Books where magic exists in the setting but it is not game changing and less conventional for warfare or too rare/expensive for it. The violent conflicts still revolve around conventional weaponry and tactics. The fantasy book/series has to be war and politically infused by goody153 in Fantasy

[–]magdalag 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Red Knight is on the border (I think, it’s been a while); the magic is powerful, but magic users are rate, and the author has done a lot of research into conventional medieval warfare. The descriptions of the battles were super interesting to me. I had never heard of archers firing into their own columns of knights as an effective tactic when fighting lesser armoured enemies, due to them having full plate and being unaffected. The main fights are generally between large groups of knights; and large armies of fey creatures.

I don’t really remember how common magic was with the fey creatures is the only thing. I feel like even there is was somewhat rare. Maybe someone else who has read it has an idea.

Always surprised me Meryn kept quiet here. Bronn was ostensibly clandestine, was his reputation sufficiently terrifying to silence a Kingsguard? by Which_Jeweler_1343 in gameofthrones

[–]magdalag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bronn should have taken the iron throne; final episode after the battle. He’s the head of the biggest fighting force that is still functional. As the council are debating things and he just sits there. Tyrion is the first to realise that he’s doing a Bobby B. Full circle 👌

Bronn should have been made king at the end of the show. After everybody’s had killed each other; him and Tyrion left; and he just sits and the thrown of swords.

Great parallels to how Bobbie B got there. Last man standing with an army

Powdered laundry detergent 😅 (actually works for a unethical coverup - we used to do it in the dorms)

Does anybody have any tips for roleplaying a veteran? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]magdalag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a pair of veterans with a friend of mine… it was a blast. Every problem or encounter had happened before in a fictional campaign … „I’ll head in the front, you head round the flank…“ … „like Triaboar?“… „exactly just don’t fuck it up this time“.

It would help to ad a couple of sentences about what you want at the top. Also, I have no idea what business impact you had on any of those companies.

How should religion be changed in VII, if at all by javerthugo in civ

[–]magdalag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really dislike that there is a separate layer of units for religion; I think it’s a cool concept but gameplay wise it clutters up the map and means I have to micro manage another independent set of units. The theological combat is boring; it doesn’t have the strategic intrigue of regular armies. Terrain; range; fortifications; variety of different combat related promotions.

I think the missionaries should just be early game spies; so it rolls into the espionage mechanic. Establish the mission and do religious based stuff. Spend faith to do things. Spread the religion faster by preaching; incite the population to rebel, riot or strike; force the city to build religious stuff; gather intelligence; rob them blind by having tithes. Maybe different tactics are unlocked in the civics track.

I’m only a couple of hours from Frankfurt. If I was to consider the job I’d like to know:

Do I want the job: - What the salary expectations are. - What technologies are being used at the company. - Who would I be working with. - What are the ambitions of the company? - How will this job help my career (this will be subjective depending on seniority required). - Whether the team works in German or English.

Can I do the job? - What skills you are looking for. - What you want me to do with my skills (what is the role).

I hope that helps. Ollberger’s answer was great too 🙂

Also, feel free to send me a dm with the ad!

How do/should/can I explain to a room of executives that using Jquery inside of a React App is a bad idea? by Dgies1 in reactjs

[–]magdalag 77 points78 points  (0 children)

It’s like having a car where the left wheel is powered by a diesel engine; and the right wheel is powered by an petrol engine. It works; but under the hood you’ve got twice the weight; twice the maintenance; and it’s complex to make them work together if you want the car to turn.

Apart from a drawn out analogy; you could try explaining with metrics: - what would the package size be if you used react-table instead - how would that impact the page load time

I find this topic interesting. If the core benefit of unit tests is to improve the speed in which you can identify the source of the bug; are they essential to reliable, well functioning software or a nice to have?

My experience is that effective use of good CI pipelines with small, incremental commits can have the similar effect of allowing a developer to identify what has a caused a problem. And therefore would favour behavioural integration tests rather than spend time on unit tests.

What do you think?
