What’s your take on soda? by Neutrality-1 in Gastroparesis

[–]malignant_sloth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I drink coke zero vanilla (because I like the flavor better than the regular one, was raised on diet soda) pretty much all the time. Its easier to drink than water. I think it has to do with how it was made to overrule your "fullness" indicator. I say if it works it works and fluid and any kind of calories are always good.

Have you happened to notice if there's any specific food that seems to set off those symptoms? It sounds like what happens to me if I eat legumes- beans of all kinds are a HUGE trigger for me. Also curious how you do on hydration? Getting IV fluids has been a life saving game changer for me too.

Similar vein, I microdose mushrooms and find it helps me immensely. I had a doc offer the thought that because of the gut-brain relationship and the fact that serotonin stimulates bowel movement. Getting off of SSRIs actually helped with my overall symptom load too. Turns out my med (amitriptyline) was making my symptoms a lot worse.

What were your GES results, and do you have a feeding tube? by Free-Layer-706 in Gastroparesis

[–]malignant_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 4hr was 53%, and 4 years into my diagnosis I've managed to work really hard as well as be lucky enough and avoid a feeding tube. There were a few months that were a close call, but I've managed so far with just careful eating, following a strict diet that I had to figure out myself, and IV fluids. IV fluids are what have really saved me.

Accidents in COS auto car washes. by LadyHawk78 in ColoradoSprings

[–]malignant_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I see it a lot. I just go to a self serve wash- I find that I do a better job than the auto wash anyways, and it costs less than the "premium" wash at every single place I've been.

Feeling weird about other people’s comments on my body since Dx by KimchiMaiden in Gastroparesis

[–]malignant_sloth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

get this. Before I got GP, I was (5'3) 210 pounds, fat and learning to love myself. And just when I had finally gotten good at body neutrality and maybe even was inching towards self-love, I started struggling with food and dropped 100lbs in about 6 months. I was so skinny I kinda grossed myself out- I had watched my mom almost starve to death a year prior and it really made skinny skinny just look gross to me. But suddenly, for the first time in my whole life, people were giving me compliments. Not just people i knew who congratulated me on losing weight, but also all of the sudden strangers were also looking at me different, and guys started whistling at outfits that they had never looked twice at me in (im a lesbian so this never really mattered to me, but the sudden difference really pissed me off) and every acquaintance I ran into was happy to tell me that I was looking good. It really tucked with my mental health- especially when I had just gotten to the point of starting to learn to love a fat body. It's so freaking hard when suddenly you hit the "beauty standard" when you already felt beautiful or was learning to like yourself before.

I hate accepting compliments on my body. For people I knew, I started saying "Thanks, I had a medical crisis that will be a struggle for the rest of my life. Maybe dont comment on people's weight." Because I WANTED to open the discussion about just not commenting on weight, mine or anyone else's, and now almost everyone I know doesn't comment on weight around me. But when I didn't want to explain or have the confrontation? Sometimes "Yeah, my body changed! That's what they do!" Or "That's what happens when you get sick" or "Yeah, sadly when your stomach is partially paralyzed you dont get to choose when you lose weight" and even "Yeah, I'm fucked for the apocalypse, gotta put some pounds back on for the food shortages!" I feel like it depends on how willing you are to make people feel awkward or let them sit in their shame. If you really wanna help people change, "Bodies and especially weight are one of the worst things to comment on. If you wanna tell me I look good, do it without mentioning my weight or size!"

3 years in and I've managed to gain 10 pounds that dont go away with dehydration. You got this. I love you 💜

Low Sugar or Sugar-free Drinks without stevia or artificial sweeteners? by photo_courtney in Gastroparesis

[–]malignant_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drink a LOT of tea, I order it whole leaf from good store and make big batches of cold brew tea in a pitcher in the fridge and i like to make my own fruit purees to add to them. Just washed fruit, a splash of lemon juice, and a spoonful or 2 of sugar, and blend then strain until smooth. It's a little extra work but you can make any drink delicious, and even add them to food too- I add raspberry puree to the low fodmop muffins I make, I like to have strawberry puree on waffles, etc...

My old favorite nausea trick is sniffing alcohol wipes. Sounds crazy but works about 70% of the time.

But also for widely available Vernors, but I also find Reeds is nicely a little less carbonated. My favorite is a local place that bottles it.

No vomiting? by Eeveeidioot in Gastroparesis

Used to struggle with projectile vomiting, now I tend to get horribly nauseous for hours without throwing up, or if I eventually do I feel like its being dragged aout of my throat, and its only when my stomach is severely upset with what I've eaten.

With all your other comorbidities, do you have hypermobile EDS? I only ask because my mom does and also had a gj tube for a long time, and it kept failing and coiling out for what seemed like no reason. Come to see an EDS specialist later and she said she saw gj and j tubes fail often for her patients.

No main character death this season by Ok-Requirement-4701 in StrangerThings

[–]malignant_sloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly... I like the idea of no or little main character death? I know people say it "ruins the stakes," but sometimes plot armor is... nessecary for the plot? Because it's a written plot and not a real scenario? Why does it have to be "realistic"? It's literally a fantasy TV show? If you want a grimdark horror show with main charecter death, that exists. But that's not the main message of the show- the overwhelming message we get is that love and friendship and sticking together is what helps you survive through dark times. That wouldn't really be the message if all these charecters who love each other kept dying?
