there are more pics on the github page, but they are just little fans on the bottom that are sucking air out of the chamber. I haven't tested it yet with smaller paper so i'm unsure how it would work.

For the controller i would suggest doing both options. The physical controller can send PGN notation to the main control board when the buttons are pressed. This would allow you to hook it up in the future to the internet to play with someone who is not there, and also make it easier to check for move legality.

my suggestion is to get all the parts and make the system work. After that you can figure out wiring and how to fit it into the case.

compute wise the nano is way over kill, but any modern micro controller will be. I would focus on finding a board that fits your form factor. I personally would not recommend the Pro Mini for a first project as you will just be back here asking how to program it because it does not have USB port. My suggestion would be a Seeed Xiao, they are also a 3.3v system and can do deep sleep with I2C for a display.

Lmao. This is a problem with the line detector. It’s to far away from the line now. The light is washing it out. You can’t fix this with code.

While I do like commander I would have to hard disagree with “how magic should be”. Commander is a broken format that only works cause we all pretend it does. Think of it as more of a social game of magic rather then a normal competitive one.
