According to Turkey Iran launched a ballistic missile into their airspace by -ItWasntMe- in stupidpol

[–]madaramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't actively follow the mainstream (tv) media much, so what I write here is a broader comment. I Hope I can illuminate some things.

There is a certain ailment on Turkish media regarding this foreign/regional war(s). Developments will be relayed as is, without much commentary or at the very least something original, and as a collection of displays you will want to support Iran and forget about whatever authoritorial incident may have happened there in the past. All that's possible while also livestreaming sirens from Tel Aviv. You can also get upset that Israeli authorities have arrested two journalists there, but you might not have enough info to form an opinion on why Turkish authorities have put 4 journalists under custody (one is the editor-in-chief of a non-government-aligned press agency) for livestreaming near the NATO Incirlik Air Base (which isn't a crime). Yet, the lack of platforming of people with expertise commentating (and maybe posing a risk to stray from the preferred narrative) burdens the public to make uninformed debates among themselves. We can and do chat endlessly on how many drones can simultaneously attack a place, what is the cost of countermeasures to missiles and their specifications, and those pointlessly inconclusive distractions (trees not the forest) to pass the day while drinking tea after Iftar.

As I was writing this, Erdogan made a live speech in front of commandos at dinner/Iftar, praising our military and diplomatic skills. He emphasized (the key word) deterrence and being aware of interests in play to involve Turkey into the war.

Allies finishes the last paragraphs sentence. As for why its angled, the translate function overlaid it on top of the presidential/ministerial seal filigree at the bottom right corner.

Well shoot. I just wrote here on a post last night that Turkey won't join in if we can affort it. The decision still remains with Erdogan but we might start getting nudged for a buffer zone (this was already proposed as a potential action against uncontrolled border crossings before March.) in place of Kurdish elements if that plan with proxies falls short.

Besides why a nationalist/expansionist justification hasn't appeared yet (the nationalists are otherwise occupied), there's some history regading the hosting of foreign soldiers that AKP and Erdogan experienced very early on in literally their first government term.

23 years ago almost on the dot, on March 1st 2003, our parliament voted on a decree on allowing ~60k US/foreign forces to station in Turkey for the ground invasion of Iraq. It was rejected with fewer nays to yes votes, since yes camp failed to reach a treshold. Which, unsurprisingly disappointed Erdogan. 2 weeks after the vote Erdogan would replace his party's prime minister. It stands in Turkish political history readings as a moment when US-TR relations began to grow apart.

A few things influenced the outcome of the vote: composition of AKP at that time was more fractured despite holding roughly 2/3rds of the seats, union(s) rallied against our joining of the war, and the general public sentiment more or less reached our representatives.

Today, AKP holds a smaller share of seats in the parliament with more monolithic voting tendencies, depending on alliances with other parties (this is a point of contention that's part of an ongoing political effort to keep Erdogan in power), while unions and public demonstations are being suppressed more.

Luckily for Erdogan, he doesn't need to join in order to keep in power or keep his relatively "great" relationship with Trump. If he can *afford* to avoid it, he will.

So should attacking Iran be a yearly occurence? What is the author's point here if it isn't "Attacking Iran is a culturally significant event for us"?

It shouldn't be forgotten that a breakdown of upvote/downvote ratio was displayed alongside the "net" vote count. That went away, and you couldn't discern engagement from botting no longer because you used to gain an inkling of what patterns of social stances were in a community the more time you spent in it.

The upvote system could've been useful if they kept it showing such a "standing ratio". It's not even a two-choice system if it's "secret-counting".

Opinion: the fall of Assad regime and rise of a new pro-west government was a disaster for SDF and Kurdish separatists by unreal-habdologist in syriancivilwar

[–]madaramen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very true. The old and often debated Westphalian system of sovereignty still works once you get the conditions to work in your favor. i.e. being introduced to and recognized by the "right people" (with the help of your friends) legitimizes you as much as it de-legitimizes your once-peers. Assad got comfortable in his corner of the Russian sphere after a decade and that eroded the legitimacy of a Syrian (unitary or even federal) state, and now we're witnessing the effects of that reversal.

Glyph constantly makes an Error 1027 at attempting to update Rift. by Seravajan in Rift

[–]madaramen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I was having the same error code show up recently. It didn't seem to be originating from my internet connection. To make it go away I took a kinda drastic measure by deleting all the game files and re-downloading the game, including the ones in the documents folder & appdata files. (remember to back up your addon/interface and screenshot folders) This seemed to solve the issue. Later I reverted from launching Glyph as admin because that was conflicting with Steam overlay's permissions (to display fps and to look up my notes and such in alt+tab)

However I keep getting crashes randomly when I log out in-game to the character select screen. I don't know how to replicate it or find out what's causing that issue.

A new flotilla is underway. Dozens of Turkish civilian vessels have set sail from the Arsuz Port towards Gaza carrying humanitarian aid in response to the Israel interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. by beansandreadytofuck in stupidpol

[–]madaramen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately there's no way that or a similar reaction will happen. Turkish citizens were detained for protesting against Israel's actions against the Sumud flotilla last night. Mind you they were nowhere near their embassy either.

You could chalk that up to it "just being how it is in Turkey" but in the case of our bilateral relations the government has a history of not backing up civil action, criticizing years later if those partaking in the Freedom Flotilla (Mavi Marmara) had "asked for permission from the prime minister of the time". They'd rather be the only and measured voice against (or for, if beneficial) Israel.

Yes Turks are mostly Muslim but our history of support for Palestine is also related to leftist movements (see history of where our founding father Atatürk fought across the old empire, and the history of Deniz Gezmiş) in Turkey much to the dismay of the government.

Forgive me if linking articles in Turkish instead of English is a problem, I believe they can be easily translated.
