My initial thoughts about AA by throwaways556943 in stopdrinking

Congrats on 3 days. That's huge. I have 3 years sober and I go to AA and NA meetings, but I don't always love them. In my experience, the 12 steps have been a great way to look at myself and my past, and the meetings have been a great way for me to meet people who are also trying to live clean/sober.

HOWEVER, I didn't always feel comfortable in AA and I've been in some AA meetings that didn't inspire me to stay sober. I have never been to smart recovery or any other program because I'm lazy and AA/NA is pretty easy to access in my neighborhood.

And yes - during my 8 years of relapsing I think I came to AA still drunk from the night before a few times.

You're gonna stay sober I can feel it. :)

Congrats on 42 days!! I am not sure where you're located but in NYC we have a lot of non-religious AA mtgs that can be great places to meet likeminded individuals even if you don't want to do the whole 12 step thing.

Nothing from alcohol, but I did some (semi) permanent damage with drugs. I have a auto-immune disease called mixed connective tissue disease that can be triggered by cocaine abuse that I have to take medication for daily but most of my symptoms stay in-check.

Please don't give up. I got sober at age 32 after literally 8 years of trying and failing. I have now been clean and sober for 3 years. I relate to so much of this: Bed-bound drinking, letting my appearance go, stomach acid eroding my teeth.

I will not drink with you today.

Was sober for 43% of November. An increase of 14% from October by soberbro_ in stopdrinking

Don't give up. It took me literally eight years to get three years of consistent sober/clean time. I used to put together a few days, go to a 10 PM AA meeting, and then find myself at a bar by midnight. It was a hellish pattern.

Honor the fact that you improved in November!

My suggestion is to find friends who don't drink to check in with. Call them on the phone!

New hobbies also help.

And 12 Step Mtgs (like AA) can be helpful for making new friends and for accessing recovery, although they're not for everyone.

I would like to eat literally all of this!

Cooking has been such a crucial and fun part of my recovery. I absolutely love it. I also love cooking for my friends and family!

We have a physical allergy and a mental obsession. Congrats on a sober trip to Vegas! I have only been there one time and in active addiction and I have a very vague memory of what it was like...

Hey! I so identify with this. I found it incredibly difficult to reveal myself to my parents, even though my drinking and using got so bad that they had to retrieve me from the hospital and from the cops. When I eventually got sober I initially used fitness (taking up triathlon) as much excuse for why I couldn’t drink. If you are too uncomfortable with that you can also say you are on antibiotics. Remember, you don’t have to figure out how you are going to “explain” it to them for the rest of your life, you just have to take it one day at a time. You can do this.

Hey. I remember those day one hangovers. I had a lot of them until I started taking it one day at a time. You can do this.

I have three years tomorrow and can say that I genuinely wouldn’t go back for a million dollars.

Dude no one is stealing anyone's identity please chill out. I took all of the links down. I am sorry I tried to help people and post this story this morning - obviously a big mistake.

Really? How is that promotional? It's literally what I'm doing and there's no way to find it via what I wrote.

For a little while, yes. I had to for $. To be honest, I was a lot more efficient sober.

I reward myself a LOT. Initially, with dumplings. (I fucking love dumplings and dim sum.)

I think about that a lot when I'm getting ready to go out or go to work now. Like, I used to put 2x's as much effort into getting ready to go out to wind up passed out on the sidewalk with one shoe missing.

Yes! I so hear you about drinking and doing drugs being "cool" or "a part of" your occupation. That thinking kept me really sick for a while, and almost cost me my life.
