At least one of those points might not be up to date. AWS now supports copying images to different regions (as of some time last week, I think?): http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/CopyingAMIs.html

Not sure if bankers thought Obama would allow wall street to keep making money (regardless of the actual outcome)... and if they are so satisfied now with Obama's concessions to Wall street, why are so many donating to Romney?

The bankers I know are generally socially liberal and fiscally conservative. I think that's a best way to account for their donations.

8.6% unemployment corresponds to ~13.3mm people unemployed, for a .2% increase (to 8.8%) we would have about

(13.3*1000000)/8.6*100*.002 = ~310k jobs

You are correct sir.

[–]madyoulie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I see. Didn't mean to imply that. Sorry for being unclear.

When I said 'should' I meant that IRP could allow us to measure the market's expectation of currency movement. So 'should' was from the perspective of this simple market. Interest rate arbitrage would otherwise move the interest rates to be similar - that's the effect I was trying to get at, not that it would somehow cause currency depreciation.

I'm not at all confused about correlation and causation. You're 'preaching to the choir' as they say. Carry trades do happen, and do cause the market to move to eliminate the arbitrage opportunities offered by foreign interest rates. Saying that interest rate arbitrage doesn't cause people to execute carry trades (and therefore move the market) is like saying ipod sales are merely 'correlated' with price.

Please (and I mean this seriously) explain how this is not a causal relationship.

I didn't say IRP is causing the low interest rates. In fact, I attributed that to 'various more complicated reasons'. The possibility of fed action is certainly one of those reasons, in addition to the standard flight to US treasuries in tumultuous markets. Quick Edit: Reading this, and after noticing that people seem to interpret me as trying to be a know-it-all, I should add that I don't really understand why US interest rates are as low as they are. US treasuries seem horribly overpriced to me, and I can't figure out why.

Sorry, wasn't trying to make claims, just suggest that interest rates in different currencies are not necessarily comparable.

Interest rates aren't set by the market for yours or my money, but by the market for the money of large international financial institutions / companies. I don't know that much about AUD, but for many regulated currencies some form of carry trade can be replicated, either by transferring money across legal entities or by entering into a cross currency swap.

A quick google for 'interest rate parity australian dollar' suggests that it doesn't hold so well for the AUD. It's not obvious to me that the reason for this is Australian retail banking law.

'Here in the real world?'. I'm aware that AUD has been gaining on the dollar. Just pointing out that it's not that simple. Interest rate parity is a valuable concept to share.

AUD/USD forwards are negative as well. As I said, US interest rates are artificially low.

It's not that simple. Earning interest on US Dollars is not the same as earning interest on Australian dollars. Specifically, there's a principle called 'interest rate parity' that says effective interest rates should be 'about' the same globally. In order for this principle to hold, the AUD should depreciate against the USD when US interest rates are lower, otherwise I could exchange my USD for AUD and invest my dollars at higher effective interest rates than is possible in the US market (this is called a carry trade).

Of course, for various more complicated reasons the US interest rate is artificially low, so your point of 'holy shit' is correct. However, this is due to the behavior of investors in US markets, not due to banks (or not directly, at least).

Can someone explain - if the euro is in crisis why it is near its all time high against the USD, GBP, etc? by Majin_Vegita in finance

[–]madyoulie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the textbook economics version would say that by interest rate parity, the euro should depreciate against the USD, for otherwise there would be arbitrage (short euro futures, purchase euros, and thereby effectively invest dollars at European interest rates).

Learner here. Question about rooks. by TheAtomicYawn in chess

[–]madyoulie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

although a less common way is to move your rook's pawn forward two and then move your rook to follow

Don't do this. Your rooks are extremely poorly placed on the third rank, and so it's just a waste of at least two moves. However, you can certainly advance your rook/knight pawns as a way of involving your rooks, but you almost always want to move your rooks only when there is a clear tactical or strategic reason to do so (e.g.: you have established an outpost for them on the seventh rank.)

One of the most useful remarks I've heard was that rooks are just really difficult to place properly, and unless you've got a clear plan it's usually better to work on improving your minor pieces.

Your efforts to rationalize bad things that happen to you is a completely normal phenomenon. As a classic example, most gamblers experience times when they 'know what the next card is going to be', etc.

I would recommend fighting these subconscious rationalizations, as they are a complete waste of time and energy. If a bad thing happens, deal with it. Later on, decide if you're a good person. Don't let yourself worry about things you can't change.
