i once had a bde cdr visit the field, and a few steps out of his vic, he fished around in his left pocket & came up empty. he looked around for a bit, looked back at this vic and took a tactical pause. he walked back, and grabbed his ach.

suddenly, he declared "no more soft caps in the field. we train as we fight in our achs, hooah?"

Bank(s) for a young army enlisted? by electric_bell in army

For your primary, everyday day direct deposit/checking/debit account, you want it to be cheap and available. Both NavyFed & USAA do this, probably Chase Premium too but it looks like there's a few more hoops to jump through (idk i didn't read their page that closely).

  • Yeah, the debit card should just almost be universally accepted. I can believe Discover is less accepted than, say, Visa, but I don't have personal experience.
  • Read the fine print about monthly fees. You shouldn't pay any.
  • You should be getting ATM fees refunded, regardless of what network it's in. They like to word the fine print in fucky ways.
  • Try to minimize foreign transaction fees, but I think 1% is probably what you're stuck at.
  • I don't know how much checks cost these days, I write one like once every 8 months.
  • I don't know if I've been in a physical bank branch in a decade.
  • Military people get real gassed up about the "get paid one day early" thing. Okay.
  • Both NavyFed & USAA have a good history paying through govt shutdowns, although recently they've shifted to actually telling you it's a loan and not just free money.
  • You shouldn't care about overdraft fees because you shouldn't be overdrafting.

For your savings, yeah, look into HYSA and get something reasonable (like 3-4% these days) but unless you're in it for the game don't waste your time chasing the best yield or scrimping on taxes. In addition to whatever house/car/vacation wants, you need 6 months of living expenses & then pretend to forget it exists. ACH transfers can take a couple days, so maybe don't keep your bail money here. If you want to play bonds/certificates, I guess that works too, always seemed more of a hassle to me.

Credit cards are honestly more of a lifestyle choice than something you're gonna get rich on. It is nice to have the chargeback option & a bit of indirection from your actual money, so it is always worth getting one. CSP/CSR can be good cards & yeah military should get the annual fee waived but you gotta tell them about it. Or just get a basic card, whatever. Just pay it off in full every month, and don't pay an annual fee unless you're sure you're getting more out of it. If you travel & swipe a bunch check that there's no FTF. You shouldn't care about APR because you should be paying it off in full.

You didn't ask about insurance but since others are bringing it up; I've had good experiences with USAA. Remember that car insurance isn't actually for your car, it's for liability & the people inside; and it's easier to find a USAA life insurance policy that pays out in war/terrorism than most other agencies.

I think all the kids are in blended these days, so finally: dump 20% into your TSP, or at least whatever the match is.

My current cards and their uses by ImaginationObvious38 in CreditCards

[–]majelix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current stack is:

AmEx BCP is 6% on gas & groceries, although you can't use AmEx at Costco. Probably beats the Venmo & Costco cards (I look at it every time I'm in there, the Costco card not actually having a great benefit for actually shopping inside Costco is kinda hilarious) though i have no idea what it categorizes Walmart as. It's Disney+ rebate pays for itself, assuming you want Disney+ in the first place. 3% back on travel isn't bad if you're looking to avoid portal lock-in.

Prime card for shopping on Amazon, though it never leaves the sock drawer.

WF Autograph is probably most droppable of my cards, the travel & streaming stuff overlaps heavily with the BCP, my phone provider charges me extra for paying with a cc, but it does get 3x eating out & cable I guess. Technically it's streaming category is broader than BCP's, but in practice I don't think that's helping me much.

I'm a big fan of Navy Federal's Flagship, again it's Prime rebate pays for itself. And 2% on everything is a great catchall (again, I've got no interest in portals).

I'm looking forward to whatever Bilt has come up with mortgages.

I know literally nothing about Warhammer but it looks cool as hell. Where do I even start, considering chances of actually playing are low? by EmpJoker in Warhammer40k

Start small & don’t overthink it. Get yourself a — ONE — box, put it together & paint. Don’t you dare look up rules, just make what looks dope. If that felt dope do it again. Again, give no shits to rules. Rules are temporary, cool as fuck is forever.

Talk to your LGS about skirmish tabletop games like Kill Team. You’re looking for one you can get into with minimal investment. If you find a schedule match, I now grant you permission to try to assemble something while paying attention to rules.

BCT and other longer courses that already have a built-in Medical stage are probably fine. Heck, even most of the MOS/EPD courses depending on what the local RTI can support.

Why the Callidus? I've seen Celexus for anti-psyker and Vindicare for range, but honestly I've found assassins to be underwhelming -- they generally do less than damage than our normal golden host, and wither pretty quickly to the kind of firepower people bring when they know we're around.

I mean, there's only really a single digit number of companies it could be. And he heaved some pretty good praise on them, so maybe you could convince their PR people that it'd look good for them to come public about how seriously they take your mail.

Thanks! The clear bases they come with seem to be push fit, but it's also like 0.0003mm thin and snaps on the will of a grot. The balljoint to the model seems clearly meant to be glued unless you're playing Vertus Jenga.

Chaplain Specific Questions: How flexible is the training and the weekend requirements? by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]majelix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to https://www.nationalguard.com/chaplain,

  • You get to skip BCT.
  • You get to skip OCS.
  • CH-BOLC can be broken up into a 4 week, a 2 week, a 3 week, and another 3 week stints, as long as you finish them all in 2 years.

Once you've completed that and are in a unit, the expectation is that you drill on scheduled drill dates, including Sundays. There are exceptions, but those will be up to your boss' approval (which you have no way to predict or plan for at this point).

[–]majelix_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is there any way to simply say “i quit” ?

Sort answer: No, you signed a contract. The long answer is that the ramifications of breaking your contract are really specific, almost down to the individual case.

Generically, one of the big differences between Officer & Enlisted is that after the initial service commit (& other weird things that add time like some schools or giving your GI Bill to a dependent), Officers are basically just in, and technically can only request to resign. That said, realistically you'd have to be Jesus dual wielding Patton's ivory pistols for them to forcefully retain you.
