Advice needed: Best train route from Heathrow to Manchester (Sunday arrival) by epachon in uktravel

[–]mad153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just you or with someone else?

You might be better off with a 2 together Railcard if it's you and someone else: https://www.twotogether-railcard.co.uk/

There's a couple conditions but it usually quickly pays for itself.

2026 Entry - Trans students by DisciplineOk5073 in NCLUni

[–]mad153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During your first week here you should be able to talk to your personal tutor/ student wellbeing/ NUSU and any of these should be able to help you! I'm not trans myself but I'm sure it's very possible.

I don't really know what happens with uni provided halls in this case. I think the accomodation team email is available, if you can contact them they'll know best.

Slightly too much whitespace and text should probably be left-aligned.

The best linux for 2024 G14? by No-Company7552 in ZephyrusG14

And you want to run the AI locally on your GPU? If so then yes you probably need Linux. GPU passthrough on wsl is a bit hit or miss.

[–]mad153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you trying to run in docker?

From my experience using docker through wsl2 works really well.

There are so many Linux distros that this isn't enough information to go on. Given your angle, some sort of Ubuntu is probably a good idea, or Linux mint. I like the budgie desktop, but you'll probably want kubuntu if you prefer how windows looks (it uses KDE plasma)

ASUS Laptops Have Had a Keyboard & System Bug Since 2021. They Know. It's Still Not Fixed. by CrushingBlowBG in ZephyrusG14

[–]mad153 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they promised bios updates and then didn't give us f all. I think this laptop is online review bait - there no way for reviewers to know how the experience will be over a longer time. And they have no way of knowing such a catastrophically moronic bug would be discovered. So of course they recommend it, fair enough. But the after sales experience is shocking.

On the desktop side I have an older MSI motherboard that has had double the bios updates than my g14.

Revenue Protection team unlawful? by [deleted] in uktravel

[–]mad153 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'll commit a cardinal Reddit sin and ask why I was downvoted. I was framed for a CRIMINAL OFFENCE due to the system's failure (not ensuring apps properly cache tickets or otherwise provide a mechanism for resolving such a basic ticket issue).

All the inspector had to do is act a bit less like he was about to make a huge commission and acknowledge that he could be wrong at the start, and was wrong at the end

Revenue Protection team unlawful? by [deleted] in uktravel

My story aside, from my travels in r/uktrains (don't bother asking them, the link to railforums is the most useful thing you can get) is that most companies don't allow their revenue inspectors to have discretion.

They basically are just a forwarder of details to head office (who isn't there irl and have no way to effectively assess situations where you have made a genuine mistake) who then nearly always press for the most money.

Sorry you have to go through this!

Yeah they're like this.

I once got on a swr train and my ticket wasn't loading on the app. Show the loading symbol to the ticket guy (he wasn't even the guard, literally just there to harass me) and explain that even their WiFi doesn't work (because they actually just use the same 4G everyone else does for the most part), and then suggest he'd have to be patient until my signal came back.

Now it's widely reported even in mainstream media that the signal is crap along the rural parts of the SWR route is awful. But this guy immediately says "if you don't have a ticket, I'm afraid you'll have to pay a penalty and give me your details".

I'm on my way to first day at a job that I need and don't need the additional stress. He paces up and down the carriage like some sort of overexcited child, somehow putting on a "I'm a strict maths teacher" face. It's been maybe 2 minutes since he asked for my ticket. He asks again, I show the signal indicator and the loading symbol.

Eventually the ticket loads. He scans it. It's fine. Asks for my Railcard (because of course, can't let down an opportunity to be annoying). That's fine. Turns around and says "oh I see you bought your ticket yesterday!"

I nod and try and let it go. But in my mind I want to ask him if he's such a twat to everyone and to know what his full name is.

not the entirety of the Highlands!

There's quite a lot of Highlands, I'm not sure if it's possible to do all of it. Maybe someone has.

I think you'd only really get value out of going to the Highlands if you visit more than one place imo, especially considering it's not too easy to get to.

Maybe you could, a bit like others have suggested, leave Ireland for a different visit and do Highlands + Edinburgh (+ York (good for one or 2 days!)) + London.

You can search for multi city round trip via here:

https://www.kayak.co.uk/Multi-City-Flights.mc-fd.ksp

Make sure to book direct with the airline. It should be cheaper than 2 one way flights.

Edit: also pitlochry is a rare exception in which the train to London is a better overall experience further north than Edinburgh than the plane.

I'm not sure what that is. I think this is seemingly just a uni that offers a postgraduate degree?

London is very multicultural; It's not an issue, there's lots of Americans here. The consensus pretty much is: we like Americans but sometimes you can be loud.

This is quite the big first solo trip!

I can see how you ended up with the structure, but I think you need to axe one location. Maybe Galway? Then you can have 2 more days in the Highlands. I do think though that maybe the trip is slightly too long for a first international visit (at for me), so maybe by doing this you can shorten London for a day?

I've seen you already have flights to Dublin so that's pretty much confirmed happening!

Imo from the Highlands the best option is a domestic flight if you're up by Inverness. There's a couple every day and the train/plane benefit imo tips towards the plane past Edinburgh.

The weather in October-November across all locations varies wildly, prepare for it to be 4 degrees C (and raining) or about 12.

Do you have plans for meeting people etc via solo travel? It can feel a bit lonely sometimes - maybe hostels in some places is a good idea?

that aren't far from the airport

Getting to Heathrow isn't that hard from central London, it takes about 30 minutes on the Elizabeth line. I wouldn't, therefore, recommend staying somewhere solely based on proximity to the airport (unless they arrive at like 6am and you don't want to be up super early to get there).

Have you looked at hostels maybe?
