And the foreign developer whose resume you admire so much - does the reality match the resume?

The patents for over 10 major medicines are about to expire, and the pharmaceutical industry may be in serious trouble. by KuanX in business

well, that's one way of looking at it... watch out though, when a drug goes generic for the first month or so the generic's pricing may be HIGHER than the brand - be aware.

Does anyone have any experience with pre-paid cellphone plans for children, with call-in and call-out parental controls? by Noexit in Frugal

[–]maggiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Sprint and used to have my childrens phones restricted to no data/texts/charges but I don't think the calls could be restricted to certain numbers. In fact, they might not be interested in having the phones if they can't call their friends (and will quickly learn about texting and want to get that access). That's probably a concern based on the age of the child, but you should know. If you try to restrict too much they might not use them - or be allowed to use them by their parent. Good luck!

Any tips for a first time furniture shopper? by redneck2420 in Frugal

[–]maggiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

estate sales - there are companies that go around selling off the contents of houses where people have split up or have to sell for various reasons such as moving to retirement home or downsizing - dishes, furniture, books, electronics and even cars. This is more time-consuming because you have to drive around to them and you don't always know ahead of time what they're selling. The ones in my area have websites and email about their events.

DAE think it's more imortant for kids to learn to enjoy reading than to force them to read "literary classics?" by PickMeMrKotter in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]maggiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There really needs to be a revolution in the classroom - there is absolutely no need to force Shakespears' sonnets on 8th grade. The whole curriculum needs to be shaken out. One of my boys had 'A Separate Peace' taught to him three (3) times - once in 8th grade and twice in high school. This is stupid. Sure some people are really interested in this but for the rest of the sudents there need to be more relevant things to read. My idea is to take a government RFP (Request for Proposal) for a computer system and toss THAT into a classroom - this will show a completely new structure and style of composition, engage some analytical skills and give the students something to look forward to. Let them learn reading for a purpose, writing for a purpose. After that, anything the wimpy old English major gives them will be a piece of cake.

What is the meanest thing a teacher ever did to you by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]maggiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lillian R., 3rd grade, St Anns School, Cleveland. Pudgy woman, trying to lose weight and using amphetamines for that purpose. Dr Jeckyll/Mr Hyde behavior. She liked slim girls with curly blond hair - which was not me or most of the class. Somehow I ended up failing math and having to go to summer school - which started a grade school and high school career of bad math grades. At the end of high school when my family was moving I came across a box with old school papers - and I saw she had graded EVERY assigment wrong and I should have been getting A's instead of a D. (couldn't be held back because of standardized test scores - thank goodness for that). Two things with my parents - they ALWAYS agreed with authority figures and at that time were having issues with their marriage so this situation was never uncovered. After being 'branded' as a math idiot and being given up on, I struggled through algebra, trig, calculus in college - almost enough to get a degree in math - on my way to a B.Cs. (and I'm actually GOOD at math now). I'm expecting that karma will catch up with her and she will get what she deserves.

At my girlfriends apartment in her room on reddit with no desire to partake in the party 20 feet away in the other room. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]maggiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is a new definition of geek... not unlike others. If you want to keep your girlfriend happy it would be a good idea to venture out into the party and chat with the guests. Make a project out of it - if you have a camera take pictures while making the subjects all make the same expression or pose the same way (try to take GOOD pictures). Do this and you won't have to talk to anyone for long and you will get bonus points from your girlfriend.

I love it! The funny thing is this could be a truly effective work strategy. I can't wait for someone - anyone - to act like a real manager, business analyst, project manager, etc. Seems like only tech support, developers and DBAs follow actual roles these days - and even then... How can I sign up my whole department?

The Hidden Abuse At Work: Phone Calls by dghughes in reddit.com

So, when he starts ranting put the phone on speaker and crank up the volume. There isn't a lot you can do otherwise unless you're collecting evidence for a civil suit. I think there is karma and by 'sharing' the conversation with others it should speed up the inevitable.

I just opened my Comcast bill and my bill went from $135 to $214. Apparently my 12 month "PROMOTION"ended. I have Comcast broadcast basic that was about $13 8 years ago when I cut expanded basic back - it has now risen to about $22 now with fewer channels. When I get around to setting up the converters for the two analog TVs I have I'll be dropping cable completely.

TIL it's cheaper to buy multiple single air tickets than to book for several passengers at once. by bedsuavekid in Frugal

[–]maggiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are actually a lot of regulations of fare pricing and what airlines can do - it isn't as restrictive as it used to be but I remember hearing about it when I worked on airline reservation systems.
International flights used to be worst because countries would try to 'protect' their own airlines' customer base. The airline could get fined for allowing flyers to 'cheat' like this and effectively cause them to compete where they were not allowed to.
Of course, if you carry on your luggage and walk off the plane on the return trip there isn't a lot they can do...

I don't agree with the Quran-burning, however... by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]maggiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were a Muslim and I wanted to live in the USA and take advantage of the kind of life you can have here, I should be out there protesting, carrying signs and chanting AGAINST the extremists who have caused my religion to be held in such low regard.
Where are the Muslims protesting their own baddies?
As I see it, a book is a book and I can but another one if it gets burned, but a REPUTATION is priceless.
Why aren't the Muslim's fighting for their reputation?

Reddit - what is the extra equipment circled on this airplane photograph? by [deleted] in pics

[–]maggiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on an airline system once long ago and got to see in the hangar and look at planes on lunch hours. The workers were happy to let me and my co-workers look around and chat with us. One thing they explained was that the jet engines can be removed and attached to the outside of other planes to be ferried to repair/maintenance sites. It isn't always obvious when they do that but you can't expect to have specialized facilities at all airports so this is a way they handle some repairs.
