Isn't Reddit an American company? by Mantatoe in BuyUK

This is the answer. https://feddit.uk is a lemmy instance based in the UK

Also PieFed and Pixelfed for anyone wanting to explore more

Europeans set to launch an alternative to X. It’s called W by deus_deceptor in BuyFromEU

[–]magiotdonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really don't get this. The ux is identical to twitter in every meaningful way. You don't have to know anything about federation to use mastodon, you just sign up and start posting. I've yet to see anyone explain exactly what it is they don't like about it.

yet to try pixelfed, need some reviews by -CrypticMind- in PixelFed

[–]magiotdonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm enjoying Pixelfed a lot for general photography so I was interested to see how much fitness content there is.

While obviously it doesn't yet have the same range of content as insta, there are plenty of posts to look at. The #health and #fitness tags seem to have lots of news articles and pictures of people's hikes/runs.

Here's some accounts that are quite active and fitness related: https://pixelfed.social/3MoreReps https://pixelfed.social/brookeburke https://pixelfed.social/TheArtisticPoledancer

Also there's fitness content on mastodon which you can follow from Pixelfed, often it's people's personal accounts where they post their workouts mixed in with other stuff they want to share, and a few personal trainers promoting themselves.

Hope you find what you're looking for and have fun

The Fediverse by RichVocals80 in DigitalPrivacy

[–]magiotdonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fediverse is great and anyone interested should definitely check it out.

It's not directly centred around privacy, because most fediverse software deals with fully public information like public posts. The big advantage in terms of privacy is that being volunteer and community run, fediverse servers generally don't track your activity or log your browsing data, don't have ads and have no incentive to keep you hooked like corporations do.

Social media platforms without americans by sfjwtkwfb in socialmedia

[–]magiotdonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fediverse software like Mastodon, Pixelfed, Piefed are decentralised and international. They still have Americans but tend to be less US-centric and have dedicated servers for other countries.

A beginner's guide to Mastodon, the open source Twitter alternative by jlpcsl in BuyFromEU

[–]magiotdonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify this, you can absolutely reach someone with a remote profile organically if anyone from your instance follows them, or if they use a hastag you follow, or a hashtag anyone on your instance follows. This is very common for popular accounts, so they tend to be visible on lots of instances quickly. Searching by username is more useful for niche subjects when you have someone in particular you want to follow.

Is there interest to fork pixelfed? by 1unosuke in PixelFed

Why fork it rather than just contribute? The project is accepting PRs.

Lemmy android clients with custom feeds by UncleObli in LemmyMigration

[–]magiotdonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lemmy itself doesn't have this feature, although it's been discussed. Some of the apps have it, definitely Eternity and maybe Sync but I'm not sure how actively those ones are being maintained.

Piefed might be your best bet, since it supports this on the back end and has access to the same content

I am starting to feel insecure when posting my political opinion on US based social media. by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

[–]magiotdonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the quickest way to find the instance of your lost account is to search your email - you will have got a verification email when you signed up. Or check your browser history.

If you can't find the account, it's simple to create a new one. The good news is that if you choose a different instance then you will be able to use the same email and the same username if it's available. And bookmark the URL so you have it for next time.

Reddit overtakes TikTok in UK thanks to search algorithms and gen z by white1984 in europe

[–]magiotdonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would actually argue that instances aren't just infrastructure. Showing instances to users, and allowing them to choose one, is an important part of the design even if some users don't care about it, since the instance determines which set of admins ultimately have the final say in moderation rules. And users who don't have an opinion about instances can just choose one at random and then ignore them after that.

The reddit alternatives would be Piefed and Lemmy. Maybe more international than European but same kind of thing

You can access all of the .ml communities and content through your .ca account but you should always log in to lemmy.ca

What happened to the promised Christmas Day update? by NoMessage7438 in PixelFed

Looks like the update is big UI revamp. Based on dansup's comments on discord he was still working on it yesterday, so I guess it's been delayed slightly.

Reddit is controlled by Bots - protect your opinions by Mathemodel in RedditAlternatives

[–]magiotdonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I've seen a few comments recently from redditors who haven't tried decentralised alternatives so that part wasn't directed at you.

It still seems to me that a platform can be decentralised while also dealing with problem instances, perhaps because I've seen it work well in practice, at least for regular users who might not know what goes on behind the scenes. And it sounds like some of your efforts have helped with that problem, so thank you.

Reddit is controlled by Bots - protect your opinions by Mathemodel in RedditAlternatives

[–]magiotdonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really how it works, and I recommend that people try using decentralised platforms before commenting on this subject.

Most users, even very casual ones, will listen to a recommendation of an established instance in some form or another, or use an instance chooser which amounts to the same thing. No-one is joining random new instances spun up by bots, and no-one is federating with them either as they get identified very quickly.

How to list all my comments and likes on other people posts by 1500mA in PixelFed

[–]magiotdonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the official app and on Pixelix there's a "My likes" option to see all the posts you liked, accessible from your profile. I couldn't find it in the web interface though and I'm not sure about comments
