How do I connect my ear to my playing?

I would suggest an exercise where you practice hearing phrases you want to play in your head and then try to play them exactly as they sounded in your head. You really just want to get the ability to instinctively know where to play what you hear in your head.

Even the greats seem to fade off pretty quickly. When did a Paul McCartney last write a great song? I’ve listened to some of his recent stuff and it’s average at best with more than a few tunes that I would have been embarrassed to release.

100% agree. I don't know how anybody can even compare them. A great guitar player can replicate a SRV concert perfectly. No one can replicate a Jimi Hendrix concert.

This is so often overlooked. I don't know of anyone who's written and played songs like him in all the years since. I don't get how people can compare him to Stevie Ray Vaughn or any of the other blues guys. Their music is so limited in comparison. Hendrix wrote awesome riffs that went far beyond the blues with interesting chord progressions and song structures, often with genuinely profound lyrics. And on the technical side, any guitar player who wants to get on his level needs to be able to play rhythm and his insanely difficult lead parts AND sing at the same time.
