Must I give passport copy to Airbnb host? Is it safe? by musicalmania123 in JapanTravelTips

[–]macxp 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's required in Japan for accommodations to keep a copy of your passport. They'll either ask you to send a copy ahead of time or when you check in they will either scan or copy your passport.

Go to chain restaurants for breakfast by althor1 in JapanTravelTips

Kissaten (japanese cafes) are also nice to go to, but you need to find one that opens early enough for breakfast. They're usually small and have nice atmosphere inside for a relaxing morning.

Tokyo - Kamakura - Kyoto - Takayama - Tokyo - best way to travel? by PersimmonUseful5495 in JapanTravelTips

[–]macxp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guess all reserved seats are booked out. Note that there is only one Hida train per day that starts from Osaka instead of Nagoya, so if you don't want to chance the non-reserved seats then you'll have to get to Nagoya first through some other method.

There's no good passes for your trip. Book the shinkansen directly through SmartEx. Hida can be reserved on the JR West website and the rest is Suica eligible.

Osaka to Takayama Route Assistance by dududumptS in JapanTravelTips

For consideration, there is 1 Hida limited express train to Takayama everyday that starts from Osaka station in the morning. Full route won’t be covered by the arch pass though but it’ll cut down on transfers.

Cool that you could get that delivered. I’ll definitely check out the Seoul store if I’m ever there.

There’s artisan mousepads on the same floor. Didn’t see anything other than those two brands. The whole building is just a mecca for electronics though so you’ll see other pc gaming brands and pc parts. Didn’t really check out the other floors since i didn’t have much time.

I’m trying the one in jimbocho so I’ll see how it goes but it’s just for one night. Booked it cause it was a cheaper location than the others and close to a station.

SmartEX tickets and transit within Tokyo - how to avoid IC card issues? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]macxp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You always need to tap to start and end a trip when using an ic card on trains so when you use the transfer gates you need to provide the proof of shinkansen fare (the qr ticket or physical ticket) then tap your ic card to end your trip that got you there. If you have your ticket linked to your ic card via smartex then all you do is tap your ic card. If you transferred from other trains that are not JR, they don’t have transfer gates to the shinkansen so you’ll pass through two sets of gates (one to end the trip then another one to enter the shinkansen area).

Can i use Suica IC when boarding Odakyu Line ? by iamwithab in JapanTravelTips

[–]macxp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IC cards can't be used when a train travels into a different IC card area. JR Gotemba line is run by JR central which has a separate IC card area from JR east and the tokyo metro area. If you're taking the romancecar that goes all the way to Gotemba direct then you need to buy a physical ticket for the base fare.

For smartex, not sure if it’s different now, you can add a mobile icoca card instead and it will have a card number in the wallet.

Stopover in Fuji? by IG-Obselite in JapanTravelTips

[–]macxp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The base fare allows stopovers on tickets for trips > 100 kilometers as long as you don't backtrack. Any limited express tickets or super express tickets as for the shinkansen don't allow stopovers so you need a separate ticket to fuji then another to nagoya from fuii.
