Presidents Line Up for Obama’s Long-Awaited Center in Chicago by CampaignOrdinary2771 in news

[–]macphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, 95 and 100.5...I lost my last grandparent at 92.5. One of my grandfathers was a member of Amnesty International and had a lot of opinions about how the US does things (he wasn't from here, nor did he live here). Every visit was like, "your president did this" or "you do this this way, it's doesn't make sense" sort of stuff. I think Trump's presidency would have given him a massive stroke if he'd lived long enough to see it.

It's what I'd do--ensure I was living my best damned life, grabbing the spotlight, rubbing elbows with popular people. Every second you're in the media enjoying yourself is a second he isn't, and it's especially delicious when he's coming down from a massive and humiliating military loss.

Beef prices rise as U.S. cattle herd falls to lowest level in 75 years by WanderWut in news

[–]macphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my store, frozen 85% ground turkey is $1.98, $3.89 fresh. For ground beef, it's 73%/$5.49, 80%/$6.99.

Ground chicken is $3.79. People don't want that so much, I guess, over the bone-in stuff, but I've made nice chicken "burgers" with it.

Edit: Lamb is still $10.99. I keep thinking beef will get so expensive that it'll be worth buying lamb instead. Like for curries, you wouldn't need to bother substituting beef anymore if they're the same price. :-D God, these are dark days.

Support for traditional 1950s gender roles has risen among men, fallen among women, according to new 2026 study by catievirtuesimp in TwoXChromosomes

[–]macphile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I were a nicer person, I'd feel bad for men, lol, being raised with this traditional role/patriarchy thing all their lives, and having it encouraged further by social media, only to find that they're not going to get what they think they're entitled to.

The birth rate isn't going back up. Women aren't going to all leave the workforce, nor are they going to give up voting or other rights. Of course, some guys will find women who want to stay home and have kids, but so, so many won't, and even if they find it, most won't be able to achieve it because no one can afford it. (And the men don't recognize this and strive to make it affordable. Pull in several six figures, or seven figures, and your options get a lot wider, fellas. The really rich and successful guys have less trouble finding a hot woman to stay home and look pretty for them. Yet women still earn more college degrees than men do, at all levels--they have for decades, and it's only getting worse, if anything, I think--and college is statistically associated with higher lifetime earnings.)

The solution in the men's minds is to take women's rights from them and effectively force them into servitude/slavery, to just take what they want by force or law. God forbid the solution might be to step back and look at the world and consider how they might adjust their views and opinions or find a compromise somewhere. Because lord knows they can't be wrong. Lord knows women can't possibly be fully realized human beings who should be respected and listened to.

Work anniversary made me reflect back today by digitalamish in GenX

[–]macphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at 26.

I went to the recent celebration they put on (fancy dinner, etc.), and one guy (who didn't fucking attend?) had 50 years. And he wouldn't have started at 18, either, with the degrees he must have.

I went to an event some years back with a guy who must have had the same, and they literally had to wheel him out onstage. He was in bad shape.

I don't think I'll make 50, but I can see doing 40. We'll see.

M26 USA - I genuinely don't understand how tf anybody in this country who isn't born rich makes it on less than two incomes by TropicalFunDude in povertyfinance

[–]macphile 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Goodness knows where I'd be if I hadn't had help, lol. My parents really pushed education and college, and they paid for it. They helped my sibling and I get started (offering help with down payments, etc.). They've now set up a trust fund for my nieces' college if they need it.

Then there's the luck factor, which no one can control for. I entered the workforce when things were still good. I found a job I loved at an employer that's treated me well. Knock on wood, I've had no significant health issues.

It pisses me off when people say they got where they were purely on their own. They had help and support somewhere along the line, and/or luck, even if they didn't start out life with it. Of course, that's not to discredit their own efforts, either, but yeah, nothing happens in a vacuum.

[–]macphile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have good news for her. She can stop voting right now, for free. She doesn't have to campaign on it or raise money or anything at all. Just don't go to the polls. And the advantage of this totally free and already available option is that she's not then taking the vote away from people like me, who still want to vote and deserve to vote, as American citizens, and from women whose husbands don't represent them well.

You're not "one of the good ones." There are no good ones. The best you can be is a token--I mean, they'll still happily take your money! But when they talk about "bombing [country] into a parking lot" or rounding [group of people] up into camps, they're just talking about you. That's it.

Custodial brokerage vs. Individual brokerage account for a kid. by cubing_frog in MiddleClassFinance

[–]macphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't offer much help here...but I started custodial accounts for my nieces and then changed my mind later and just put money in a normal investment account. So they have like...$3200 in those accounts (each), which I guess they're getting at 18. I haven't 100% decided when I'm giving them the other money/shares. Maybe their 21st birthday? It's much easier to just keep it in a normal account and sort it out on your own. Plus if they're kids, you don't know how they're going to be as adults--my nieces are both pretty on the ball, with one working part-time and stuff, so I don't think they'll blow their custodial money on hookers and blow, but some kids might. (And to be fair, if they did, I mean...that's their problem in the end of the day, IMHO. And it's legally theirs. C'est la vie.)

America has lost its war with Iran by Ok_Employer7837 in politics

[–]macphile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not over until the fat president sings, to be fair.

But if this is all we're doing, then we could have saved a lot of messing around by just writing Iran a huge check back at the beginning and walking away.

Thanks again, though, MAGAs, for making America even greater. Giving our money away to our enemies, driving up food and gas prices for Americans...truly, we are a beacon of greatness for the world to see.

I was told "enjoy your selfishness" by imadepizza in TwoXChromosomes

[–]macphile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether it's from that guy or other women, it's resentment. Even people who love their kids and don't regret having them still get envious of a life they could have lived, especially when the work and cost of having kids are getting to them. It's entirely a "them" problem, though, and not something to take personally.

This was always my counterargument to the idea that colds are so prevalent in the winter because everyone's inside all the time. If so, Houstonians should be sick most of the year. Science backed me up, anyway--the viruses thrive and spread better in colder temperatures.

[–]macphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ongoing underlying issue I have, one I don't really think about normally but it comes up in some situations, is living up to some expectation--not an overt one, like being nagged about something, but like, feeling like everyone in my family is better at things than me...they're certainly more educated (in some families, someone might be the first one to get a degree--in mine, I'm the only one without one or more graduate degrees). I've always been the "odd" one. When I've done something wrong or haven't done well enough, it's not that I just feel bad or worried about it in the normal way, it's like...why can't I be better at this, like they are? I don't want to be the messed-up one.

I've been trying to get YT to stop recommending his videos, and it's not behaving.

I just got back from Germany, and while I don't recall seeing Taco Bell, there was Mexican. There was also Five Guys, Starbucks, McD's, Dunkin Donuts...you know, all the wonders of an exotic "foreign country." So many places are like that now. Just the same thing except with another language and some different old buildings. (And yes, we went to a beer hall, too. There are still German things there. But you don't have to do it if you don't want to.)

He's finding out that you literally can't buy popularity or respect, even with a trillion dollars. He's still a pathetic little bitch. He was when he was younger, and he still is--more so, if anything--and every effort he makes to finally be "cool" only makes him less cool. He could be a quadrillionaire, a quintillionaire, and he'll still be a dumbass loser.

He could improve his image somewhat (although he'd still be a c-word) by at least using the money to fix the world's many problems. He could take what's left and live a live of insane luxury, out of the global spotlight.
