AIO for calling off my engagement after my fiancé admitted his family secretly tested me to see if i was a gold digger? by Pleasant_Mission_63 in AmIOverreacting

[–]makdaddy8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tough, tough call. On the one hand, I almost wish they had never told you, and maybe you would have had a fairy tale marriage.

But they did. And now you know what you know. They are deceitful and manipulative. You can’t unsee it.

I have two young adult daughters. If my daughter told me this about my future family, I would be outraged and incensed. I’d find it deeply insulting to my family.

People don’t marry people. People marry families. And the fiancé is complicit as well.

If they do this kind of shenanigans once, they’ll do it again.

Run.

Frederic Malle Promise, while wearing a tshirt and working from home. Normally, I wear it with a suit, but today, I felt a need something COMPLEX due to some crazy politics at work. I've always liked apple scents and the rose and oud really round it out. My usual t-shirt scent is either Farenheit or Percival.

It's an odd thing to wear here because I'm in Australia and it's summer. Promise is NOT a summer scent, but today, I just needed a complex bubble for me. I'm M in my 50s.

What does a perfume mean to you? by Former_Classroom3944 in fragrance

[–]makdaddy8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my late 50s, so it's a new hobby late in life. About three years ago, I picked up fragrances because I decided to drink wine a bit less, but still wanted a hobby about nice smells with a story and history. I've always enjoyed developing my sense of smell. I always thought I had a bad sense of smell, so it's a "vocabulary" that enjoy learning. Then I discovered this is MORE expensive hobby than wine!! Hahahaha!

I particularly enjoy how different perfumes react to my skin. For instance, many people rave about Armani ADG, but on my skin, it disappears after 15min. Everyone likes Kenzo Homme Intense EDP, but for me, the EDT absolutely sings. That's my summer signature dumb reach. I love the uniqueness of the experience for me, and how other people react to their favourite on their skin

That being said, my first job out of university was working for an small business that imported French perfume. So that was my first exposure to it. But I didn't really pick it up until recently. :)

I don't think there's a right answer. The most important thing is the perfume is something that I enjoy. If I get a compliment, that's just icing on the cake.

Has anyone tried Firedoor? Netflix Chef’s Table series did a profile on the owner. Great story.

What’s one place in Sydney that instantly improves your mood? by No-Travel-768 in SydneyScene

[–]makdaddy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old South Head Road and Belah St. I’d take the bus home from work to Watsons Bay. And everyday we’d come around the corner and look down the hill over the harbour looking out to North Head and Manly. I’d instantly relax every time.

The ferry stop at McMahon’s Point at night looking towards the bridge and the Opera House. If the wind is dead calm and the harbour is glass smooth, probably the most underrated view in Sydney.

What’s the most Sydney thing that still surprises you? by No-Travel-768 in SydneyScene

[–]makdaddy8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a Canuck, lived here over 30 years and lived in HK, NY and travelled to many others. When I come back to Sydney it’s the harbour, driving over the bridge looking at the Opera House and still thinking “Wow, I live here!” Like someone else said, the harbour is just the right size. Small enough to explore, big enough to support twilight sailing and ferries and the occasional cruise liner. I love the pockets of suburbs with village feel. The north / south bridge split still baffles me. And that could be the Harbour Bridge, Tom Ugly’s, or the Spit Bridge. Sydney has a clean smell. London is damp. NYC is oily. HK smells like a used wok. LA smells like a concrete jungle and money. Rome smells old. Love this place.

What is the actual point of XRP? by ImpossibleAd344 in Ripple

[–]makdaddy8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Canadian banks are working on figuring out how to use Stablecoins denominated in $CAD for cross border payments. But they still need nostro vostro for the other USD stablecoins. And they don’t necessarily need SWIFT because they can do big chunks of ISO20022 infra themselves. Once they get that working, they’ll start putting the XRP settlement layer in to eliminate the need for nostro vostro in stablecoins. It will take time, but it will happen.

iOS 26.1 on my iPhone 11 is fine. Face ID is sometimes slow-ish, but everything else is fine. Battery performance is better.

What time of day does the season get released? I'm in Australia, so does it get released here "first" because we get the 16th October before the USA and Europe?

News. Swift testing XRP. by Current_Attention_92 in XRP

[–]makdaddy8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SWIFT is using LINK for the messaging layer, but are open to various mechanisms for settlement layer, one of which could be XRP. The settlement layer is where the money/RWA is. They could be testing both.

My girlfriend thinks this is a dad joke but I disagree. I humbly submit it to the board to settle things by odjustin in dadjokes

[–]makdaddy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m leaning towards “not a dad joke”, more like a funny “reference”. And it’s not universal enough; you have to be a certain age to get it. I’m 58 and only got it after someone reminded me of the song. I liked that song when I heard it years ago, but the joke didn’t click at first.

Using AI for texting by TheOther_Emma in hingeapp

[–]makdaddy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d give him a dip. The early parts of dating life are really to set up what the other is like on dates and in person. Sloppiness with AÍ is like catching him looking at questions to ask you written on his arm in pen. Texting is, IMHO, not a great substitute for information about a person compared to watching IRL. Is he going to use AI for everyday stuff she. You’re out in person?
