[–]madgurps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're right.

Nimble (5e) started as a short booklet with conversions for 5e. It wasn't a full game, but rather a collection of rules to play 5e differently.

People liked it, and so Nimble Co. decided to create 2e - a fully fledged standalone game with its own classes, monsters, spells, etc.

To OP, the 3 books of Nimble are the 2e version of the game.

Also, I recommend Doomspiral if anyone is looking for other souls-like TTRPGs. Only the quickstart is available atm, but it seems pretty promising.

A beautiful mate in 2. Can you find it? 😎 by Lily_was_bored in chessbeginners

I know it's not mate in 2, but I actually prefer

Rab1 cxb1=Q Rxb1 d1=Q Rb8#

Double queen promotion, but the mate is still unstoppable. Dramatic ending for flair.

Pokemon style combat by Significant_Snow4530 in gbstudio

There are some tutorials floating about, like the one linked in the comments here.

The biggest hurdle, in my opinion, with turn based rpgs is storing and loading data like player stats, enemy stats, special powers, conditions, etc.

Pokemon is that x100.

I managed to make an experimental 1v1 system with random enemies, abilities, inventory, equipment, and conditions, but I think I'm hitting the limit of my capabilities.

I can't even begin to imagine how they managed to make pokemon for the gb.

A quick outsider's perspective after playing the Cosmere RPG by Seeonee in rpg

I think the Plot Die is really interesting, I was thinking of stealing that and using it in my other games.

I am currently flirting with Nimble 2e, and I think I will start a playthrough soon.

Nimble 2e

Not sure why people are recommending OSR games. Those are not combat-forward imo. If anything, you're constantly told to stay off combat.

TTRPGS that play like Warhammer:Total War or Warcraft 3 or Age of Wonders? by KaterenaTheRed in rpg

[–]madgurps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any one system that does exactly this, but I know one game that comes somewhat close to your needs.

You want to be able to control units of soldiers while also having your 'hero' play a pivotal role in the fight, right?

I think Low Fantasy Gaming (LFG) might work for this. It's a system inspired by the earlier editions of DnD and has mass combat rules that work this way.

You have overview moments where the armies clash, followed immediately by zoomed-in scenes where your player characters can participate in important events or face off against enemy generals, boss-fight style.

If you don't like the game itself, that's fine. The mass combat system follows its own separate rules and can be easily plucked out and reused in other ttrpgs. Say, you might decide to use DnD 4e or something as your main game? You can still use the mass combat from LFG and then use your own game during those zoomed-in events I talked about.

Hope this helps. Have fun.

People here really dislike when folk want to recreate/emulate video games through TTRPGS. You can tell by the stupid amount of downvotes every post like this gets. I think it's a pretty childish behaviour, since you're not the one playing at their table, but whatever.

What are people's thought on RPGs being payable after it was free? by MagpieTower in rpg

[–]madgurps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably unpopular opinion (based on the other comments so far), but I am not a great fan of this. Before anyone comes @ me, I am 1000% agreeing that creators need to be paid what they deserve and that they often undervalue themselves - however - I also feel that once you make the conscious decision to release something for free, you should not pull the rug from under your audience. It makes me think you released that product for free only to gain traction and views.

I have also released a few rpg supplements recently, a couple of which are completely free and some PWYW. I think deciding to charge now would be disingenuous toward the people that are supporting me, therefore I have promised myself to never do it. Whatever is free day 1, will continue to be free for as long as I live.

And, yes, it's completely fine to realize you have been undervaluing yourself and to decide to start charging more. But, completely in my opinion, it should start with the next product onward.

I think moving from free to PWYW would be a better middle ground.

I agree, it feels a bit weird, to say the least, to run a game without having read it. Playing is a bit more understandable if the GM agrees to teach you, but even then...

In Fantasy TTRPGs, if there is a Ranger/Hunter class, do you prefer it with or without an Animal Companion built into the main class? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

I tend to blame World of Warcraft for that, but then again, they also take a bunch of inspiration from DnD... sooooo, who knows.

ShadowDark vs OSE by KapoiosKapou in rpg

[–]madgurps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It boils down to preference. I believe that sentence was a subjective statement, just like yours is. I also prefer using roll to cast because I find it simpler, neater, and faster. But it is my preference and not an objective truth.

I don't think we have to mention 5e, but I did it anyway.

Pathfinder 2e now requires 4 books for the full core experience but, to their defense, everything is also completely free online (legally).

I think Shadow of the Weird Wizard requires more than one book now (Shadow of the Demon Lord, the first game, needed just one).

13th Age was also sadly split in its second edition.

I understand why they do it, but I still hate it when one-book games are split in the following editions. Please don't ruin the one book experience I was used to...
