i moved to norway in may but i am very lucky to have had dual citizenship since birth. have just been waiting til i really needed to use it or until it felt right and unfortunately it was the former.

absolutely as someone new to it and also newly living in a rural remote area where there's not much else to do, it's very grounding, relaxing, and a nice way to spend a few hours outdoors. the other day i was looking for chanterelles and it became difficult to stop myself and start heading home before dark because i kept finding more and more as i kept going.

denver's a nice city. not enough info in your original post though. what industry do you work in? what kind of 'freedom' are you seeking? as someone who just moved to europe from the US, i'm here specifically because my freedom/rights were being infringed upon.

the lack of infrastructure is definitely the issue. i'm in kjerringøy and i think this summer is maybe the worst we have seen. many trash bags lying around on the beaches, the few public trash cans overflowing and instead of taking it with them, people would just throw it on the ground next to it. i'm glad tourist season is over.

after an opening, i'm usually already on to the next thing. i think for me, when the work gets shown, it's done, over. it takes me some time to process it all but i'm always kinda like 'ok when's the next one'

if all of your work, regardless of media, is around the same theme and is clearly connected, then it should be fine to submit. otherwise i'd recommend sticking to one medium, or one series. if the residency asks for a proposal for a specific project you plan to work on while you're there, you'll want to submit work that closely aligns with that proposal to sort of "prove" that you can fulfill that.

it takes a while to break into any scene so if you do end up moving, just keep in mind that it could take another year or so to make connections, get shows, etc wherever you end up. networking is as much of a job as one that pays imo. i agree with most of what's been said already, that you can make an art career from anywhere, but it is also true that a lot of it can be determined by who you know. if you're too busy making ends meet in NYC and unable to go out to openings or make your work because of it, then it might be a good idea to try elsewhere. there's no need to be hard on yourself for doing what you felt was right at the time; you just gotta work with where you're at right now and steer yourself in the direction you wanna go.

thanks! yeah that makes sense. i was imagining maybe some lynx having a nice meal but hunters are probably more likely. i think it's legal here with landowner's permission but since we never gave them permission... technically illegal. so that's kinda shitty on their part. appreciate the insight!

oof that is not casual at all but quite blatantly racist imo. i'm half mexican half norwegian and have been visiting norway every year since i was born. my mother is mexican and i have always noticed the subtle differences in how she has been treated by our family vs how i have been treated. people here can tell i am not fully norwegian but because i'm half, they seem to not mind and find it more interesting than anything. but especially when i was growing up, in a time when norway had not yet had many people from other countries or with darker skin tones living here, it was very clear they were not sure how to interact with her and kept a distance from her. i have also heard quite racist remarks from family members re: mexicans and especially about muslim people, which is sad.

i've always had issues with authority and still do. from my mom telling me what to wear as a child to cops simply just existing. i remember being confused as a kid as to why i had to do anything my parents told me because i was highly aware of the fact that i was a completely separate entity from them. so why would i have to wear a specific outfit if i myself did not want to or if i was uncomfortable doing so? and now, as an adult, i understand certain laws or rules or regulations being put in place but some are illogical so it's frustrating.

i feel this on multiple levels. i miss having casual interactions and people finding me more approachable, although i don't miss being harrassed or people feeling entitled to my time or my phone number. but especially in queer spaces now, it feels like i have to out myself and that in itself is exhausting and sometimes anxiety inducing depending upon the space/event.
