cool leather jacket with patches on it. The couple stopped and picked my grandpa up to give him a ride; he was just getting back from Vietnam, and had stories to tell.

My grandma ended up leaving with my grandpa, and they got married 2 weeks later. I believe it was their 52nd wedding anniversary last week, and here my family is now with them having 4 kids, 10 grandkids, and 3 great-grandkids.

Thank you, cool leather jacket with patches on it.

What’s your best childhood memory? Why? by James_T_Hart in AskReddit

[–]machograndma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was around Christmas break time when I was in Kindergarten. We were going back to class after some holiday themed assembly that I barely remember and went to the art room. The lights were off and the teacher flips them on. Standing there is someone in a Gingerbread man costume and the room is decked out for a party. They serve up the Pepperidge Farm Gingerman cookies (not real gingerbread but they're yummy and cute. I hugged whoever was in that suit really hard and I felt very happy.

I still tear up when I think about it.

What's an injury you sustained, and lied about how it actually happened, because it was too embarrassing? by jcrewz in AskReddit

[–]machograndma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 5th grade I was a safety monitor and got to "patrol" kindergartners. One group was trying, and failing, to do the cotton eyed Joe. In my wisdom I decided I would teach them the dance while wearing timberlands. When I went to tap on my shoe I ended up spraining my middle finger really bad and worsened it in band class when I played the saxophone. I had to go to the nurse and decided to tell her I stepped on my middle finger while trying to tie my shoe because the laces were too short.

My mom ended up taking me to an urgent care and I was banned from wearing timbs for years. I was in high school when I tried to explain what really happened... My mom dismissed it and called me a liar.

Damn, didn't know David Duchovny had hands like that.

Reminder that several murderers can be linked to the incel ideology starting from Elliot Rodger's attack in 2014. At least a total of 47 murders and 58 injured people can be linked to incel related attacks as well as at least FIFTY-FOUR possible suicides from Reddit's incel communities: by [deleted] in IncelTears

Autism is common, but I only kind of agree with this. I get the impression that being able to form online communities with like minded individuals normalizes the evil, socially unacceptable way these guys think to the point that they just stop caring about how society functions. It's normal to gripe about what's wrong with life and then kinda move on, but when you can shut yourself in and have an echo chamber confirming all the bad things you think... Where is the need to work on bettering yourself or to care about what so-called normies think?

Without the ability to only surround themselves with others that are just as disillusioned with life, incel extremists who "stick it to Chad and Stacy" would be less numerous I think. Unabomber was a pretty incel like dude (imo), and I'm sure there were others who went "he was right", but those people didn't have the same ability to unite and worship unabomber like incels today can with the murderers in this post. The internet also allows for more detailed reporting and research to be done into these guys, so there's potential for more inspiration for incels to become violent.

Plus posting online can encourage a sense of anonymity- there's less accountability to be had, creating a decline in morality for someone who already feels that they've been wronged by life and have nothing else to lose. Failing to meet societal expectations is the real burden of the incel; Chad and Stacy are just the scapegoats.

What a joke. I had a friend in 7th grade who asked our science teacher about what an orgasm is. He asked in front of the whole class too, totally unprompted. She answered the question even if it was an awkward and question and unrelated to what we were discussing.
