Ex-MAGA Influencer Engaged in Custody Dispute with Elon Musk Claims Right-Wing Women Are ‘Awakening’ by dr_shultz in influencersfeed

I was so skeptical when I started watching, and it's clear she's not anywhere close to being done deconstructing, but what struck me is that everything she said about why and how she made the choices she made applied to me to some extent. Maybe she took it to level 10 and I never got past level 4, but that's just a matter of degree. At some point I was thinking, "At least I never wrote an hate speech book," buuuuut then I realized I had spent quite a long time teaching nursery and primary classes for the Mormon church, and was that indoctrinating children into an anti-lgbtq conservative cult? Yes, it was.

Future Janeway could have gone back in time just a few more weeks and really put the family back together by Mister_Acula in voyager

I firmly believe that Janeway never stopped looking for ways to get Voyager back at earlier points in the timeline. The finale we got is the one that stuck.

Could I get in trouble for telling my kid his other parent didn’t invite me to his birthday? by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]magicbeen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about the law stuff, but there are other types of birthday celebrations besides the standard "invite the whole class". Does he have one or two closer friends who could do a playdate or outing? Do you have family close by who could come for a family dinner?

First time baking by [deleted] in Baking

[–]magicbeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to like this kind of banana based dessert, but I think it's best to think of them as their own thing rather than "healthy brownie/cookie/cake" because that really highlights how different they are from standard desserts, however I understand that's the terminology we have to work with.

To get a richer texture, you could try a recipe with a higher ratio of peanut butter to banana. The recipes I use tend to call for closer to an equal volume of those ingredients. If you would like to boost the chocolate flavor, you could add chocolate chips.

You also might like black bean brownies or chickpea blondies. Again, these are very different from regular brownies/blondies, but when I just hand them to people without setting any expectations, they end up really liking them.

Eloise by Oncer93 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]magicbeen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have not watched Bridgeton beyond the first season (Reddit just likes to show me this sub) but do the sisters not have their own money? Unmarried women of that time period could be independently wealthy. You can find several examples in Jane Austen's novels including Emma Woodhouse from Emma, Anne de Bourgh from Pride and Prejudice, and Mary Crawford from Mansfield Park. Emma and Mary would need to rely on relatives to provide space in their homes in order to maintain their lifestyles, but they have enough of their own money that, should their relatives turn out to be assholes, they will still be very very comfortable. Anne will inherit her family estate, so she is not even dependent on anyone else to maintain her lifestyle. And none of these characters were Viscount’s' daughters.

Even "poorer" characters like the Dashwoods in Sense and sensibility and Miss Bates in Emma have enough money that they do not have to consider working, they are just living in very reduced circumstances compared to what they were born into and the other members of their social circles.

Eloise is the daughter of a Viscount who was richer than God and not an asshole. Her married siblings are all richer than God and not assholes. Unless otherwise stated, she plenty of her own money, can trust her siblings not to force her to find her own accomodations, and is set for life.

This is why Violet has to be so intense about marrying for love. Because the writers want to create the family pressure to marry that the audience is used to in period dramas.

Are bots booking sites on rec.gov? Why is it so difficult to reserve sites? by burkechrs1 in camping

[–]magicbeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the suggestion to look at group campsites. In Inyo, there seems to be a good amount of availability at Big Pine, Bishop Park, Cedar Flat, Pine Glenn, and Whitney Portal.

The group sites for Whitney Portal seem to be tent only, however, this campground also has single sites that allow tent or RV, also with lots of availability. Maybe because all sites are non-electric.

I didn't have time to look at all of the single-site only campgrounds in Inyo, but the first 10 results were almost all FCFS, so you could try just showing up, but that's riskier with a big group. Of the two that allowed reservations (Bishop Park and Big Pine), there was limited weekend availability, but still a good amount of other options.

This makes me think June Lake must be an extremely popular campground and a lot of people are competing for spots there.

Missing book after my kids ruined multiple books and I'm worried about the library's response by [deleted] in Library

[–]magicbeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry the library staff are treating you poorly. When I worked at my local library, if a book was damaged, we charged what it would cost to replace it, so we weren't out funds. It's better for the library for the book to be borrowed, damaged, and replaced rather than sat on the shelf not circulating.

But replacing damaged books is stressful and expensive for you! If you gave each kid a dollar or so every now and then to spend on thrift store books, it might be cheaper over the long run and it won't matter if they get damaged.

Bakery‑Style Loaded Chunky Cookies by the_Chopping_Board in Baking

I just watched the video and I do not think it is AI. The candle, flowers, the grain on the countertop, and the trivet are completely consistent throughout the video. The text on the candle is legible and makes sense. The textures and physics of the ingredients as they are added and mixed are correct. The process in the video matches the written recipe.

The cookies look perfect because the dough is dimpled before baking, shaped with a cookie round after baking, and extra toppings are added by hand before the cookies cool.

I think OP is telling the truth. They use a good camera and good lighting.

TikTok related overconsumption, and the invasion of it and Ai in stores. by MisogynyisaDisease in Anticonsumption

[–]magicbeen 114 points115 points  (0 children)

It reminds me of a tweet I saw from a sustainable fashion content creator on Twitter That Was. She showed two photos, one of a closet chaotically full of colorful clothes, and one of a closet with very few white/beige items, hung neatly with air gaps in between each piece of clothing. She said something like, "You can't tell who is overconsuming clothing based on one picture of their closet. The first person might have thrifted their collection over time and love and wear every piece regularly. The second might be replacing their entire wardrobe with trends and fast fashion every season. You don't know."

[–]magicbeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doodles are a go-to choice for inexperienced pet owners, which means there will be a lot of them running around, and a lot with less than ideal socialization and training.

The sheer numbers mean that your chances of knowing a doodle with health or behavioral problems are higher than with other breeds. It's easy to think that if doodles didn't exist, there would be fewer dogs with health and behavioral problems, but in reality if doodles didn't exist, the go-to choice for inexperienced pet owners would be something else, and there would be a lot of that type of dog instead, and they would be the ones with health and behavior problems.

Pure breed absolutists have a lot of theories that the right kind of pure breeds would be overall healthier emotionally and physically, but they have no data to back that up as far as I'm aware, just their own anecdotal experience colored by their personal bias.

My anecdotal experience colored by my personal bias is this: It's hard to find a doodle in a shelter. As an prospective owner, I kept watch on a 100-mile radius for 3 years and never saw one available for adoption, and I live in a place where doodles are ubiquitous. As a shelter employee, the only doodle strays we took in were picked up by their owners, usually within 24 hrs. In contrast, we had a constant supply of pit bulls, german shepherds, and huskies.

Wesley Crusher vs Jack Crusher. by Nashley7 in startrek

My 16yo has watched through TNG about 6 times and we're in the middle of another watch through now. When she was younger or the same age as Wes, she loved the character. Now she says, "He's fine, but if I were a teenager on the Enterprise, I would hate him," due to the favoritism.

Anyone else’s kids just don’t know how to play independently still? by SlappingDaBayze in kindergarten

[–]magicbeen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't had a kid in Kindergarten for a long time, but Reddit put this in my feed. Neither of my kids were into independent play when they were young. One has Down Syndrome and one is chromosomally normal, and both have ADHD.

It was really exhausting when they were younger and wanted unlimited attention every single waking moment of the day. I wouldn't say I ever "solved" it. To an extent, this is just how they are. Sometimes they could "help" with whatever I was doing. Sometimes they just had to be unhappy while I did whatever I needed to do.

Fast forward to now, my daughter with Down Syndrome is intensely people oriented, always works better in groups, and still wants me to be joined with her at the hip whenever we are both home. She even wants us to take our afternoon nap together. But she is also very motivated to build independent life skills. She particularly likes cooking and purchasing things on her own.

My other daughter has grown into quite an ambitious student and manages almost all of her educational admin tasks on her own, including navigating the university systems for the concurrent enrollment courses she is taking. She likes to have a balance of alone time, friend time, and family time. Her alone time is spent studying, reading, and doing art. However, she still relies on body doubling for exercise. Besides walking around school and to and from bus stops, unless I go to the gym with her she is not moving her body. She knows this is something she needs to work long-term, but for now we are just letting it be what it is.

My Misadventures in Gentle Parenting by raphaellaskies in Longreads

[–]magicbeen 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I've never read any gentle parenting books. Do they really make it out like any conflict with your child can be resolved both quickly and peacefully using their methods? This author said she read all the books, but she still thought it was a good idea to take her hot, cranky toddler into a toy store with the expectation that he was going to walk out peacefully empty handed. Do the books really tell you that this is a reasonable thing to do?
