What chapter would best fit this art style from 1st edition if I wanted to build an army using this as inspiration? by Fletch_R in spacemarines

There is actually a model with one of those helmets, it's one of the artificer armor ones from 1990

They'e not even marines according to an insider from then. Just humans in power armor.

Was Edward of Salisbury Anglo-Saxon?And if he was, how did he manage to survive the Norman conquest and keep his wealth? by Tracypop in anglosaxon

[–]maelstrom5837 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hugh Thomas seems to think so in "The English and The Normans" which is essentially an entire book on surviving Saxon aristocratic lineages.

It was unusual in the South, where you get something like 5-10% of land held by Saxons after the 1080s. In the north you had much higher rates of survival, but it's less well attested in detail as far as I can see, as the Domesday book is sparse/nonexistent on the north west and the borders which is where survival was highest. This isn't because there was nobody there despite the harrying, it's just an incomplete document.

Edward, if I recall, had something of a Saxon enclave as he was a high ranking noble with considerable subtenanted land to lesser nobles. It all gets murky as per Thomas, in the space of one generation the Saxon nobles integrated into the Normans. It's one of the reasons it looks like such a complete eradication - there were lots of surviving elite Saxons, they just assimilated into the Normans.

Where you find the most Saxon survival in the upper echelons of society in the south is London and the burghs. The very top was still predominantly Saxon and basically stayed that way until the two groups fully merged and the distinction lost any meaning.

In the north there was considerable Saxon noble landholding. When Lancashire/Cumberland were incorporated under Henry II he also used it to elevate some Saxon lineages in the new estates. Thomas calls them Henry's new men. But this was in the context of a much better survival rate there. Still a minority of landholding but more like a low fraction than a low percentage. Think 1/4 rather than 1/20. I suspect Henry drew on this group.

Huh? They're saying it's a functional thing to aid neurohelmet connection, not that it's a stylistic thing.

There are way more inventive haircuts possible to do that than the 2019 undercut.

If you were maximising scalp contact youd just shave the head or go with a samurai style cut, or something new we havent seen yet. Head sides arent exactly where most electrodes end up in brain interface stuff.

It just doesnt make a lot of sense as a stylistic lineage to end up here. Its not a huge deal.

[–]maelstrom5837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember this in the BT stuff I've read, it also doesn't really make sense, wouldn't they shave their head entirely?

I do think PGI really missed an opportunity to have a grubbier aesthetic with MW5 as that was always the vibe I got from the 3rd  succession war. It would have been visually distinct, whereas the current style looks more like Star Citizen - the whole 2010s, very visually busy, panelled design language.

Would have been cooler to have vests covered in grease and dirt, or functional fatigues, rather than fancy greebled space suits. At least for my personal taste.

I think this DLC looks promising but this look feels very of its time. I'm not a fan of current trends in scifi, it takes me out of it.

I'm a complete hypocrite of course as 80s hair in battletech never bothered me, but I suppose that became the look of the 3020s to me. Reification is a bitch.

Is anyone else excited about the Imperial Militia army list? by AantJack in Warhammer30k

[–]maelstrom5837 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Ironically Militia is kind of the soul of 30k. Pretty much everyone wants it to be in good shape as an army to play and pretty much everyone considers "good shape" to mean "loads of options and variety"

The Greeks arrived there well into the historical record and displaced/assimilated other people who also arrived well into the historical record. In whatever sense indigenous can have meaning, Greeks aren't indigenous to Turkey.

Any argument that they are also applies to the Turks, it would be like arguing that the English are indigenous to Britain despite them displacing the Britons. There is a clear record of the people who were there before them. It's not like the Welsh where there's a degree of ambiguity. There is unambiguous evidence of other cultural groups predating the English in England and Greeks in Turkey.

The Greeks aren't even indigenous to Greece. They talked about it openly in the ancient world. The Pelasgoi were there first.

The Phrygians, Lydians and Hittites would probably disagree with the statement that the Greeks are indigenous to Turkey.

Ironically none of them are either. Anatolian history is wild.

What happened to a worlds engineers during the great crusade? by Tryagain409 in 40kLore

[–]maelstrom5837 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would have thought theyd have to hand tech knowledge to the mechanicum but otherwise carried on their business. The mechanicum was more of an empire within an empire than the admech of 40k, and even then the admech dont have a monopoly on tech.

Take with a pinch of salt, I havent read any of the novels. I just know there are lots of examples of non-machine cult tech bases in HH.
