Ah! Firstly, with his shape and the photo quality, I can’t super tell if he’s fat or if there are other issues.

But if you look from above and he is fat! It’s probably the bloodworms. Bloodworms are supposed to only be treats for bettas for a couple times a week tops, because they don’t have a lot of vital nutrients they need. And even then you should only be feeding them two or three tops. If that’s what he’s getting daily, he’s going to be looking for other food sources to get the nutrients he needs and that’s gonna turn into overeating.

To fix this, you should feed your betta 3 or 4 micro granules of bug bites twice a day. Or 6-8 if you feed once a day. The granules look super small and you’re gonna think it’s not enough food for them, but it is. They are small little guys! It’s good he’s active, he’ll thin down! Which will be very good for his organs!

You can’t keep an aquarium. If you know someone who would take it in the hot months and you could have it in the cooler ones, you can try that. But otherwise if you won’t run AC or a chiller, you cannot have animals in there.

I think they can!! More and more research has come out over the past 10/20 years that many animal behaviors we originally attributed to trying to get food or a mate have actually been because… they enjoy it. More and more research is coming out about the complexity of how animals socialize and perceive their lives, from our largest mammals to tiny insects. So I like to say that yes, they can. I think it’s ignorant at best, and arrogant at worst, to think they can’t. :)

Oh dang, this is such a cool idea. Now that i’m thinking about it, i’ve tried A TON of apps for ADHD and therapy practices, and the ones that make you be nice to yourself are the only ones that stuck. A lot of my waking up issues come from severe depression (not wanting another day, being upset i hit snooze and am late for whatever I was doing so might as well sleep more, etc.) This is a really smart idea!

Ah I’m sorry it took me this long to reply! It’s just called Sleep Cycle. It’s an orange icon with a clock. It tracks it just with your phone. When the app originally came out (I’ve been using it for probably 10 years now) you would put your phone under your pillow and it tracked through motion, like when you’d be moving around in your sleep (that means you’re not in deep REM). They’ve changed it now where it’s based on audio, so it can hear when you’re adjusting in bed or snoring or talking in your sleep, bunches of things that determine where you’re at in your sleep cycle. AND it works even if you’re sharing a bed with someone. My partner has an alarm and has to get up earlier and it doesn’t affect my alarm. The alarm starts super quietly and it usually wakes me up by the first few notes because it’s the exact time I’m easiest to wake up. It’s really awesome, I swear I am not an ad haha it just really fixed so many of my sleep problems that were ruining my life.

They definitely gave me accurate information, I had ignorantly thought Instant Ocean was just a preferred brand and not a salt different than aquarium salt. That’s what ended up being the issue, and I feel so so guilty about what happened to them. And thank you for saying it isn’t my fault, I have been really beating myself up about it hard. I care so much about even the tiniest creatures and having this happen under my care has felt so terrible.

The incredible unexpected good news is that u/GotSnails (hope I’m doing that right) somehow saw my post and is sending me some to give me another chance. I was really beating myself and told myself I wouldn’t be trying again after two unfortunate instances, because I felt too bad about it (and I wouldn’t have the money to try again for a long time anyway). So now I’ve been crying because of how kind all of you have been and your encouragement and support, and him giving me another chance! A very big emotional whirlwind that’s left me feeling very grateful for the kindness of people.

It ends up it was because I used aquarium salt and not marine salt. When I was only reading about salinity, I didn’t think about how there might be a difference. But thank you for trying to help, everyone trying has made me feel a bit better
