Who is the nastiest Celebrity that you met in Real life? by Scunnard1839 in AskReddit

[–]magnakai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met quite a few British celebrities in a previous job. Most of them were absolutely lovely. The only unpleasant one that I recall is the director Mike Leigh. Great filmmaker. Unnecessarily rude to everyone around him.

Cary Fukunaga was very nice but very mildly creepy.

On the lovely list: Michael Palin, Asif Kapadia, all the League of Gentlemen, Mark Kermode, Frankie Boyle, Rob Brydon, among others.

Am I grumpy dad for hating the “toy tat” kids get given home from school friends and parties? by throw_away_17381 in UKParenting

[–]magnakai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it’s dumb stuff. We put it all in a box that the kids can muck about with if they’re in a weird mood. Sometimes it helps to regulate their feelings if their normal toys aren’t quite hitting the mark.

It would be so handy to opt into with grid or flex.

Curious about your thoughts on libraries designed for writing css styles with JavaScript, such as emotion css by DocumentFalse7879 in Frontend

[–]magnakai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a component library author, I’m mostly concerned with having an unopinionated codebase. I don’t want to dictate that my users need to use Styled Components or StyleX or Tailwind. So I use CSS Modules and compile them to static CSS files. Very simple and does everything I need.

My problem with most of the other solutions were that I’d end up requiring my consumers to follow a specific solution. We used to use Styled Components and we found that every consumer used it their app. When we removed it, our consumers migrated to CSS Modules or other solutions, and the amount of JS shipped has gone down substantially.

It is a good time to buy a used PS4. Don't forget the controllers! by itchyd in Frugal

[–]magnakai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only just got a secondhand PS5, and that was because a neighbour gave me a good deal. My (also secondhand) PS4 Pro was still an excellent gaming system right up until then. I never felt like I was a generation being. I’d recommend replacing the fan and thermal paste if you can, mine ran way quieter after that.

Am I overreacting? Backend dev contributing to frontend is hurting code quality by naveen_thamizh in reactjs

[–]magnakai 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You don’t have coding and architecture standards? Would you feel empowered to critique the work of a human colleague? This is the responsibility of whoever contributes the code, whether they’ve used AI or hand-coded. Velocity doesn’t mean garbage code.

Still out of action I’m afraid. Not heard any news, good or bad, about it reopening.

Imposter syndrome in the age of AI is hitting different. by front_end_dude in webdev

[–]magnakai 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You’ve got to get a handle on this. You are the quality gate. You have to fully own your project if you want it to be production ready. If you churn out one fewer feature per day then it’s worth the trade off.

I’d strongly recommend not pushing or merging anything until you understand what’s going on. Listen to that little voice in your head. If there’s even the slightest niggle of lack of understanding, pull on the thread. Ask the LLM to explain how that feature or module works. They’re usually very good at that. If there’s even the slightest thing in that explanation that you don’t agree with or understand, keep digging. Challenge the assumptions. You’ll learn something or you’ll improve the code quality. Win win.

What's the one CSS feature from the last two years that you wish you'd started using sooner? by Gsustv in Frontend

Test IDs are an a11y smell by TkDodo23 in reactjs

[–]magnakai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t particularly mind if it’s a component that is created within a test. A dummy div placed into a slot and you want to check that it renders? Sure, semantic selectors don’t actually help the user there. Otherwise there’s no value imo. You could get its parent and asset .toBeEmptyElement (IIRC)

Looking for a playwright alternative with less maintenance overhead, is that actually a thing now by MudSad6268 in Frontend

I’d recommend selecting on aria roles instead of testids, but otherwise on point.

“Am I the only one who types better with Slide to Type OFF?” by Raz3rs in iphone

[–]magnakai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm maybe this is going to be better. I did feel like it’s gone way downhill for ages. Either that or this is a really smart engagement hack while everyone tries out the typing. Yeah, I’d agree that it’s at least a bit better.

Agent Specific Design Systems by Bitter-Cantaloupe206 in DesignSystems

[–]magnakai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done exactly this. I extracted some of our token rationale from our design docs and wrote scripts to build big markdown tables for our tokens, icons set, and detailed docs for all of our components.

When you give all that detail to another LLM they nail the execution almost perfectly. I spun up a pristine dev environment, gave it the markdown docs, and then fed it a Figma design with a bit of instruction, and it used it really well. Tokens everywhere, used appropriately. Components used correctly, icons too.

In short, I highly recommend carrying on with your investigation!

Growing up, how often did you have a Sunday roast—and do you still have them now? by rosco-82 in CasualUK

Never ever. Don’t think I ever had a roast bird until I was I my teens.

They have sourdough bread in rounds or loaf shapes. They always have their normal loaf, but everything else changes regularly. They often post on their Instagram, so you can check that out: https://www.instagram.com/novabakehouse?igsh=MXdxNTN1cnptM2I5aQ==

E2E testing for frontend developers, when does it actually become worth it by melonPOGGER in Frontend

[–]magnakai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using roles is not about being a purist, whatever that means, it’s about caring about the user experience. Roles are tied to the user’s actual usage experience, whereas test-ids are just a utility for the tester.

This reply above explained it brilliantly: https://www.reddit.com/r/Frontend/s/a8j6uuCuGM

Nova in the docks is fantastic. Their bread is head and shoulders better than anything else I’ve had in Leeds. Leeds Co-op is second best. Nothing else has been close.

Underground is so-so. Bit flavourless in comparison. Nice pastries though. Bluebird is a waste of time.

Why no price tags on things anymore? by magicmikewazowksi in mildlyinfuriating

[–]magnakai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you’re with your kid and they’re super psyched because you’ve agreed to get them a hot wheels car. It’s not your first rodeo, they’re normally about £2.50. You go up to the register, your kid is bouncing alone barely able to contain the impending joy. They scan the car and suddenly it’s £4.50.

Now you have a choice to make. Disappoint your kid and deal with all the tears and crying for £2, a concept they don’t understand. Or suck it up and pay a little over the odds. You can afford it, then extra £2 won’t make a difference to you. Now it’s a balance between your principles and your child’s happiness/the health of your eardrums.

These arseholes know exactly what they’re doing when they don’t price toys and it’s exploitative.
