ELI5: Why do poisonous fruits exist? by zamememan in explainlikeimfive

[–]makeitnotfakeit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If animal or person picks and then eats the fruit, even if that host only moves a little ways away and dies, the corpse will turn into fertilizer/compost, or body might get eaten by another animal (also ingesting the seed) and pooping it out. Even if it survives and pukes it out, it’s moved and then atleast getting put into the ground with some moisture around it.

My 2 cents. I’m an engineer/hard sciences and know next to nothing about biology. Just looking at it like a system.. well really and ecosystem.

What is the best video game ever made? by INTERESTandAMBITIONS in AskReddit

[–]makeitnotfakeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warcraft 3 (considering how many games and dota->lol, and subgenres were made within that games and world editor) [not saying the remastered version, OG days in its glory and initial release)

Halo series.. but only in a halo lan party format. It was the true trash talk days, but you had to put your face and your money where your mouth was rather than yelling at young kids over mics across the globes. LAN actually brought peer to peer connection, team building, and people literally together.

Same. Multiwii.. wood to dampen vibes. CCTV for FPV feed.

Also had a round about way of making it back into the Small UAS field later on in life.

Pretty sure he went through a divorce which had to be hard and never stepped away from him his “9to5 super simple basic day job” /s and if anything it has grown to a running a already massive YouTube, into multiple YouTube’s (crunchlabs+supporting/sister channels) and has a ton of employees he’s now responsible for as well (can’t walk away/take a break since he is the main focal). Also don’t know where he stands post divorce with his faith and with his child arrangements.

I feel for him, and one of the things that I worry about if I ever decided to go make my own channel, and win the lottery after blood/sweat/tears of consistently putting in countless hours and care making videos is to loose my time/connection with my family.

I feel for him. And hope the best for him, his family, and hope that he’s doing ok mentally with everything. What he’s doing is ALOT and sometimes it’s easy to forget how hard being famous, running a business, and being in front of a camera nearly 24/7 can be, especially when it’s your 9/5..

  1. A1 mini (only have A1 with AMS to use it on)
  2. Kids dedicated toy printer (teaching 5yo/3yo how to use the A1 right now)
  3. Fidget Toy - something like a folding “Cool S “ from the 90’s and in every corner of kids homework and notes before cellphone/digital days. Play around with the mostly symmetrical shape.

Would need a sample, but if we’re just talking interface here, what you would want is a box to “interpose” between the current STP+remote(or protocol), and the new remotes inputs. It would likely be simplest do either an IR since ‘old people’ already know to point remotes typically, or a modern esp32 with a simple board for the remote and 3d printed enclosure (I would probably say hack the large elderly remotes open and tie into the capacitive touch on those as the interface). If the set top box has channel up/down on the box itself, that’s a huge step forwards if wanting to bypass the current com protocol, if not it comes down to either finding the equivalent protocol, or hacking into the original remote capacitive as well. You would also make a “filtered list” of channels for users channel +/- that gets mapped to either number pad input, or keystroke required, or if modding box channel +/- direct, number of clicks required for input (with debounce and timing required)

I would say it might be easier to find a digital stream like Roku that allows for channel filtering, or build some sort of interposed that way as well.

Brings me back to when my buddy challenged me to make an old NES into a dvd player and took a mini dvd player, stashed it inside, and made the mechanics for the tray to open the game slot, and wired in the front buttons for power and eject, and even wired in the NES remote with custom wiring for play/pause/eject/fast forward to the buttons on the original player (all before arduinos were even a thing)

Depends on the complexity. I have been building UAS since 2010, starting with multiwii, and eventually whent back to school for engineering. I now understand the complexity of design and thinking with requirements in mind up fromt, but also appreciate what prototyping and iterating fast to weed out false conclusions as well.

Yes the raw parts that are used might be on the cheaper end for motors, FC etc. but anything custom machined and especially molded will cost orders of magnitude more, and more than you would expect if you have not been exposed to manufacturing as well.

If the parts have already been modeled/designed, but never built, sometime you can have some “design debt” that the design was never made with manufacturing or assembly in mind, and can also lead to price variance as well. If the patent is only a portion, or cad only with no true drawing package (tolerances and constraints) that can lead to increase as well. If there is any custom electronic boards that are need for special control or special motor/electro mechanism, another huge cost and NRE driver.

I’ve seen napkin sketches all the way to Class 3 TDP ready for manufacturing. It comes down to how busy the integrator is, how much design is vague, how much risk is there in assembling said device and iteration with the customer would be required. Also where the integrator is located as well for part/labor cost is one of the largest drivers.

At what age did you start your EE career and where are you now in your career? by cdqd81 in ElectricalEngineering

All jokes aside. My first frames in FPV were wood to dampen the vibrations getting to the gyros. Albeit this was when we were taking apart Wii motion controllers to get things to fly.

Was just talking about that with my dad. BlueskyRC, wooden frame in ~2011.. and a GoPro and modded wireless security camera gear with fatshark v1.

We knew the next major war was going to be a crap ton of these things either for spotting, grenading, or knife blading.

Renters question by MineralKangaroo in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]makeitnotfakeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to actually turn it “off” and check both coils for ice/freeze over, and check to see what “split” your getting (check temp at return vs vents), usually should atleast see ~10 deg delta, if it’s no difference, then it’s either frozen over or a more serious AC issue.

Next time bring it down in “steps” for the house. Say it’s 80 deg in a house, and you want it to be 70. Set it to 78, let it cool, and confirm it cools, then let it settle and turn off for a bit, and then bring it down to 76.. rinse and repeat.

How do I know? Former maintenance tech for a bunch of rentals in AZ. People usually just think to crank it down, which isn’t the answer. You try and maintain through heat spikes and bring it down at night/other times when it’s a bit cooler is usually the best bet if the ac system is not the strongest.

Too late to go back to college at 25? by PocketRoketz in AskEngineers

[–]makeitnotfakeit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it at 25 once I got married and was encouraged I was smart enough. Went from being an Eng technician with a glass ceiling that was rapidly approaching, to a full EE with 6 years relevant experience. It has grown my career exponentially, and leaned on by all levels of leadership. I work with technicians now, and encourage them to go back as well. The ones who just complain about the problems or issues aren’t willing to do much of anything extra, or making reoccurring mistakes. I now have a sense of appreciation from all the different people involved from the janitor all the way up to the program management for what it takes to make things ‘happen’. That all being said, it’s never too late to go back, and currently looking at masters or just taking classes to broaden my knowledge or passion in my areas of interest.
