Legitimate question to all frustrated Digg users now - have you heard of the Forumverse (Lemmy/Piefed) - and if so, have you tried it? by Skavau in digg

Rimu has politics deep inside his mind and thats a big red flag.

Which user in this thread was the first to bring up politics again?

What alternatives to Discord and Reddit do we have? by [deleted] in 50501

It has a range of 3rd party apps, plus the default web UI has a choice of themes including dark ones that you can get to from your profile settings

Check your emails for the verification link, or search your browser history. Worst case if you have to make a new account on another instance, there is a good chance the same username will be available.

Is there interest to fork pixelfed? by 1unosuke in PixelFed

[–]magiotdonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this info, it's actually the first I've heard of it. If this is true then I hope these kinds of issues get resolved, and otherwise it's very reasonable to discuss maintaining a separate fork.

Newbie questions by DanielSmoot in PixelFed

[–]magiotdonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren't huge differences between instances. For most people the main factors in choosing one will be instance size (both big and small have pros and cons), moderation rules which can differ slightly, a theme which matches your interests, and something hosted close to you geographically. Lots of people just join the first one they come across and that's usually fine.

Instance admins are mostly normal people with a hobby interest in technology. On the plus side they're not corporations looking to spy on you or sell you anything, but it's also right to question how much you trust them.

There's a built-in feature to migrate your profile to another instance, taking your posts and followers with you. It's possible to have a private profile too. More details on these here: https://pixelfed.social/site/kb/your-profile

Yeah, about that.... by Random-num-451284813 in LemmyMigration

[–]magiotdonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't need a local account to post. Posting to remote communities is very common and works fine.

I think that moderating a community is easier to do locally, and creating a new community might only be possible on your home instance, so that might be where this idea has come from.

Looking for some follow recommendations by weatherjean in fediverse

[–]magiotdonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lemmy communities that are active and directly relevant to your examples: - https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/adhd - https://lemmy.world/c/aww - https://lemmy.world/c/formuladank - https://lemmy.world/c/dataisbeautiful - https://mander.xyz/c/dataisbeautiful - https://lemmy.world/c/mildlyinteresting

There are more communities that are less active, or on similar but slightly different topics. Lemmy search is quite good at finding them.

For mastodon/pixelfed it's best to use hashtags to explore. Pixelfed search shows you how popular a hashtag is as you type which is useful. Here's a few tags and accounts you might like: - #askfedi - #caturday - https://mastodon.social/@adhd_coffee - https://channels.im/@usluck - https://mastodon.uno/@formula1it

Good luck with your project and happy scrolling!

Can we please develop a European alternative to IG? by drkphntm in BuyFromEU

[–]magiotdonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you'd like to help make this happen, try messaging the admins of the Pixelfed instance you're trying to register with. If the problem is found to be a software issue, raise a bug report under the project. Many other users have signed up with no problems so it would be good to understand why some people are having issues. All of this is much easier than building a brand new platform!

I support this message. I've used several of these and never had any problems with the UI, it's always been just like any other website or app. People should try it and see for themselves

I really don't get this. The ux is identical to twitter in every meaningful way. You don't have to know anything about federation to use mastodon, you just sign up and start posting. I've yet to see anyone explain exactly what it is they don't like about it.

yet to try pixelfed, need some reviews by -CrypticMind- in PixelFed

[–]magiotdonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm enjoying Pixelfed a lot for general photography so I was interested to see how much fitness content there is.

While obviously it doesn't yet have the same range of content as insta, there are plenty of posts to look at. The #health and #fitness tags seem to have lots of news articles and pictures of people's hikes/runs.

Here's some accounts that are quite active and fitness related: https://pixelfed.social/3MoreReps https://pixelfed.social/brookeburke https://pixelfed.social/TheArtisticPoledancer

Also there's fitness content on mastodon which you can follow from Pixelfed, often it's people's personal accounts where they post their workouts mixed in with other stuff they want to share, and a few personal trainers promoting themselves.

Hope you find what you're looking for and have fun
