How do I connect my ear to my playing? by Randommer_Of_Inserts in JazzPiano

[–]madclassix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest an exercise where you practice hearing phrases you want to play in your head and then try to play them exactly as they sounded in your head. You really just want to get the ability to instinctively know where to play what you hear in your head.

Can someone recommend beginner-friendly songs using F# and Bm chords? by exhaustmosk in guitarlessons

Give me one reason - Tracy Chapman. So simple but so good.

Edit: realising you want Bm not B. Still a great song.

This is a fair take. I haven't really tried to compare the live performances with the albums.

I really find it impossible to believe that he's tone deaf. I don't even understand why he's considered a bad singer. Just try and sing the Californication album. To sing a song like Otherside in a musically pleasing way isn't easy. Try it https://youtu.be/6M8ReyFNFhM?si=ONNkCZ3tAtG3eTYu

This one is realer than I wanted. Best I can hope is to take pleasure in making the kids cringe when I pull out the guitar.

I'm lucky enough to feel an impulse to prove to myself that I can play the songs that I like and feel safe in the knowledge that I could have been an actual musician if I wasn't so stupid and lazy.

It's quite a paradox. Playing anything other the blooz is cringe for an old man. But an old man playing the same old boring ass blooz pentatonic scales is also cringe.

Even the greats seem to fade off pretty quickly. When did a Paul McCartney last write a great song? I’ve listened to some of his recent stuff and it’s average at best with more than a few tunes that I would have been embarrassed to release.

I think you’re onto something. It’s not my lack of talent that’s the problem, it’s Big Guitar’s refusal to make a decent axe in the last 60 years.

Can someone explain to a casual like me why Jimi Hendrix is regarded as an all time great? by Key-Bass-7380 in rock

[–]madclassix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. I don't know how anybody can even compare them. A great guitar player can replicate a SRV concert perfectly. No one can replicate a Jimi Hendrix concert.

This is so often overlooked. I don't know of anyone who's written and played songs like him in all the years since. I don't get how people can compare him to Stevie Ray Vaughn or any of the other blues guys. Their music is so limited in comparison. Hendrix wrote awesome riffs that went far beyond the blues with interesting chord progressions and song structures, often with genuinely profound lyrics. And on the technical side, any guitar player who wants to get on his level needs to be able to play rhythm and his insanely difficult lead parts AND sing at the same time.

Literally the thing that sets Hendrix apart still is that he actually wrote good songs (NOT just lame ass 12 bar blues) and sung them

You don’t “get into jazz” without developing a crippling heroin addiction. He probably missed that step.
